Title: [AUG 2020] - Dialogue - Voting Thread
Post by: ScarletBea on September 05, 2020, 04:07:19 PM
It's time to vote on the August Writing Contest: "Dialogue"

This time we got 4 entries - thanks to all who participated!

Please read through all of the entries in the submission thread and place your votes for your favourite entry in this thread. You won't be able to see the vote breakdown until the vote closes, so spread the word for others to come and vote! We do ask that if you entered, to vote for someone else.

The key for the numbers of votes is this: 1-5 entries: 1 vote, 6-10 entries: 2 votes, 11-15 entries: 3 votes, 16-19: 4 votes, 20-25: 5 votes, 26+: 6 votes

Remember that the winning entry will be posted on the main Fantasy-Faction site in a few months (I'm still hopeful of getting the access to do this...)

Good luck to all our entrants and thank you for taking the time to read the stories and vote! :)

Hard to choose! Could have gone either way on two of them.
Nice stuff, folks.

Just removed vote because  number of votes for each entrant  are showing already  not just which I voted for.
@ScarletBea, @xiagan please could you fix this?

Sorry guys, it might have changed the option when I changed the end date and I didn't notice :-[

I've put it back and reset the votes, so could the 2 people who had already voted do so again?
@JMack and maybe @Nora?

One week to vote!

I just voted, and loved the story I chose :D
I also liked 2 more, but there was something (that I'll tell afterwards) why I didn't vote for them.

Ooooh 10 votes so far and 2 stories tied in first place.... will you be the one to break it?

Oh nice! 10 votes is a lot, that is surprising TBH. Thanks to the 6 people who've voted without having participated!

Not like we'll see the consequences of that for a good long while as the website has just so much backlog to work through...

Congratulations @Jake Baelish and @Nora for your joint win :D

They were great stories, in a month that I think was really hard!!

I voted for Jake, as I felt that it had more of a plot without much "telling".

Uwah, thanks a lot guys. I voted for Jake too. I can't help but feel it's a sneaky win, because I felt no inspiration this month and really struggled birthing this story. I think Jake's is better and ought to have had the upper hand, but I already did my all by voting for him, so I'll take it :-p

@Alex Hormann you really wrote in a type of world I love. You story reminded me of the game Control, and while I appreciated the paranormal, haunted element, I felt some of the lines felt a little forced or on the nose. Aka, would a person really monologue to the empty screen in such a plot-expositionary way? I was torn because I love the idea of the world, but it rendered in as crisp a way as the trio of voices in Jake's. But good work any way, fun world!

@NightWrite I'm surprised you kept it this short! Was a little saddened by the lack of tension/realisation. It felt like an opening chapter to a good story. The world and character were intriguing, but there was no plot to really speak of. I liked the voices, the banter, but a couple places I lost track of who was speaking, as the way they expressed themselves was too similar. If I remember, you picked the one you weren't feeling hot for right? I'd like to read the fuller version of the story where you put in the world building. I'm curious.

Nora, I really agree with you here, the above bits are almost the same as my notes!

This is nice news to log-in to, thanks to those who voted for me  ;D

Happy to share the win with Nora, I enjoyed your story, it had a couple of nice twists and got my vote :)

Actually really enjoyed this theme, I mulled over a load of ideas from the moment the 3 themes were announced but nothing seemed to work as 'dialogue only'. Somehow, adding a '3rd character' actually made things a lot more workable!

Congrats, both of you! I was surprised how well only-dialogue worked in all the stories. :)

Congratulations to both, great having a double win. @Jake Baelish you got my vote because it is hard to do 'show' not 'tell' with dialogue and your story showed beautifully. Also I had no idea what was happening for ages- so well done.
But all good stories in a hard theme and enjoyable reading. :D

It was indeed the one I wasn't as psyched about, though I had even more trouble getting anything out of the other idea.

The idea for this one was born from a little unfinished nugget of a thing I'd made back in 2018 when I tried to adapt the prompts of the Adventure April Challenge, a month long drawing challenge, into a writing challenge for myself. Each of the little stories I tried doing in various ways, such as a journal entry or in first person. Or in this case, my first try at all dialogue which I never really finished.

Which is part of why it feels incomplete, at least to me looking back on it. I never finished the challenge because of lack of time. And I didn't bring as much as I could have into this story, though the entire thing I did back in 2018 felt a bit disjointed as I admittedly didn't plan well enough for it (which also lead to me not finishing the challenge).
