Have we all made peace now with just getting a filmed ending not a book ending to this series?

Yep the show will be my canon now.  I doubt that I ever read any of the future books unless I hear (from people whose taste opinions match mine) they are absolutely amazing. I did not like the last two at all and the long delay is not giving me any reason to think this one will be different.

Once a week I always get an evening where I get really REALLY sleepy around 9.30, with eyes closing, and having to go to bed 'right then' and just fall asleep. Can barely brush my teeth, even.
It's either Tuesdays or Thursdays, super regular, I really don't get this - silly body!

I wish this would happen to me on occasion.  It always takes me awhile to fall asleep while for my wife the second her head hits the pillow she's out.

I know you said not urban but the Dresden books were always a good palette cleanser for me.  Maybe Gentlemen Bastards as well?

I'm about halfway through the Return of the Obra Dinn and its an absolutely awesome game.  The music, the story, the style, and just the feel of it is quickly making it one of my favorite games ever.  For those people who haven't heard it before you're an insurance adjuster in the early 1800s and a ship comes back from a voyage with no one left on it and you have to figure out what happened to all of the crew and passengers (hint: they die a lot).  On top of that the style is in line with a 80s Macintosh game (which you can change around to other retro game looks) which makes it look a lot differently than any modern game out right now.

Interestingly, @Hedin, I thought that book 4 recovered a lot and was the second best of the series, and finally the last was ok as a normal book but not as the end, wihich felt really rushed.

Book 4 might have been a good bounce back but after Books 2 and 3 I had no desire to go back unless it was a GOAT level book and even then I don't know if I would have.  I almost didn't even read 3 after 2 but at that point I was at 1 decent and 1 not so good book so I'll give one more to break the tie and it broke it for sure.  I can't even remember at this point everything about them that I didn't like but I do know one of my main sticking points was that Arlen turned into a completely different character and it just threw me off.

I would also advise against reading more if you didn't like the first book.  To me the first book was the best book of the series (I never bothered to read the 4th at all) and it went downhill after that so if you have problems with it already you will have problems with it going forward.

I don't really have any goals this year beyond maybe hopefully getting into the double digits.  Its a far cry from a few years ago when I was doing 50ish a year but I'm also not spending 10-12 hours a week in airplanes or airports which was when I did a lot of my reading.  I do think I might start trying more Audible stuff, I just worry that I will tune out and miss half the book.

:( my work computer never shows the pics you post, I'll have to wait until this evening to see...
I'm sure it will be lovely.

I woke up today to a light flurry covering everything, so pretty.

But then I realised I was complianing about a little bit when our american friends are being *really* cold! How are you faring, @JMack, @Hedin , who else is on the North East area?

But I really feel for folks in our Midwest, like Chicago, where temp with wind chill was -40 Fahrenheit and crazy stuff like.

Midwest here and it was cold.  Our high in Indianapolis on Wednesday was -1F and the wind chill was in the -35 to -40F range.  Yesterday was marginally better, we actually got up to 15F with only a -10F wind chill.  I have friends in Chicago who said they were having -60F wind chills.  Luckily for me on Wednesday my youngest daughter was sick so I just stayed home all day and didn't have to go outside at all.  Also woke up to snow this morning which made the commute fun.

Monday is supposed to get up to 60 degrees.  Living in the midwest is confusing.

Also started playing in an online D&D game (I got really into D&D last year) which has been fun.

How? Where? How?  Where?

Do you use roll20?  Are they people you knew already or met online?  I NEED TO KNOW.

Yep using Roll20 with video chat on Discord, the Roll20 video chat always gave us issues when we tried.  I found a group in r/LFG, it actually took me awhile to find something because I couldn't play until 9pm EST and most games started earlier than that (I found a few hosted by a West Coast GM that started at 6pm PST which would have matched up nicely but they were all planning for 4 hour sessions which would be way too late for me). We have 5 in our party, two of the guys I play off of well but not a fan of the play style of the other two but still having fun with it.  I want to get into an in person live game but beyond a game store locally that does things once a month I haven't had any success finding something around me.

Yay! Did you manage to not be blocked, then? I did all I could with the IP bans thing, but nothing really happened...
How have you been?

No issues yet but usually seemed to work the first time I logged in at work (at home right now) and then got screwy so we will see what happens tomorrow.

Things have been hectic here but good. Had some bad times the past six months with some family deaths but we have hopefully put all of that behind us for awhile. I made the idiotic decision recently to wake up at 5am to workout before work which means that I am going to bed earlier which means almost no time for hobbies. Been in a bit of a video game kick with my limited free time but haven't been reading much, at this point I have kinda lost track of what has come out in the last 18 months or so. Also started playing in an online D&D game (I got really into D&D last year) which has been fun.

The girls are doing great. The oldest just lost her second tooth which made the Tooth Fairy make an emergency run to the grocery store to get cash back from buying gum since they don't carry cash anymore. The youngest is trying to prove that since she is two she doesn't need to listen to us anymore but her hysterics are so funny and cute it's really hard to keep the Dad face on with her.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Re: Abebooks top 50 Fantasy Book List
« on: September 05, 2018, 03:09:45 AM »
12 for me. I did notice a trend that the list tended to go with more older books than more "modern" ones and most of the older ones I haven't touched. But also Eragon? Really?

I’m sure F-F will do a list.

Could have made it a book battle...

Edit: Actually I am thinking of an idea how to do this but not as a book battle. I still have the records of all of the nominations we did for both series and standalones. Might need to get some updated recs because it's been a few years but I think I have enough info to make a ballot of sorts.

Books by far. I actually can't think of any movie that I thought was better than any book it was based off of.

Also, the movies end at Deathly Hallows Part 2, there are no prequels movies or sequel plays in my personal HP canon.

I never look at maps, if they wanted to save a few pieces of paper and time and omitted them I would not complain.
