Title: [AUG 2020] - Dialogue - Discussion Thread
Post by: xiagan on June 01, 2020, 10:18:05 PM
AUGUST: Dialogue

This month's theme is not a theme as you know it but a writing exercise. We want you to tell a story only in dialogue form, with no descriptions at all. All kinds of Fantasy or Science Fiction are eligible.

Submission topic will be created on the first of August.

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

Look forward to reading these entries, one of my favourite forms of short story. Could it even entice @Rukaio_Alter back?

It will be enticing me back, @Lady Ty !!  :D  I'm 300 words shy of a finished story. It feels odd not to be able to submit for another month and some, but I'm glad, as I'm not sure I can come up with a story for this month. Image isn't working for me...

Might try the July one though. Hope you've been well? And everyone, really...

So nice to hear from you, @Nora! x

Sorry for the long absence @ScarletBea !! I sometimes hover a little, but I've spent my pandemic time not writing at all... and instead channelled all my creativity into doing 3D art. I am trying to pick back up other hobbies so I don't burn out, so I'm making an effort and trying to write, but I'm really an oddball sort of person, when it comes to hobbies. I don't want to let go of writing though... So I'm gonna try and be more diligent.

Looking forward to reading your stories again @Nora, you always seem to manage an unusual twist. Hoping life is working as well for you as possible in this strange world just now.  ;D

I'm deeply stuck this month so I hope there is a twist at all xD
I have two potential storylines and one is deeply depressing, and the other is much nicer, but I'm much more stuck with it.

That's because you're posting in the August discussion thread instead of the July one ;)
This one's Dialogue, the other one's Old Man's Tale.

"This is hard."
"You can do it!"
"Don't know if I can."
"Plenty of time to get it done."

Hehe, I already had a couple half done stories that fit this theme, but I decided to make the stories I abandoned for last month into a pure dialogue. Wrote up late night notes... needs more work but I'm pleased with it.
Good luck Alex you can defo do it

So I wrote a little dialogue blurb down at the start of the month on an index card. A few days later, I can't find, so que a whirlwind cleaning and decluttering of my space (which I should have done ages ago). Still can't find it....

:D (cries inside)

Time to rewrite from memory!

Time to rewrite from memory!
I typed it down once I realized the index card was missing, but it didn't feel like I remembered everything I wrote down right. So I went looking.

Now, however, I'm decluttering and organizing not to find the index card itself (my story has already evolved), but because searching for it made it clear my creative space needs a good decluttering. For example, the other day I found an unused pack of charcoal sticks I had to buy for a class in college that's been taking up space for over a decade, but I don't even like using charcoal as a medium.

We have one entry with ~10 days to go...

I hope you're all stretching your writing muscles in this (slightly more) difficult theme prompt!
I can't wait to read them :D

Oh Bea, 10 days is not even a decent deadline, don't you worry xD

Hoping to get the bulk of mine written this weekend. I know what I'm going to write, just need to get the words done.

Alas, I won't make this one, as I'm working to another deadline for a novel competition. Need to pull together the dreaded synopsis in the next ten days or so.

Just adding the last bits to mine, and I'll sneak in before the end of the month. Proper tricky, this is.

As usual, I'm leaving it open a couple more days after month end, for the finishing touches :)

That's good! I haven't gotten the time or groove for anything yet, but I've finished my main video game (Ghost of Tsushima) and I've finished my latest 3D project, so I can now spend all of tomorrow focusing on this instead and try to shake something off quickly.

I was originally going to try to make a multiple choice twine game for this topic, for the heck of it, but also got distracted learning unnecessary coding for Twine, and spent all of that time writing a totally unrelated story.

*sigh*

I'm sorry xD

I could easily have spent another day fiddling over the final line, but I've submitted instead.

Dang I totally abandoned the idea I was on till a couple hours ago and moved on for the one I just posted... I had started it a couple years ago I think, and had dismissed it earlier in the month as not interesting or viable.

Funnily enough I still don't find it interesting or funny the way my Mummy dialogue one was. I don't know why anyone would enjoy reading this, it's making me feel super weird about it, but I just wanna put something out there for the month no matter what xD

Definitely not my best work, not even close. I am looking forward to next month though.

I hope to finish mine today. The issue is I'm stuck between one I'm not enthused about, but have an easier time to write, and one that I'm more interested in working with, but keeps going off on rambling tangents.

I think I might go with the one I'm not interest in. If only so I have something given how little I've submitted in the past year given I keep telling myself to get back in the game so to speak. (My creative spirit has been kinda dead the past year.)

@NightWrite I feel you very deeply, my creative spirit has been 100% sucked up by the 3D work I've been doing and left nothing much to spare for writing.

Please go for the uninspired one so I don't feel alone with my own!  :P

Oh I am and I'm finding it's the opposite of what often happens for me. Frequently I push the bounds of the upper word limit, having to cut out a bunch of stuff to fit.

This time, however, I'm barely making the 500 word minimum and have been padding it out in various ways. One of the characters, for example, doesn't do contractions, both to give them a sense of separation from the other two characters who do use them and to pad the story a bit.

While I'm neutral to my story itself, I'm grateful for the prompt as it's shown me what happens when I strip back everything else.

Thanks, guys!
Is that it, these 4 stories? Nobody doing last minute finishes?

It's my second time doing it and I find it shocking, how different it feels, when the theme is imposed vs when you do it because it strikes your fancy and suits what you're writing at the time. It's not easy to pull off for sure.
