Title: The best story of 2015 - Vote now!
Post by: xiagan on February 01, 2016, 09:23:59 PM
For the second time we are choosing a best of the best story from our writing contests!

In 2015 15 stories won our monthly contest (because of ties in the voting).

Everybody has three votes and I'm going to run the poll for 90 days - so you have plenty of time to read all the stories and to decide which one (or two or three) you liked best.

Be sure to tell everybody that here are 15 top stories (each one already won a contest!) that can be read for free - we just ask you to vote. :)

Oh wow.
I was thinking: if we have an average of 12 stories each month, at 1,500 words each, it means that last year we read 216,000 words on top of our books! How many pages are those many words? 2.5 pages per story/1,500 words? Then it's around 360 pages!!

And now I'll read 15 more stories, again!

Life's great :D

Well, I guess that answered my question in the Dec Voting Thread.  :P

Anyway, I got four horses in this race, people. That's nearly a third of the year. Therefore, logically, since you have three votes, at least one of those votes must legally go to one of my stories. That's how these things work, don't try to deny it. And definitely don't think about it. I said the word 'logically' therefore it must be true.

On a separate, more serious note, I do wonder whether we really need 3 whole months to vote. I know there was a was a problem with lack of votes last year, but the writing contest seems to have grown a much more consistent reader/voter base since then and most people have already read at least a few of the winners. Maybe cut it down to 45 days with the occasional nudging reminder? We can always extend it again if necessary.

On another separate, less serious note, it feels weird that half my entries are 'Rukaio Alter' while the other half are 'Rukaio_Alter'. I know it's a really small complaint but it's making me feel all OCD about it.

Voted!

Seeing the winners listed like that, it's interesting how much the consensus has differed from my votes - I voted for the winner in only three months. Which happens to make this a pretty easy vote for me! (http://boincstats.com/image/emoticon/happy.gif)

Did you read them all again? I can't remember any details, except for a couple (and the December ones, hehe), so I'll have to re-read.
And me having voted for them at the time is no guarantee I'll still like them, in comparison with the others :)

 I voted last night.
I didn't re-read them all, because I remember by the titles which ones I felt really passionate about.
And since I was legally required to make at least one vote for RA...  ;) ;D
And can't vote for my own  8)

Now, if I was only given one vote, I'd definitely have had to go back to read the three I chose just now.

Voted just re-read the three that had stood out for me to make sure they were my top choice from all those winners. Good luck, can't wait to see results. ;D

What if we're deeply egotistic and genuinely think that our story is the best of the year?

*go hide in a corner*  ::)

This will take a little reading, since i wasn't tree for the two first month and didn't vote for all of these stories so forgot a few, but damn, am I PROUD to have made it on the list! On my first year as a wannabe writer, from people of such good taste and talent as most of you guys... Almost makes me teary! Snif!  :'( :-[ ;D

Nah, no need since I remember enough of all of them to be sure those three are the ones I liked the most.  :)

Four people voted so far and the twelve votes are spread over ten stories. This will be interesting. :)

Ha! And this means that Rukaio Alter and Rukaio_Alter are two different authors, so RA does not have 4 wins, and I, yes I and only I, am the GREAT BWAHAHA OF THE MONTHLY CONTEST!!!!!!!!

[looks at screen. Wonders if he's already had too much coffee, way too early]

Voted, and I didn't need to re-read them after all: once I went to the story, I could remember them after all.
I could have used another 5-6 votes, yes ;D

I also vote for reducing the voting time: end of April? That is FAR too long...

Hey people, come vote!

It was a bit odd to pick among stories like this, since they weren't all the ones I voted for, but I'm glad that @OnlyOneHighlander (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=35404) 's story was in it for June, cause I reckon it's my fav of the whole year.

Gah, I am still computer-less so I haven't managed to re-read these yet. I shall try to slyly catch up at work today, a mission that will take all my cunning and guile.

And thank you @Nora (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40237), you've made my day. I reckon that was the best thing I wrote all year last year. Maybe flash fiction should be my thing.

Gah, I am still computer-less so I haven't managed to re-read these yet. I shall try to slyly catch up at work today, a mission that will take all my cunning and guile.

And thank you Nora, you've made my day. I reckon that was the best thing I wrote all year last year. Maybe flash fiction should be my thing.

Well, you've got quite the talent for the sad and gritty and gruesome. I say that thinking of your "narrative Friction" short, which I really liked as well, and I'll be sore next year when it's not on the 2016 story poll.

On the short fiction one, you've made an amazing job of giving a setting without a line of description, making a character through some funny lines but mostly sad events - forgotten, uncared for, and suffering the last blow of losing his enemy, the only person left not in his employ who would have cared - and as the end came I thought it'd be a funny line, or just a sad one, but the way the count is just all so serious "it should have been me!" is brilliant, because it makes it all real. If it had been a funny line, as the exposed chicken bone sort of prepared me for, it would have been less.
As it is you've created a character that's deep into how own story and it's quite emotional for us to see him going through this. It's one of the stories that marked me the most this year.

When I say you have a talent for that, it's because it's the same feeling I had in your 4th wall story. Sad but read with a grin on my face, until the end comes, and then it goes right down dark, and I was exactly like that :

Though I do not have a moustache.
You're great at balancing humour and darkness, and the serious endings kinda make me reconsider why I was grinning, for each stories.
So yeah, get yourself a new computer presto and start participating more, I want to read more from you @OnlyOneHighlander (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=35404)

Nine voters is a bit less, considering we had 17 people vote for the best story of 2014.

Please vote! I know it's not easy with so many great stories but please give it a try! :)

And @Nora (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40237)...

...again mucho thanks for all your kind words. And I like the picture. I surprised myself with the ending for 'Narrative Friction'. After I finished it and read it back I thought, wow, grim, must have been in a dark mood that day. And I hope to be back in the saddle again soon. Off to the computer shop tomorrow with all my coins and rubies :-)

Sorry I've not been about much lately, it's been a crazy time of it. Plus my good lady has asked for book 3 for christmas of the dragons stories I write for her. Given my limited time I doubt I'll be able to get that down and do the monthly comps... but you never know, the right theme might tempt me out into the light.

Just make certain that whatever you do, you vote for me are confident you've chosen me the stories you're most happy to read provided they're mine. That's really all that matters. It's not, but I'm pretending it is to be humble.

Also, vote for me.

What have you been doing after all the bumps of the last couple of weeks? ;D

5 hours left now...

Pff, more than enough time! In fact, I'm just done!

I have to go to bed, but I know I shall wake up in the night and reach for my phone - just have to know the result here. They were all a pleasure to read so Good Luck everyone up there on the list, you are all our champion writers. :)

Wahey!
Congratulations @Jmack (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=37094)! :D :D

I voted for yours, @Saraband (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=32607) and @Rukaio_Alter (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40087)'s Mighty Beasts one (my favourite funny one ;D )

Congrats @Jmack (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=37094)!
You're stealing the emperor's crown there! Nice victory.  :P

I voted for the stories Junk Mail, Last Regrets, and Adrift. Liked all of them a lot. So congrats to you three as well, and many thanks to the two people who genuinely thought I wrote one of the three best stories of the year, it's very flattering!!

Jmack ascended to godhood and now reigns supreme over all the land, all the oceans and all the stars of this corner of Fantasy-Faction.
Emperor Rukaio has no choice but to submit and give offerings, last he incurs Jmack's wrath.

I voted for Science Fiction, Rogues and Politics. With a little more help my almost last minute vote could have set-up a quadruple tie  ::) I wonder what would have happened.

Wished for more votes, as I really, really wanted to vote for Nora's Exorcist and Fairy Tales as well. Hm, I guess then Jmack would win anyway.

I have to say I'm pretty tickled for that story to win.  ;D Thank you to the 6 who voted for it!

Meanwhile, is there a lot of quality in here, or what? So many 5s and 4s, plus great stuff that didn;t get as many votes but easily deserved them. Personally, I went back and forth between OneHighlander's story and Nora's.

Here's to good stories in 2016.
But in the meantime, I'll take the bragging rights!  ;D ;D

Yes I did wake up at exactly 2.37 am and was happy at result, but now I will comment. So glad that particular story won Jmack, always been one of my favourites and got my vote. The others  I chose here were tebakutis and Nora.

Funnily I had the same thought this morning. ;D
Either Bea deems it worthy of her time or I will set it up in a bit more than a week when I'm on vacation in Sweden. :)
