Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Re: Brandon Sanderson and Sex...?
« on: April 12, 2011, 11:14:10 AM »
Cool discussion by the way! I haven't read Sanderson's work, so I cannot really say on that account but sex in fantasy is an interesting one as a broader subject. IMO, I get the impression sometimes sex is just 'thrown' in (I know that's not always the case) - there a few times I think it's weakened the story (and character) rather than actually being significant (something that occurs on TV shows a lot these days as well).

Also, there's a lot more to sex or sexual-ness than the actual act itself, so I think a clever writer is one that really uses that in the plot.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Re: Female Fantasy Authors
« on: February 15, 2011, 11:42:10 AM »
Wow interesting discussion as I am a female author writing epic fantasy.

Has anyone recommended J.V. Jones 'Sword of Shadows' Series yet?

'A Cavern of Black Ice' is supreme, the first book in the series. If you don't read the others, that's no huge loss (sacrilegious though it is to suggest that) because they are slow and I am still waiting for the series to really pick up - and we're four books in  :-[.

But 'A Cavern' is long and riveting and dark and just brilliant.

I also love dragons, they are awesome but also love phoenixes.

Jack Bauer would have done it... and within 24 hours! :D

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Re: Defining Fantasy
« on: February 07, 2011, 02:48:31 PM »
Wow, the definitions are really interesting. It never occurred to be to use words like 'possible' and 'impossible' - they almost seem kind of useless terms, in a way, IMO, simply because Fantasy operates outside of them. Does that make sense?  ???

Fantasy - for me - is anything that has a real supernatural element to it, an existence of an 'Otherworld'. Whatever happens in that world goes but it always attaches itself to *some* concept of reality as we know it.

But ultimately, it springs out of another level of imagination and I think mythology has a huge part to play in defining this genre.

Darn, its hard to define.
