Re: How much did you write today? 573 today though it took a whole day of procrastination before I could open that vein over the keyboard.

Re: How much did you write today? Just 253 for myself today, but I don't mind. I've written everyday this week, and it's a long time since I've been able to say that. Hopefully get some editing done of the weekend and be able to carry the momentum through to next week.

Re: Does There Need To Be A Hook?

So when that man spent two pages trying to scientifically and seriously prove to the reader than animals are happier in a zoo than in nature, and that no animal would actually seek being in the wild over a nice zoo, I got angry and simply decided that was me.
It felt way too much like preaching, still had too little to do with any active form of plot... Game over.

You're right in one respect it's nothing to do with plot, but it was everything to do with the book's theme given by a semi-kinda-sorta unreliable narrator.

Back to the OP: Confidence and seduction are what I'm always looking for in my reading.  A confident opening, one that doesn't necessarily have to start with a bang or wave an obvious hook in your face, but at the same time one that says the writer knows what he's doing, your in safe hands, this is the good stuff. Then I want to be seduced away from the real world and into the fictive dream, to forget the everyday, to be drawn into a different world so strongly that the awareness that your reading is gone, and you're just there in the story. Hooked.

Re: What are you currently reading?
Just started Mark Lawrence's Fool's Key.
You might be combining Hobb and Lawrence ;)
(it's Liar's key, hehe)

I really enjoyed Book 1 in the series Mark Lawrence's Prince of Assassins.  ;D

Re: The Joy of Edits
Having never completed anything longer than 1,750 words, I find a huge temptation to keep re-starting the first part of my WIP to fix things people point out. Just moving on to the rest without fixing that is giving me the heeby-jeebies.

I'd be wary about taking feedback on a project I was actively working on. I wouldn't really want to be second guessing and doubting myself whilst on the first draft. I want to be as free and uninhibited as possible writing the first draft. That said, I might have to do that so I have something to feed the crit group every fortnight.  :o

Back to the OP . . .

I had a similar sort of discovery when I realised I really like rewriting and that's where my story starts taking shape and I start having fun. I like dreaming up a story, sometimes planning one can be fun too, but I find getting that first draft down to be a major chore.

Although it can be daunting knowing that the actual hard work is only just beginning and the finished story is still a long, long way from being anywhere near to finished, once I start rewriting whole sections, crossing out whole lines and paragraphs, seeing where a plot element or character arc needs to be tweaked, where the premise can be strengthened the theme heightened, that's where it starts to be fun for me.

Re: I'm thinking of getting cats You should check out different breeds. Some, like the Ragdoll and Russian Blue, are more suited to apartment life than the average moggy.
