New layout/organization of the Book Club Section OK, I set this up last week and have decided I think I like it. Just a heads up for those of you that visit the area frequently or infrequently, here's a run down of my idea with the changes:

The Science Fiction book club is no longer an on going thing, so I wanted to remove that section to prevent confusion. With trying to move it into this area, the board was getting a bit busy with all of the book clubs that are no longer active, it required scrolling to get to current topics (like nominations/voting).

So … here it is. I have decided to keep about 3 months worth directly on this section. It will be the current and upcoming book clubs. I will also have a board directly off of this board with all of the book club reads from this year (after they are moved off of this main page). This will give all of the book clubs from the current year listed on this screen. After the year is done, the entire board for the year will be moved to the Book Club Archives.

Because I worry this will make it harder to see all of the books we have already done, I have created a spread sheet to keep track. There's not a good spreadsheet within the forum, so I am doing it in Google Docs, and just providing the link: Fantasy Faction Book Club Index The first tab lists all of the books, and then there are tabs for each genre.

My explanation probably sounds more confusing/complicated than it is. Or maybe it was obvious and needed no explanation. But just incase, there it is. I think moving forward, this should be a good layout and will keep the current book clubs from getting cluttered.

Let me know if you have any feedback, if it's good/bad/whatever. :)

Re: Baudin SPOILER enter after you finished chapter 11 Love the idea of the Talons. Opens up a whole new set of possibilities .... ;D 8)

Felisin is starting to do my head in. I'd have have killed her by now I reckon. If there was a prize for most petulant and annoying and deliberately obtuse character ever she would win hands down. Not that she'd give a toss, of course!  :P

Looks like Tavore is the smartest of the three siblings so far. Hope she lasts long enough for us to get to know her a bit better.

Re: Scene & Chapter Length Contrary to what some have said here, I do think chapter length matters. I'm less sure about scene length, so I'll ignore that one.

If chapters 1, 2, 3 and on up to 10 are all about the same length, then I'm expecting 11 to follow suit. It can, of course, be dramatically shorter or longer, but that's the expectation. Sometimes using a shorter chapter can be done deliberately for effect, and I'm fine with that.

But if chapter 1 is a thousand words and chapter 2 is five thousand and chapter 3 is two thousand and chapter 4 is eleven thousand and chapter 5 is eight hundred, and so on, then the book becomes jerky. I'll almost guarantee the pacing within chapters will likewise not be smooth.

So, chapter length *does* matter. It's not something the author can get away with not caring about. (hey, two phrases ending in prepositions in the same sentence; achievement!)

Re: Experiences with worldbuilding Here is a quick tip from me: When you write down a note for an idea you have, also write down what inspired that idea.

I just found a two months old note that just says "underground lizard men". I know what that means. But I really can't remember why I would ever have thought that would be something I would want to add to my world.

Re: "Similar to X" / "On a par with Y" - on book covers
I thought this was a discussion of genetics.  ;D
I stand corrected.
But it is. Obviously a book with good genes gets put on other books blurbs. If it has through this shown to other books its superiority they are more likely to mate with it and... Oh wait. ;D

Love letter to Jen Williams Dear @sennydreadful:

OK, this won't really be a love letter. But it's a good hook.  ;D

I am barely into The Copper Promise but I'm already in love with the book. It's got a wonderful blend of characters, fantasy tropes and cool story. But mostly it's the prose I'm enjoying for how incredibly readable but delightfully skilled it is. I feel as though in addition to the story - the center of the experience, of course - I'm getting a master class in writing.

Here's an example: In the dialogue between Sebastian, Wydrin and Frith, you often tell us who's speaking by switching the action to the speaker, then following with the speaker's dialog. No need for "said Sebastian."

And, you give us believable thinking and timing. Frith asks if Wydrin is trustworthy. I might have just had him answer right off.  Instead, "Sebastian looked up at the sky..." We immediately understand his thoughtful nature, and we believe it when he comes back with a wry story that supports his partner while not being entirely complimentary.  (Now I'm not pretending there aren't other wonderful writers or that any of this is new, I'm just saying it's really well done here. I just finished Dreamer's Pool and for all it's good qualities, the writing often felt slow and stiff.)

And, it's all so much fun. This reminds me of Goldman's writing in the Princess Bride, though obviously a different tone. And PBis one of my favorite books.

So, now it's down into the Citadel, wondering how exactly they'll face the terror that seems to have done away with our poor Gallo.

Re: Love letter to Jen Williams - spoiler free Copper Promise Page 214.
I know when I'm into a book when I have to cover the right hand page with my hand while reading the left.  ;D
