Re: Explain your magic systems Well, first, I think it IS original.

Where I and many other writers part ways is I put story first - and I am fairly good at doing that. I can separate character from role, story from plot, etc.

So decide what does your magic system NEED to do/be/convey?  In LOTR the magic system is all but non-existent. In other work's it's more involved. Back into your magic from the story's perspective...

In my novel, my wizard is a flop, at first. He get's harassed by his more powerful brothers. He's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and no one lets him play. And then he discovers he's different - he's not Rudolph, he's the ugly duckling. And it turns out, Swans are WAY more powerful than ducks.

So my system needed to have two "tracks", call em PCs and Macs. It had to make sense in my mind for him to both demonstrate some magical potential, but be unable to do anything but fizzle things. That was actually kind of hard. The point is, I built the magic to support my ugly duckling tale.

I also delved into ancient philosophy, studied magic (its history and various expressions), and selected a specific central metaphor to provide me the language to describe it: I generate analogies and metaphors continuously anyway, so best to put them to work.

Another example: in D&D and WOW, and this genre, everyone talks about balance, right? Critical in crafting a good game - terrible way to craft a world you intend to write about. I wanted an imbalanced world that my hero would bring balance to. (sensing any star wars parallels yet?). But HOW? I did not want some BS story hinging on a prophecy.

My magic had to allow for this in a plausible way. I went with the CONCEPT of a ground in electrical systems. Take a battery (sorcerer) hook it to a ground and you get HEAT as the energy is drawn out of the battery into the earth. Oh, and a dead battery (sorcery). What was deadly to you before (sorcery), is now something that cannot effect you because you're grounded. Yay balance!

I decided my character would devise this analogy to a ground as a counter to sorcery - using concepts stolen from sciences related to gems, crystals, physics, etc., and of course, that counter will be opposed. The idea being it's not just the gem, and it's not just the sorcerer, it's the CUT of a particular kind of gem that allows the transfer of sorcerous energy from the sorcerer back to its source. Only a sorcerer could make those precise cuts but sorcerers never study crystalline structures ... until... one day ... my sorcerer does...
