in no particular order

Terry Pratchett
James Clavell
Brandon Sanderson
Patrick Rothfuss
Neil Gaiman
Julian May
Stephen R. Lawhead
Robin Hobb
Steven Erikson
Tolkien

it's a lot harder to pick specific works by said authors

If I'm adding cartoonists into the mix I'd have to include:
Erika Moen
Amy Falcone
Zach Weiner (SMBC)
Randall Munroe (xkcd)

Mine would still end up being fantasy save one.

#1 - Patrick Rothfuss - anything
#2 - Anthony Ryan - anything
#3 - Thaddeus White - Sir Edric's Temple is amazingly funny, but I'll read anything.
#4 -  D.Z.C. (Zichao Deng) - only new one who's not fantasy. He does mystery/crime with a cynical protagonist who isn't strait-laced. It's his humor that kills me. I'll ready anything of his.
#5 - Dean Koontz - Phantoms
#6 - Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman - The Twin's Saga
#7 - David Eddings - Sparhawk series. Oldie but goodie.
#8 - Edgar Allan Poe - anything

I think I'll stop there. The others kinda wash together.

Of course this list is always changing.

In no particular order:

-George Orwell, 1984
-J. R. R. Tolkien, Silmarillion
-George R. R. Martin, all A Song of Ice and Fire books
-Amin Maalouf, Samarkand
-J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
-Franz Kafka, The Metamorphosis
-War and Peace, Tolstoy
-Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri
-William Shakespeare, Macbeth
-F. S. Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

It doesn't look like it, but most books I read are fantasy, and I really enjoy them. But some books and authors just go beyond traditional genre barriers, giving us truly magnificent works.
"Poor gauzy souls trying to express ourselves in something tangible." - F. S. Fitzgerald

"Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love." - Robert Burns

1. Joe Hill (Heart Shaped Box)
2. John Connolly (Every Dead Thing)
3. Dennis Lehane (Darkness, Take My Hand)
4. Peter Clines (Ex-Heroes)
5. Dean Koontz (Odd Thomas)

Those are all I can think of at this point.
