Offline AuthorsHand

Hello everyone,

I know there are a lot of writers here, and I've followed the Monthly Writing Contest here on FF for a number of years. I know this will appeal to some of you looking to get traditionally published or self-published.

This is a no-strings-attached, free competition to enter. We're looking to give back to the writing community after an extremely successful first year in business (with very experienced editors, mind you). So without further adieu ado (thank you Nora), here it is:

Guidelines:

1) Start writing a Speculative Fiction Short Story

2) Follow us on Instagram, Facebook and/or Twitter

3) Submit your story before September 1, 2019 @ 9PM EST.

All Submissions Must:

-be a maximum 5,000 words

-be double-spaced with numbered pages and submitted in .doc or .pdf format

-be submitted anonymously to ensure objectivity (your name will be on the submission form)

-be original work. All submissions will be checked for plagiarism. Fan-fic is not allowed

-be submitted by e-mail with your name, word count and preferred e-mail address

-submit only ONE short story. Any authors with more than one submission will be automatically disqualified

Prizes:

1st Place: An editing package worth up to $5000.00.

For our hand-picked winner, they will receive a free developmental edit, line edit and copyedit, valued between $3000.00 - $5000.00. Once your novel is written (or if it is already written!) we’ll polish that baby up for you and get it ready for market. No strings attached.

OR

Alternatively, if you don’t have a book written and need a leg up, you can take advantage of our mentorship services and, with our help, you will have your manuscript completed before the end of 2019.

2nd Place: 25% Off Any Two Services up to $1000

For our runner-up, they receive 25% off any two services, including Mentorship, Developmental, Line and Copyediting.

3rd Place: 25% Off Any One Single Service up to $500

For our third place contestant, they receive 25% off any one service, including Mentorship, Developmental, Line and Copyediting.

Important Dates:

July 1, 2019 Competition opens

September 1, 2019 Competition closes

All Questions and Submissions must be sent to contact@AuthorsHand.com

And you can see our website here with more details and updates: www.authorshand.com/contest

Thank you so much, and I would be happy to answer any questions here if that would suit some of you best.

It's without further ado, dear. Adieu means farewell in French, as in forever... Literally "to god", because you'll see each other next in heaven.

Edit : It'd be nice to know who your judges are. Also, blimmey, but 2nd and 3rd place get to PAY YOU? I'm sure it's interesting to people looking to self publish... But honestly you could toss in something free... If I were to be first runner up i'd have to actively decline my prize from you, it's a pretty discouraging offer.

"She will need coffee soon, or molecular degeneration will set in. Her French phrasing will take over even more strongly, and soon she will dissolve into a puddle of alienation and Kierkegaardian despair."  ~ Jmack

Wishy washy lyricism and maudlin unrequited love are my specialty - so said Lady_Ty

I was confused with adieu too :)
Kallor shrugged. 'I've walked this land when the T'lan Imass were but children. I've commanded armies a hundred thousand strong. I've spread the fire of my wrath across entire continents, and sat alone upon tall thrones. Do you grasp the meaning of this?'

'Yes' said Caladan Brood. 'You never learn'

Also, no mentions of publishing rights is always dubious. What happens to the winning stories?

Nice catch, Nora. Quick type up, so I appreciate the correction. Looking for a job in editing?  ::)

Yes, the 2nd and 3rd place prizes are geared towards people looking to self-publish. In fact, this entire contest is geared towards the self-publishing industry, as is the business itself. I'm sorry you feel it's a discouraging offer, but their are plenty of others that would snap up this opportunity in a heartbeat.

We take entries on July 1st, and our judge will be announced before the end of the month.

Also, no mentions of publishing rights is always dubious. What happens to the winning stories?

The top 3 stories will be featured on the website with a link to the author's social media accounts and website (if applicable), along with an author profile and any links to their books currently available online. We reserve no right to any of the stories. This isn't being turned into a compilation, and no content will be used or published without the writer's explicit written permission.

I hope this clears some things up. Thank you so much for your questions and comments.  :)

So you are promoting your services in the form of a competition. No skin off my nose if people choose to take you up on that but not being involved in self publishing I am stunned at the numbers you are talking here. I suspect most self pubbed stories will gross less than 1k over their lifetime and most best selling fantasy Authors are going to see 10k a book tops. No mention of your credentials to carry out this work in a professional manner  or any real information about your business.

Thanks for the reply, Rostum. No problem - the competition isn't for everyone.

Which numbers are you concerned about? The cost of editing services in general or the fact that this is a free competition to enter? If you want more information on editing costs, you can see them very clearly here: https://www.authorshand.com/editing-proofreading

The $5000.00 is to ensure that even if our winner has a 150,000 word book to edit, the costs will be covered. This is, very simply, a contest to win a line, developmental and copyedit for your book.

I understand the general reservations people have when it comes to any competition or advertisement, especially when it's new. Believe it or not, I'm a human too, and I know how invasive and irritating it is to be advertised to constantly.

Fact is we will see little financial benefit by promoting this contest, if any at all. We may see some benefit in brand recognition, but our goal is to bring in a quality writer that we can help publish and then be associated with going forward.

This is about as transparent as I can be. Once again, thank you for your questions, Rostum, and I'd be happy to answer any more should you have them.
