Just 15% into Senlin Ascends and I'm already finding it hard to continue. It reads like a travelogue written by a naive Traveller explaining his naivety. The quick flashback don't help the flow either.

Does it the pace pick up and plot moves?

Sanderson's Starsight is out and I may switch before getting back to this again.

It does start a bit slow, but it gets better and better as it goes on.

Which reminds me...I still haven't read the other books.

I didn't actually finish any books in November. Between my depression and my work schedule, I just haven't felt like reading.

I've been working on a couple of books, though.

Sufficiently Advanced Magic by Andrew Rowe

Soulsmith by Will Wight

I've enjoyed both. I just haven't felt much like reading in general.

For me, it was Steven Erikson. I heard so many amazing things about Malazan. After forcing myself through five books, I have to conclude it's simply not for me.

By sheer number of books, I think Terry Brooks is still in the lead, but Brandon Sanderson is close behind. I've also read a lot of books by indie author D.K. Holmberg, though his books tend to be on the short side. Then there's Robert Jordan. Not as many books, but the word count of each book makes up for that fact.

It's not a big deal to me, especially if it's a relatively generic title. It might suggest a lack of imagination in coming up with a title, but as a writer, I can say that titles are one of the hardest things to come up with.

Recently, I finished the following books.

Storm Glass by Jeff Wheeler. This was an enjoyable book, though it was definitely geared toward a younger audience than I expected going in. Good enough that I am looking to read the rest of the series at some point.

Dragon Storm and Dragon Rider by D.K. Holmberg. Now I have only one book left in the series. It's been a lot of fun. It won't win any literary awards, but Holmberg always provides the kind of comfort reads I enjoy. My only real issue is that I think he could sometimes use one more proofread before publishing.

City of Light by Will Wight. I really enjoyed this entire trilogy. I think fans of Sanderson will find a lot to like in Wight's incredibly creative magic system and action-packed plots.

You've inspired me to give Red Sister a second try, too. Like you, I just came with the Prince of Thorns expectations, and those were some very thorny boots to fill.

@Saraband, you definitely need to do that, and then continue to the other books: Grey Sister moves out "into the world" and it's being amazing

I'm excited to hear that about Grey Sister. My biggest issue with Red Sister was that I would have liked to see less school and more world.

I need to finish the book I'm writing and then take a little time to write a short story for an anthology. I'm so excited that I was asked to be a part of an anthology with quite a few talented authors in it. Even better, I have an idea that really fits well with the theme of the anthology.

Still going strong. Now I'm 64,000 words into my newest book. It's probably going to be a bit shorter too, so I'm pretty close to the end (anticipating a word count around 80k for the book).

I prefer "kitchen sink" urban fantasy. Sure, there are werewolves and vampires, but you also have all kinds of other creatures. The Dresden Files come to mind.

Right now, I'm continuing my indie fantasy binge.

I'm currently reading:

Storm Glass by Jeff Wheeler. It feels very much like more of a children's story (with two 12-year-old main characters), but I'm enjoying it.

Trial of Stone by Andy Peloquin. Gives me some Brent Weeks vibes, and that's definitely a good thing.

The Silver Sorceress by Alec Hutson. This is the sequel to the excellent first book, The Crimson Queen.

City of Light by Will Wight. It's the final book in the Traveler's Gate trilogy, which is a lot of fun.
