BJacobsen, I have not read the book, but one book about song magic would be Songmaster by Orson Scott Card.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Re: Chinese fantasy novels

Indeed, Louis Cha (Yin yong) can be seen as a fantasy author, as in his Wuxia books, people do exactly the fantastic feats that make "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" so interesting.

My wife (from Taiwan) is a big fan of his books, and they seem to be immensely popular among Chinese readers, but unfortunately, very few of his books have been translated.

I guess the same applies to much other Chinese fantastic literature. Let's face it, there are 1 billion people speaking Mandarin, of which many are able to read, by translating a book to English, there is possibly not much additional readership to be gained, and the beauty of the Chinese texts if hard to convey in the translation.

A word on "Bridge of Birds" - indeed, while it has been written by the American Barry Hughart, the writing style is influenced by Asian literary forms and it definitely is NOT "American literature".

Best regards,
Andy
