Monthly Writing Contest / What to do about the writing contest?
« on: February 03, 2020, 12:36:39 PM »
So Bea and I are a bit unsure how to proceed. The last months have been a struggle, participationwise. We had sometimes less than four stories (which is the unofficial minimum) and have kept themes open for two months to get at or above four stories.

Now Tardiness was open for two months (in the cold season no less, where people tend to be inside more and thus write more) and we still have only three stories.

Frankly, it's not motivating to make a new contest every month if the demand is not there. Sure, there are always up's and down's and slow spells from time to time but this feels like a long one.

But maybe we do something wrong? Who knows?

It'd be great if only former or actual participants or users who want to take part in the contest vote in the poll. The opinion of readers, while greatly valued, may skew the results and it's the writers whose opinion we need.

Tardiness

Clock by etwoo

Being (too) late can be something absolutely awful or something extremely lucky, depending on the circumstances. This time we want stories where something isn't happening (to somebody) as it should because somebody was late for something because of reasons. Happy, sad, science fiction, fantasy, ... write what your story needs and your mind wants.

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. The main character(s) must be too late for something.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys under the B.
Bonus rule: We consider voting in a contest you're taking part in a given. Others take time and effort to read the stories - you should do the same. A small community like ours lives from reciprocity and this contest needs stories as much as votes.

If you want so submit your story anonymously you can do so by sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close December 31st/January 1st, 2019 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here. Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here.

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Arch Enemies

Bush Warriors by LockedBox

Only a few weeks until Christmas, the celebration of love and family, is upon us. So this is a good time to write about two people who absolutely hate each other. We're not talking rivals, we want arch enemies. She's his nemesis and he is hers. No sacrifice is too great to bring him/her down and it doesn't matter if the whole world burns.

This month we want you to write about an irresolvable conflict. You decide the scale. Could be generals with their armies, could be Suzie from next door (who is of course a witch in training because this is a fantasy forum ;)).

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. The main characters have to be arch enemies.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.

Please only vote if you plan to participate in the contest. Otherwise we may get a result nobody who participates is happy with.

The poll runs for two days and if the decision for a new topic is made, I'll post it on the 2nd or 3rd of October.

A day in Hogwarts by Noshiba-Photographe

It's the start of the school year in most places and Bea rightfully noticed that we didn't have a related theme yet!
(Apprentices is the closest one I think.)

The most famous school in fantasy is of course Hogwarts. Pratchett's Unseen University, Brakebills University from Lev Grossman's Magicians or Rothfuss' Arcanist University from the Kingkiller Chronicles are other prominent examples. Others aren't so formal or traditional, sometimes there are only traveling teachers who teach history for an egg (Pratchett's Tiffany Achings series) or it's walled off in a convent (Lawrence's Book of the Anchestor series).

To make it short: There are many different schools in Science Fiction (Storm Trooper University is probably named something different but surely exists) and Fantasy and we want you to add another one. The age, race, topics of education or number of students don't matter.

Give us a school/university setting and let something interesting happen!

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. The setting has to be a school.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.

Break the Rules: Weather

Rainmeter theme by adni18

Break the Rules is a new series of themes we'll do every now and then were you are supposed to do something you normally shouldn't do when writing a story. We hope this provides a new perspective and fun. In our first edition of BtR you have to start your story with a description of the weather. We want to encourage you to just start describing the weather and look where that takes you storywise.

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. You have to start your story with at least a hundred words describing the weather. If you write a poem, the first eight lines need to be about the weather.
Work for it. ;)

Employment

Apprentice Collar by boscopenciller

This month we have a solid, honest theme. Employment. This isn't about heroes doing hero stuff. This is about people doing what they have to do, or probably even love doing, to get by. This is about the people ignored, used or exploited by the MCs of their world. Those who have to clean up after the tavern brawl or desperately try to salvage the harvest after a passing mage killed a dragon with a hail storm. They're insignificant in the grand scheme of things but not to their families and neighbors. They exist and they deserve a story of their own.

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. Employment has to play an important role in your story.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.

Two themes that don't fit together

Ludu's game by AlbaJaen

I haven't read Codex Alera by Jim Butcher yet but somebody once described it as ancient Rome meets Pokémon. That was the birth of this writing prompt.
This month we want you to combine two themes in your story that - at first sight - don't fit together (but may result in a great, surprisingly good fitting story in the end). Another example would be Evangelicals and Donald Trump, but that's sadly not fantasy.

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. You need to combine two themes that, at first sight, don't fit together.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
