Re: Brandon Sanderson
Apparently he's got a 36 book series planned  :o. The 6 that he's written that aren't Wot novels are part of it. The man is a writing machine.

The man is actually an AI.  (we have discussed before haven't we?  I remember someone posting that George RR Martin had been locked in a basement with a bowl of chicken wings while Sanderson finished ADWD for him.)

Re: Do unpronounceable names put you off a fantasy yarn?
conlang = Constructed Language. In other words, made up, like Klingon or Quenya.

Sorry for the jargon - I've been conlanging for decades :)

thanks

only just discovered blog is short for web log.

Re: Writers that shit on their characters.
Fitz may have felt the weight of some of Hobb's shit.

Yes!  I think Hobb was taking extra strong laxatives when writing Assassin's Quest.

Re: Things that annoy you in fantasy novels
Harry Potter is an excellent example of that rather interesting sexism which pervades our culture - the "mother's love". I could never figure out how Lilly Potter's self-sacrifice was important enough to protect Harry, where James's sacrifice for both child and wife didn't seem to make a blind bit of difference.

Very true.  Also troubling: the MANY other children also killed by Voldemort had mothers who presumably didn't love them enough?  Ouch.

It's all rather conservative as well.  Hermoine and Ron are both 18, in a tent together for several weeks and they never get a bit frisky?  And everyone ends up marrying their childhood sweetheart?

Re: Things that annoy you in fantasy novels Could you imagine it?  Harry and Ron buying a pack of Bertie Bots magical condoms from George and Fred?  Every imaginable flavour!  Every imaginable size!  Every imaginable type!  Except Fred and Ron as a cruel prank sell Ron a pack that reek of onions and play Barry White loudly.

Re: Have you come across your Home Town in Fantasy Yes. Any fantasy tale which begins in a rustic village with a tavern and a Spring time festival is pretty much my home town.
