If you like historical detective novels, maybe check out Paul Doherty's Egyptian stuff. Really well done imo.

Maybe look up James McEllroy's stuff if you haven't done so already.

Also, despite knowing this is kinda the opposite of the sort of what you asked... but John le Carre's A Call for the Dead is basically a detective story, only with a spy instead of a detective. And very good. Even if its fairly modern British...
