We're still great ;D

Oh, I have no doubt! I just have to re-acclimate myself to the surroundings.

Fantasy Resources / I need more Pantheons ....
« on: July 06, 2018, 05:02:04 PM »
I have been on a tear reading through the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. I had known about them for quite awhile...but judged the books by their cover (is that Fabio on the covers?!?!) and dismissed them. Then a few weeks back, a co-worker convinced me to try Hounded....an boy did I LOVE it!!

One of the things that I love most about it (besides Oberon's "inner monologues") are the reliance on the Norse and Celtic pantheons/mythologies. I just finished The Viking Spirit: An Introduction to Norse Mythology and Religion, and I am currently reading Celtic Mythology: Tales of Gods, Goddesses, and Heroes. I have The Mammoth Book of Celtic Myths and Legends on tap afterwards, as well.

Are there any other good resources for expanding my knowledge of the Norse, and especially Celtic pantheons out there? Also, any other fiction series with a focus on either of these pantheons would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

@michaelramm , I see you ! I remember your posts when I first joined.

Yes, I am getting back into the Fantasy Reading game. This was my first stop as I remember it as being the best community from "back in the day!" (First post was in Jan 2011!!). I cannot wait to get caught up and back to being an active member again.

I can speak for most US residents in that we havent received our copies yet. So will refrain from this thread from now on.

Actually, I received mine quite a while ago...like two months or more ago...I just have not had a chance to read mine yet.

I had a kindle keyboard for about 3 years with the case with the light built in. My wife upgraded me to a paperwhite for Christmas and I absolutely love it. I gave my KK to my 12YO and he reads on it now. I love have 18-20 books with me at all times because I never know what kind of reading mood I am going to be in at any given moment.

Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson with my department at work.

Rise of Empire by Michael J. Sullivan

and a bunch of Batman trades!

I am going to stop Gardens of the Moon. Not because I don't like, I really do. But it takes more of my attention than I can give it while reading Prince of Thorns, Theft of Swords and Assassin's Apprentice.

I kind of figured 4 books at a time would be tough, but Gardens is such a DEEP read that I am going to postpone it to a later time this year when I can fully dedicate more of my attention to it.

I am still really liking Gardens. I am still wholly confused to the big picture, but since it is the first quarter of the first book of 10, I am sure it will be made clear. I like the writing and the humor, as well. I love when an author can inject subtle humor into fantasy. Erickson does it well, Sullivan does it well too.

I cannot wait to see what is store in Book Two.

I am two chapters in and a bit confused. I like what i have read so far, but there are a lot of characters thrown at you in the beginning and I am a tad confused.

I know that there is a BIG war going on and that there MAY have been a huge sell out from the top Mage in the land. That is about all that I know.

But I am enjoying it so far.

oh woe is me!

I let my 11YO start playing Skyrim....and now I am back in it again. I have started a Nord Berserker and I am having a lot of fun with him. I have revisited my lvl 20 Kahjiit Assassin a couple of times, but I have really forgotten how to play him good, so I will stick with my Berserker for the time being.

i finally finished Way of Kings (started in March). I really enjoyed it a lot. I liked Mistborn a lot better. I thought that it was about 300 pages too long.

So now, I am going to read the Unfettered Anthology to end the year.

Never read any of the Malazan book, so I think that I will also join in. I have always heard good things about this series and I think that I would like it a lot.

i have sort of planned out my 2014 as the year I want to finish out the series that I have started in the past. So I have setup a bookshelf on Goodreads called '2014-series-to-read' and added the books to series that i have started...Mistborn, Riyria, Black Magician, Gentleman Bastards and others.

If I have a theme or goal that I want to accomplish, then I will setup a shelf on GR and plan it out. I am sure that I will have some drop in that I will read during the year.

Not for nothing, but Amazon is listing the release dates for SWORN IN STEEL for May 6 (U.S.) and May 8 (U.K.) in 2014. I think these are on the mark, people.

Okay, back to copyediting & lurking. :)

WOOHOO!! I will definitely add SiS to read in May. I am trying to hit series that I have started by not finished for 2014, but I will definitely put AT and SiS in rotation to read when it is released.

Thanks for the confirmation on the dates! Cannot wait!!
