Title: Twitter
Post by: michaelramm on January 08, 2011, 01:19:12 PM
In the vein of the GoodReads (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/general-discussion/goodreads/) thread, I thought it would be good to start a similar twitter thread. I have been using Twitter since the beginning and I love it. I use it for so many things (friends, research, etc). It is my preferred social network.

My username is @michaelramm (http://twitter.com/michaelramm). Feel free to send me a follow.

I'm at www.twitter.com/itsKysis (http://www.twitter.com/itsKysis) on there.  I've been using Twitter for years, though it keeps eating my tweet number. *shrugs* Oh well.

Normally I tweet about my writing activities and when I update my writing blog, though from time to time I'll complain about work or other parts of life that are annoying but necessary... or talk about the random food I am eating.

I have another at www.twitter.com/kysisproduction (http://www.twitter.com/kysisproduction) but it has gone dead.  Partially because I never finished writing the screenplays we were going to produce, partially because my whole crew moved to all over the US before I could finish writing them, and I haven't put together a new group.  It may go active again, though.  We shall see.

Ok heres a challenge for you all. Although I work in IT{< not too sure why thats relevant}, I am not a member of any social networking sites as I have always thought that they are just a way for ppl to milk their own ego's. So my challenge to you all is:

Convince me to join Twitter.
All cash bribes/sexual favours will be considered.

I am also in IT and I use it for research. My company has started moving into the Server Virtualization world and there are a LOT of great resources on twitter. I follow a lot of Virtualization blogs and most of those guys are on twitter. So I can throw out a VMware questions in my stream, and within MINUTES i can have up to 15 answers from some of the top virtualization pros out there, including a number of folks at VMware.

There are a lot of ego strokers out there, but the key is to watch who you follow and who you allow to follow you. It takes a little getting used to, but it is my number 1 research tool.

Twitter is a fun way to meet people and talk about random stuff.  It's kind of like being stuck in line, and then having a cool conversation with someone you've never met.  The only difference is if they creep you out you can block them and if you like them you can end up being friends. :)  Assuming you don't creep them out, then they might end up blocking you instead. ;)

Oh and people following me, I have Alex Bell (The Ninth Circle, Jasmyn) and Suzanne McCleod (The Sweet Scent of Blood, The Cold Kiss of Death) plus Toby Frost (Space Captain Smith Trilogy). The last one's a bit of a cheat though cos he's in my writers circle lol! Oh, and Sue Cook off Crimewatch!

Post by: missoularedhead on February 05, 2011, 10:03:52 PM
I missed the post about why one should use twitter…

I like twitter for a couple of reasons.  One is that it keeps things short. But more so, as a rural community college instructor, I really don't have a lot of people to talk pedagogy with.  However, with twitter, I can see what other people are doing in their online classes, discuss the latest plugins, follow innovative things like the Digital Humanities stuff that's happening right now, find out about conferences and grants.

And oh, via twitter, I managed to snag a 4 day pass for SDCC, Wild Wild West Con, and PHXCon.  All for the super early buyer price.
Title: Re: Twitter
Post by: MTMaenpaa on February 06, 2011, 12:39:47 AM
I too was a late-comer to Twitter, being generally stodgy about internet social trends.  What got me using it, other than as a promotional tool for my blog, was to help establish an Author platform.  From what I've heard from friends in the industry (interns mostly), publishers look for authors that have begun to self-promote at least a year in advance, from blogging to tweeting.  The more of a following you can develop for yourself, the more likely a publisher will consider your work.  Seems like sound logic, so I figured what the hell.
Title: Re: Twitter
Post by: WizardofWestmarch on February 07, 2011, 06:50:46 AM
Twitter has a couple interesting uses.

One, you can set up RSS feeds for interesting keywords (for me, I follow Clojure [an interesting  programming language]) which has lead me to having discussions with some rather brilliant people, 140 characters at a time, including authors of some of the books about the language that are coming out.

It's also let me talk with some of my fellow writing enthusiasts local to me (I live in the Denver area) mostly met through NaNoWriMo but some have been beyond that as well.

In general it's a great way to come in contact with very smart people and have some interesting discussions... within limits of course ;)

I use twitter on a fine line between sanity and what lies beyond. When I'm heavily into my writing twitter gives me that little bit of procrastination to do between sections. I use the #amwriting hashtag to keep in touch with others doing the same.
When I'm not actually writing, it makes me realise what an uphill struggle all this writing business is, but I keep it on in the background mostly for masochistic purposes.

I basically have Twitter where my life should be. You can find me at @eatthepen, usually complaining about having to write my PhD thesis. Or being hungry. Or flirting shamelessly, but it's OK to ignore that if you want.

I love the challenge of getting exactly what I want to say into 140 characters; brevity is the soul of wit, after all.

It's funny how some people just randomly follow you. Just got a girl that passes her time taking plenty of sexy pictures. Must have liked my plastic armor, for sure. Not complaining, though  ::)

Never forget the block feature, just in case it all gets a bit too much. Or report as spam.

Twitter is like a machine gun with unlimited ammo.

I don't even think I'm following a lot of stuff. Sleep and wake up with like 300+ new tweets. Might even miss some great things but I don't bother scrolling through everything.

Doesn't seem like my type of media, and yet it's regarded as the most popular one. I will agree it's a plus it can show a lot of different stuff (and with pictures) at the same time.

Lanko, it takes a while to get used to Twitter. Here's a few points that may help.

No  1 rule for new users: Just because someone follows you it does not mean you follow back.

A lot will just do so for commercial reasons, eg I advocate for Renewable Energy so lots of people selling solar roof tile packages and services follow, but I wouldn't follow back. I've noticed quite a few indy writers or book bloggers are following, probably because I RT so much about books and FF but I'm only following back ones I know here or admire.

This is not like making FB or GR friends. If perfectly nice people follow me and I don't follow, but still get a lot of their retweets through people I do follow, I use the Mute button a lot. They just never see my tweets and I never see theirs, but it's not making a point like Block which I use for adverts or for people who I find offensive.

Also now and again I put a Tweet out to say "Sorry, timeline getting too busy, please do not take offence if I unfollow," because some people who have similar interests also have huge dissimilar sport/other  interests and I get swamped. Do this with some people I actually know personally in the football season. Then I go through my Following and get rid of a lot.

Twitter is a useful tool, not a chat room type place, but you need to use  it to your own advantage.

I never go back and read my feed, so unless I see it as it happens. I probably miss it. But I did set up a "List" of publishers, I can look at that and see all of their tweets without having to filter through whatever the latest drama/outrage I may have missed. (There can be lots and lots of twitter drama). I also check a few friends here and there occasionally. But yeah, I'd rather read a book than read my entire Twitter feed every day.

Decided to dust off my twitter and give it a bit of a cleaning. I honestly had too much going on there, so I'm happy to have cut the accounts I follow down by over half, while picking up a few new accounts to follow that match my interests better.

Anyway, on there you can find me as (@)Direwolf_Snow! :)

Yeah, I read the twitter trolls and the occasional entertaining Twitter faux creative nonfiction (but really fiction) when it comes out on a Buzzfeed article.

As for actually using Twitter... I just set it up to automatically link to my Tumblr (kick-ass-quotes.tumblr.com and bradley-darewood.tumblr.com) :)  no idea how to use the damn thing.

Twitter is marginally less obnoxious than Facebook, though why the BBC promotes and uses it when they have their own IT infrastructure mystifies me. It doesn't seem much use unless you are famous. I contact all the people I know via email.
However, I have various SM accounts so I can see what people that DON'T email me or use their own sites are up to. The relevant Twitter one for my writing is

Maybe this is very old news, but since I'm not a Twitter regular user, I just discovered that they increased the limit from 140 characters to 280.

What does anybody that uses the platform think of this?

Hmm I instinctively dislike it. I like things concise and can always click through into threads of tweets.

The only thing I like about the expanded character limit so far is it makes it a little easier to post interesting tidbits from my books when promoting them on Twitter. Other than that, I'm unimpressed.

It's probably a nerd thing, but I actually enjoyed the challenge of trying to fit a coherent thought into 140 characters. It was almost part of the appeal of Twitter - seeing if I could reword or reorganize a thought to fit into that 140 character limit. It also allowed me to READ the concise thoughts of others.

With double the character limit, that's all gone now, and in my recent posts I haven't noticed a character limit at all. I also find the double-length tweets less appealiing to read, and my feed more like a wall of text than a litany of concise statements. So as a user of Twitter as far back as 2013, my feelings about this change are the same as those when they removed the ability to see tweets in sequential order. I don't like it.

I think the fact that it forced people to be concise was the one thing Twitter had that separated it from other platforms. They've lost that now. And the fact that they continue to refuse to address their large problems with bots, white supremacists, and harassment is troubling and frustrating. Twitter is an interesting experiment, but I don't think they'll last another five years unless they pivot and improve dramatically.

Most of comments among people I interact with is that they prefer the 140 and will more or less stay with it.

I always like the brevity of Twitter and easily adapted to short comment. For me it is good exercise because I often run on needlessly.  Quite enjoy re writing to get inside the limit.

Guess it will be useful on ccasion to have a few extra words or characters to clarify as sometimes abbreviations can be misinterpreted. Not thrilled to see new blocks of text pop up and may avoid reading them.

Twitter asked what users wanted. Universal cries of "Ability to have short Edit window"
Twitter gives us 280 characters. ???

needless to say there were many replies suggesting how it continued. ;D

Interestingly enough, Twitter found in it's tests before the official launch that only 1% of tweets hit the 280 character limit, with 9% not passing. So it would appear most Twitter users like the in between?

I'm still against it. I liked short tweets, but it's not like it stopped anyone. You would get tweets like... I've had a rough day today. 1/3. My mom ran over me with a car, and then my dog got bitten by a cat, and then 2/3. My aunt went crazy and tried to murder us. I hope my life clears up soon. 3/3

I just muted those people though, which is exactly what I will do if others start getting rambly. In other words, I doubt this 280 character limit will kill Twitter. It's just those of us who like it resisting change for the first couple of months, a common thing with the Internet.

I don't mind having space for a little more nuance; I suspect it will just be used for longer, ramblier blinkered declarations.

Another heads up to US Twitter followers who are also Rothfuss fans. He's just done some random signings in Minneapolis Airport at Word near Ch 13? Anyway don't think any of you are near or able to get  there fast enough, but point is Pat does this every time he has spare waiting time in an airport.  Those of you who travel for work or anytime at big airports may find it worth keeping an eye on his Twitter feed and/or having a quick check at airport bookshops. You may be lucky.  ;D
