Re: May 2016 Author Earnings Report
There are flaws and gaps in the Author Earnings Report and they are by no means an unbiased study group.  They have a worldview and they do seek to promote it.  There is lots of information they don't get access to or don't seem to even try to. Their conclusions and data don't match many other established groups when it comes to author income.  The Author's Guild in the UK and US disagree, Forbes, Codex and other significant industry tracking groups come to different conclusions and different numbers.

Could you unpack that please. How are their figures different and how does that play into their worldview?

Re: Is There Room For Yet Another Tolkien Clone?
But don't let that discourage you. If people continue to use elves/dwarves, it's because there are people who simply love them and can't have enough of them. There's audience for everything.

That would be me!  Can't read enough high fantasy.  But having magic is more important than elves or dwarves.

So:
I wish I had the time to ponder for paragraphs about whether the common-or-garden elves-dwarves-and-whatever in the cultural fantasy consciousness at present have more to do with Tolkien or D&D (by, admittedly, way of Tolkien, but with a lot of alteration).

It's probably best for everyone that I don't. ;p

Please do!!!  I'd say Tolkien and D&D hit me at the same time, but elves, they go way back before them  Tolkien and D&D may have put elves into an anthropomorphized political construct, but the fair folk, the aelfar of Old Norse and German mythology etc etc.  There's a rich and diverse mythology there to explore.

In that sense, it's a little absurd to decide that anything with an elf or a dwarf in it is a Tolkien rip off.  Everyone writing in High Fantasy (or fantasy at all) owes a huge, huge, HUUUUUUUGE debt to Tolkien, but elves and dwarves have been in song, myth and story long before and long after him.

I, btw write Tolkien/D&D rip offs as well :)  I hope you're having as much fun as I am!

Re: Avoiding writing, or: How many words didn't you write today?
Well, that or learn to love doing the dishes :p
NEVER!  >:(

I happen to love doing dishes!  Something about the warm water on my hands (and the fact that doing dishes means I actually have time to do dishes which means I've got a moment of pause...) just really calms me.

For me, I need an emotional trigger to write. I need to go out into the world and witness something harrowing or heartbreaking or funny.  Surprisingly it doesn't take long to find those things in LA, like a few secs of peoplewatching, a convo with a homeless woman, listening to people talk on the train.  Or watch a documentary or re-watch my favorite scenes from Stranger Things when Winona Ryder is trying to talk to her son.

Re: Got a blog? Share it! What's your blog?
Errr... I've got 2, working on 3...  The one that relates closest to this site is Nerd Empire, basically a site for me to nerd out online.  I have an older one called Politics and Chicken.

What sort of stuff do you write about?

So Nerd Empire is a work in progress (like my only book, which I've been editing for 5 years....).  I have some author-related stuff up right now (even though I'm not much of an author w/o a book...), but I don't really envision it as an author site.

Eventually I want it to be a nerd-interest monthly magazine.  Maybe I'll interview concept artists, do some social commentary on hacking in the media vs. real life.  Etc.  I just can't get it to look the way I want to, so I haven't launched yet.  Not for lack of trying. #veryveryveryfrustrating  I want it to look very article-like, magazine-like. I CAN'T GET THINGS TO FIT ON THE PAGE RIGHT AND IT'S DRIVING ME MAD!!!

Politics and Chicken has more of my blog posts on them, they're more like hyperlinked politico-social commentary with titles like "Muerta-palooza and white people" and "Missionaries, militaries and murderers" where I do things like compare Sara Palin and Mark Twain's folksy-ness in a chart. It takes a lot of work to write these, so I haven't been good about keeping up with it.

What's the URL

http://www.nerdempire.org/

https://politicsandchicken.wordpress.com/

Why'd you start blogging?

Mostly to express myself with politics and chicken.  I process the f*ed up way I see the world in prose and post it.  I probably have 6 followers :)

What I'd like to do w/ Nerd Empire is a little different.  I want to pull together a community of nerds to celebrate nerdness a sort of Take Back the Night and Now Take Over The World for nerdy kids that get bullied in school and became/will become adults that love nerdy stuff.  I'd like to get contributors and stuff so it's not just me writing on it.  Maybe something like this:

Yeah, that thought doesn't apply everywhere.
Well, on the plus side, comments that a ton of people disagree with are great for encouraging discussion...

Re: [Aug 2016] - Potions and Elixirs - Submission Thread Am I allowed to leave this untitled?

It's a poem, 116 words

Spoiler for Hiden:
Eye of newt
 and a serpent’s tail
When the storm calls
 the gods you’ll hail

The first spring’s dew
 and a mushroom’s rot
Clear your mind
 and burn your thoughts

A rose still green
 and a moss blood red
On the thirteenth day
beg the blessings of the dead

A newborn’s tears
 stolen each night
to draw the glyph
 and seal the rite

To prove your desire
 to the gods above
the bloody heart
 of the one you love

A single taste
 and your fate is sealed
the darkness inside
 all wounds shall heal
free from the pain
 that mortals feel

Eye of newt
 and a serpent’s tail
When the storm calls
 the gods you’ll hail.
