Post by: CameronJohnston on September 07, 2016, 05:09:13 PM
Hey folks,

The 2017 James White Award for non-professional writers is open for entries between now and January 20th - see
http://www.jameswhiteaward.com/ for more details.

It's totally free and you have 5 months to write, edit and polish a short story. No reason not to give this a shot!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The James White Award is an annual short story competition open to non-professional writers with the winner chosen by a panel of judges made up of professional authors and editors. Stories entered into the competition must be original and previously unpublished. Entry is free.

The closing date for this year’s competition is Friday, 20 January 2017. The winner will be announced during Innominate, Eastercon 2017 – 14-17 April in the Hilton Metropole, Birmingham.

Please note:

The James White Award only accepts entries via the online form on this website.
Stories must be between 1000 and 6000 words long.
Stories are judged anonymously. We do not offer critiques or feedback on stories.

I have my story all ready to go for this. Anybody else going to give this one a shot?

Well that's my story in for this competition - entry is totally free (none of this entry fee nonsense) so really nothing is stopping us all from submitting a story.

Mine's in. We'll see if it goes anywhere.

Same to you, my friend. Should we succeed, we shall bump fists in dramatic fashion! (virtually, of course)

I submitted too!

@CameronJohnston Thanks for posting this here - I would not have found about it otherwise and it was a great motivator for me to write a longer short story than what I've been doing for the writing contests.

Ace! Always good to get more people writing. The more awesome fiction the better!

And the longlist is out. Hope some of us made the cut! All anonymous at the moment still...

The James White Award is pleased to be able to announce the longlisted stories for this year’s award. These are:

The Astronaut Tier
Carriola
Corrina, Fractured
Dagher’s Children
Don
Exposure
Leviathanology
May the Pain Guide You Home
Morrigan
Shepherd Boy Balances the Hundred Souls
Sim World Scripting Derby
Skinbone
The Cut
The Devil’s Breath
The Dying Glass
The Origin of Serendipity
Tumbler
Authors of other submissions can consider their stories released.

We hope to announce the shortlist within two weeks and the winner shortly afterwards.

Note that, at this stage, the stories are still being judged using our anonymous system, hence no authors’ names can be included at this time.

The award administrator, Martin McGrath, apologised to the delays in this year’s competition: “We know it is frustrating for authors who are waiting for a response and we’re taking steps to ensure that this doesn’t happen again in future. We will be announcing changes to the competition’s timing for future competitions before opening for next year’s submissions. Thank you for sticking with us.”

Thanks for the update! I'm not on the list, but I'm glad to know my story is free to move on to other submissions.

I wonder if they're ever going to announce the shortlist? They said it would be updated by May 17, and, uh ... it hasn't. :p

I'm wondering about this as well. It's taking forever.

It just seems to be the standard. I waited for three months beyond the announced date for the first short list for another competition (Aeon Award). Now the second shortlist is over a month late... and there's another announcement after that. I noticed that last year was the same, they announced the winner of 2015 in November 2016!  :-\

Not much you can do but wait.

HOT DAMN.

They finally announced the short list today, and guess who's on it?

We are pleased to be able to announce the shortlist for this year’s competition.

The stories that have made it through to the final selection are:

Don – Steve Dubois
May the Pain Guide You Home – Daniel Roy
The Morrigan – Stewart Horn

Congrats to our very own @CameronJohnston! Now the painful wait for the final story beings (but regardless, it's awesome that you managed to hit the short list).

For your sake, I hope they are better at sticking to their announced dates than Albedo1. I'm still waiting on an announcement that was due at the "end of April." And the one before that was three months overdue...

Ah well. Didn't win but Stewart Horn winning is still awesome. He's in my writing group and it's a cracking story.

I was rooting for you, Cam. My story was long-listed, but didn't make it into the final cut, so I was hoping some from F-F would win. But, it's cool that you know the person who did, and can at least cheer for your friend if you didn't land the award. Regardless, congrats on making the short list!

It takes a sincere and kind spirit to be graceful and supportive when our friends get what we desire. For my part, I am glad you made it so far and look forward to your day in the sun.

I encouraged him to enter in the first place so technically it's a sort of win for me too :p

Regardless, it's a good feeling to be short listed in the first place.

We should all definately enter next year if still eligable!
