Re: A Writer's Stash - Share Your Resources oh!  oh!

it's absolutely impossible that this hasn't been mentioned somewhere else on the site, but as a noob running all over the internet looking for solid writing advice, i found "writing excuses" with brandon sanderson, mary robinette kowal, howard tayler, and dan wells -- it's awesome.

like i said, it's called "writing excuses" and it's a weekly podcast about the art and craft of writing.  (they appear to focus on fantasy)  it's amazing.  they cover subjects like "How Do I Write a Story, Not an Encyclopedia?" and "What Do You Mean My Main Character is Boring?"  it's chock-full of tactical advice and examples -- not just hand-waving, theoretical musings.

they've been at it since '06, i believe, so there are about a bazillion back episodes -- all perfectly relevant.  and it looks like nobody's mentioned them in the forums for a couple years, so i'm bringing them up.

edit:  *sigh*

of course, i post this and go click a bit.  writing excuses is LITERALLY the first link in this first sticky of this board.  in my defense, on a search, that post showed up for 2011.

so.  um.  bump!

Re: Ta'veren (Again) at 3,000
@m3mnoch: Well, I can't find that post where you were talking about telling your wife about this place, but this was what went through my mind:

Spoiler for Hiden:
[scene opens with m. at monitor at 3 o'clock in the morning.]

wifey: hey, what're ya doing?
m: Oh nothing. [continues clicking away]
wifey: [peers over shoulder] oh, another forum i take it?
m: [nods] yeah. they're cool. see, goats!
wifey: [looks closer] oh my, is that--
m: yeah, they like cake too. and they laugh at my jokes.
wifey: you tell 'em about the--
m: olive garden one? yeah, they enjoyed that.
wifey: figures.

whoa!  that's creepy.  were you in my office last night?  you must have left early, tho, because you missed the rest of the conversation!

Spoiler for Hiden:
[scene continues with wifey hovering over m's shoulder]

m:  see?  they're cool!  they like fantasy books.  and cake!
wifey:  hmmm...  but do they like my fantasy book cakes?
m:  duh!  of course they do!
wifey:  oh.  so they aren't imaginary?
m:  of course not.
wifey:  okay.  you can be friends with them.
m:  yay!

Re: Fantasy-Faction Con 2016
@wakarimasen, I wonder if you appear in my photos ?? or have you already told me and I didn't pay attention at the time? :-[
I was re-reading that thread and I've realised @Rukaio_Alter was there too, and he also didn't come talk with me. Could it really have been that in these last 4 months we got much closer together? You wouldn't dream of not coming talk to me now, right? I'm not scary... ;D

there were photos?!?!

someone wouldn't talk to bea?!?!

my world!  it's vacillating SO HARD right now!

Re: The King's Paws
Nah, like I said before I can't really draw animals. The only real exception is (or rather was) birds. It's been so long since I've drawn anything though, I'd be woefully out of practice.  :-\

oooh!  i should just send you the photoshop file!

That goaglf (or woagat? can't decide) only has two legs. And definitely not enough wolf. It should at least have a wolf-like body!  :P

i'm also happy to add the other legs, the other wing, and the other horn.

hrm.  also, maybe i'll make some adjustments so it's half goat, half dragon, and half wolf.

p.s. ha!  see what i did there?

Re: Depression is a bitch... from a friend
I think people at work are getting back to the old 'normal' high-demanding position, and I'm having a hard time trying to comply :-\

In the beginning everyone was very understanding... but I'm afraid 4 months is a long time in the business world, and because I look much better on the outside, they think I'm now ok.
And I don't feel anything close to ok - better, yes, but not ok. My brain is still broken inside.

I've been trying hard to do everything, but that means I might be going back in my recovery, feel slightly more fragile again. I need to make a stand again, talk to people. And that is upsetting, because I feel I'll be complaining again.

Wow, that's really a tough situation. Looking at it from their POV, you can understand where they are in this. But it doesn't really help you. You have to worry about your health, and that's not always their first concern.

Is there any resource available through work (an external counselor, coach, etc.) to help you work through how to approach? No need to reply here, but just putting it out there.

and, this may sound harsh coming from super-excited, always-happy me, but fuck what they think -- they don't matter.  you can even tell them i said so.

none of us care what they think, we only care about how you feel.  you rock, so please take care of yourself first and foremost.

Re: Do you review?
Everything I am reading here, on facebook and reddit suggests that Goodreads is one folks visit, rate and review on the most.

yup.  feels like it's tied to incentive and reputation.

for goodreads, there's not really an incentive to give reviews of any kind.  any reviews are there purely because people wanted to give their opinion.  amazon, however, incentivizes comments and reviews so it feels like they are less trustworthy.  they're more junk.  so you end up not trusting the reviews on an amazon page.

at least, for me, i trust goodreads reviews waaaay more than amazon reviews.
