What Non-Fantasy are you currently reading?
« on: November 08, 2019, 03:44:53 PM »
(we needed this thread, I think)

I'm currently reading Diary of a bookseller, by Shaun Bythell.
It's as it says, a diary of his life running a (really big) second hand bookshop in Wigtown(south Scotland), and it's very funny and interesting.
Reading it makes me want to support these type of bookshops more, and my problem is that I already don't have enough time to read 'recent' books, to buy older ones on top. Although sometimes you do get very good finds!

Sci-fi excluded too?

I finished Murderbot and will start Bobbiverse after current book. Probably Sanderson’s Skyward book 2 if it gets released by then.

I'm not currently reading any non-fantasy but planning to read Oblomov when I have some off time.
Kallor shrugged. 'I've walked this land when the T'lan Imass were but children. I've commanded armies a hundred thousand strong. I've spread the fire of my wrath across entire continents, and sat alone upon tall thrones. Do you grasp the meaning of this?'

'Yes' said Caladan Brood. 'You never learn'

About a couple of months ago, I came across Lost Horizon by James Hilton in a book store. Had good memories when I read that all those years before, so bought it.

Was as good in the reread. Loved it. Probably the first physical book I bought in many years.

I just finished Dan Brown's Origin and am now rereading Da Vinci Code. Interesting to reread it now I've written my own novels. I see it from a different point of view.

I just reread some of the Modesty Blaise books (not comics). Think James Bond but as a female ex crime lord with lots of martial arts experiences. Better stories, a great duo (Willie Garvin rocks) and good humor.

I'm now reading How to be right... in a world gone wrong, by James O'Brien.
He's been the host of a phone-in radio show for over 10 years. Basically people call in to say whatever they want, and James asks the 'why' questions, asks them to justify their beliefs - and this is where usually things fall apart, because they're just repeating what they hear and read on certain media.

In this book he selects a few controversial issues and shares conversations, and what he believes are the main reasons for the current problems.

Very interesting, making me think of my own justifications.

Luckily I'm right, so I don't need any justifications. ;)

It's been a while since I logged in. At least I've been reading fairly regularly these past few months. I've mainly been reading non-fiction; I began David Wallace's The Broom of the System, but my sister-in-law borrowed it from me, and hasn't returned it yet.
Currently reading - Michael Whitman and Herbert Mattord's Principles of Information Security. Among other things, it focuses on the difference between law and ethics and the synergy between these similar yet distinct fields. Especially in the context of security. It also presents an introductory account of the ways in which private and state entities go about monitoring and ensuring info security. Really interesting so far.

Reading up LAW 2001 textbook of my university, which is mostly about my country's real estate laws. I managed to give my parents a good advice regarding the plot of land they maybe receiving from my grandmother, so I guessed these knowledge turned out to be quite useful, I think.

I've just read Greta Thunberg's small book of her speeches, Nobody is too small to make a difference.
I thought I knew things about the climate crisis, but she opened my eyes even more.
I need to change more things...

Someone somewhere needs to make these into a film franchise and do it right. 3 attempts since the '60's and they've all managed to muck it up one way or another.
I will expand your TBR pile.
