Shape Shifter Romance Novels
« on: February 28, 2014, 12:20:57 AM »
I have just stumbled across a whole new sub genre whilst perusing best selling fantasy and sci fi novels for the kindle.  Shape Shifter romances.  Will have to post some jpegs later on the worst covers thread.

I think it was at number 12 on the list, currently outselling most other sci fi and fantasy novels on the kindle - a romance novel about a love affair with a were bear. (Anyone else remember these as cute kids toys in the early 90s?)  Intrigued I clicked for a further look and behold - more were bear romances came up. And reading reviews apparently shape shifter romance novels are a "thing." Anyone ever read one? Elfy perhaps? Do the naughty scenes only involve the shape shifter in human form? Or is he sometimes in animal form? (Like the dinosaur erotica - Ravished by a Raptor!) The mind boggles...  Is there any sub genre now that has not been tapped into now?

Oh boy, this just makes me think of the furries *shudders*

I read a short story of this sub genre a couple of months ago. It was fairly tame - the woman only sleeping with her animal/lover when he was in his human form. She also met the shape shifter as a human first, I don't think I would have liked it as much if it were the other way around.

Didn't realise that the sub-genre was so huge though. To me it doesn't sound... right.

This makes up probably 75% of the ebooks my library offers in the 'fantasy' genre (slightly different type of fantasy that I mean when I am looking for books)

Yeah, they really need to tidy up the genres on Kindle.  The best selling sci fi/ fantasy list is just clogged up with cheap self published paranormal romance novels it seems.  I would probably find way more books to buy if I didn't have to wade through all of those every time I check in on the list to see if there are any great deals.  I think they get so high up the best selling lists due to the very cheap prices they are sold at.  Even though it does surprise me that they outsell more established writers and better reviewed books (even if those are sold at 4 to 10'pounds rather than free or 99p)

I can't think of anything I've actually read that primarily concerned itself with a romance or relationship between a shape shifter and a person, but it's not all that uncommon or new really. At the heart of it this is what Beauty and the Beast is. I guess when I think about it, isn't a shape shifter also a werewolf? So if that's the case yes I have read books about that. The Parasol Protectorate immediately springs to mind. There's elements of it in ASoIaF with the warging, although none of the characters have had actual relationships with them.
I will expand your TBR pile.
