Stand Out Story?
« on: August 03, 2014, 04:02:53 PM »
Hi guys and girls,

For those who have been entering this a while, can you think of one or two monthly writing contest stories that have REALLY stood out?

Thought it would make a fun thread :)

I've thought about a little ebook with the best stories. But it's just a thought.
If you are going to make more anthologies we could think about adding some of the really good stories to them. :)

You could maybe do something like a quarterly or bi-annual e-zine...including the winning stories from the previous 3/6 months, a selection of future release reviews and writing articles from the main pages and maybe a competition to win a copy of an upcoming book club read. Also a spotlight feature on an author / publisher / cover artist etc would be cool.

So would I. It's a great idea and a good way to bring some wider coverage to the forum and it's members.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Of the winning stories in recent months, I think ladygreen's 'Artisan's Mask', Elfy's 'Life and Death' and ACSmyth's 'Stab and Twist' really stand out for me (ladygreen's in particular).  Among other entries, I really enjoyed 'Scapegoat' by AshKB as well.

Oh, and I can definitely echo the sentiments of everyone else on this thread.  An e-zine/ebook sounds like a very good idea.

Noticed I forgot to answer the op question :p

The story I liked the most was Ladygreen's "Artisan's Mask", for certain.

Thank you Carter. I am flattered that you mentioned my entry. I agree about Ladygreen's winner too. That was quite well written.

Defo up for doing a not for profit collection of the short stories.

We'd pay to have 50-100 x printed (limited, collector's editions) then make an ebook too. Maybe see if we can get an illustrator involved.

We can then sell these for COST PRICE if the authors of the stories all agree; as you know, we don't look for profits at F-F (and, as such, we'd ask no rights over the stories: they could be used elsewhere too).

This will depend on the author's thoughts. I shall get in touch with them and see what they think :)

Browsing back over the monthly contests since I discovered FF, there are lots of stories that I remember fondly. :)

Narrowing them down to my top five:

[Mar 2014] "The Heir of Foulstania" by pornokitsch
[Jan 2014] "Stab and Twist" by ACSmyth
[Aug 2013] "A Fine Morning for Running" by ladygreen
[Jan 2013] "Podge" by blendyface
[Sep 2012] "Brother's Lament" by Lionwalker
