I know a lot of people on Fantasy-Faction (me included) have found the forums through Overlord's Twitter account @fantasyfaction.  Just curious, how did you find the site?

It was twitter for me too, when Trudi Canavan retweeted one of the first articles here which was the most anticipated books of 2011.

I found this place on Twitter as well. Followed the Twitter account a while back but just recently checked this place out. I forget who originally linked @fantasyfaction in their tweet, unfortunately.

The November book club open voting tweet showed up in my twitter stream.  I clicked the link out of curiosity, and am happy I made that decision.

I wandered away from the herd and became ensnared  :o Actually, I'm not really sure, I just stumbled upon it by accident and thought it would be a good place to socialise, bookmarked it to come back, Google Chrome crashed so I had to uninstall/reinstall and couldn't remember the name then stumbled over it again! Yes, I have too much time on my hands today! ;)

I typed in "top ten fantasy novels for 2011" in Goggle to give me some ideas to what to read next and it sent me to a very cool website with a link to this Forum

How old is this place btw?

The site opened in November of 2010.  I think the forums started up just after that. :)

I'm a follower of the Alternate History Weekly Update, a blog that (you guessed it!) follows the burgeoning alternate history genre.  The editor mentioned in this post (http://alternatehistoryweeklyupdate.blogspot.com/2012/04/weekly-update-48.html) that you guys were hosting a writing competition with a $500 prize, which was more than enough to send me scurrying over.

I receive several newsletters which are directed at helping starving artists like me to sites and magazines accepting submissions, paying and non-paying, as well as contests to enter. I am currently in the querrying process for my unpublished novel, "Special," and am trying to build up my bio and my bank account - what bank account! I was directed to the Fantasy Anthology Writing Contest, and I also intend to submit to Fantasy Faction.

I found Fantasy Faction through Pat's Fantasy Hotlist, specifically when he posted about the opportunity for the Fantasy Faction Anthology. I have always dabbled in writing, so that seemed like the perfect opportunity to get my name out there if I win.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned this! I found the site on the list of finalists in the GoodReads Independent Book Bloggers Awards. I also found a large collection of lame blogs, blogs written by arrogant people, and blogs I'm not interested in. And then there was this, which is now my favorite website! :D

I found the site just from searching the web for writing forums. I want to be part of a group that engages in peer review with the object of honing and polishing our art.

It seems that the community here is a little inactive, but I like to think that you all are busy writing.  ;)

I actually found this site very recently because someone at bestfantasybooks mentioned that this sites listing of Daylight Wars as being one of the best fantasy books last year as a good example of how diverse opinions are across various fantasy groups because in contrast, bestfantasybooks listed it as being one of the most disappointing reads of the year. Surprisingly in all of my Google searching I never once stumbled upon this fantastic resource.

I found this place shortly after I made it… It was like 'I shall make a forum' and then… it was here :D :P ;) At first it was lonely, but then, over the years, people started visiting… some for a short visit, but others hung around and we became friends. Today, the forums are something I am very proud of. We've been through busy times, quiet times and just about everything in between, but there has never been a day that I haven't enjoyed at least one post on these boards and almost every day someone or something on here makes me laugh. Again, I'm incredibly proud of this place and thank each and every one of you for finding us and taking the time to revisit - it means a huge deal :) Invite your friends, invite readers and writers you know and hopefully it'll be here for many years to come! I've enjoyed reading all these stories about how you found the place - keep 'em coming.

You might like to know that I have searched assiduously on Google for book forums and never seen this one in search results. admittedly I didn't search for 'fantasy' but I would have thought that 'book forum' should have found ... well book forums :) perhaps this is something you could look at in your keywords / search optimization:) because this looks like a great forum and its a pity if people aren't finding it.

I found your site because I was looking for worldbuilding tips on religion. Turns out FantasyFaction has a TON of other stuff besides that, and I've now bookmarked and downloaded all the web pages that relate to topics covered in my current manuscript.

Google in all honesty.

I was searching for like a fantasy fiction community/discussion place where I can explore books that I love (most of my friends are not big book or fantasy readers). Without having to have a lot of fan forum membership's for each individual author that I adore to read.
And to hopefully expand my collection of admiration with others who are liked minded.

Found the site when I search "best sites for writers" in on Google. Came up with The 100 Best Websites for Writers In 2015 on the first page. Clicked it and this was one of the hundred.

I actually don't know what snapchat is. An app I guess? I've never owned a smartphone. I've actually only touched one for about a total of an hour in my life. And a major part of my job is to make websites work on smartphones...  ???

I actually don't know what snapchat is. An app I guess? I've never owned a smartphone. I've actually only touched one for about a total of an hour in my life. And a major part of my job is to make websites work on smartphones...  ???

Snapchat is how your bet friends finally manage to shamelessly send you pictures of their lunch and their last nail job or their morning sleepy faces. Because the photos they send are suppressed from your phone in a matter of seconds. It's a 007 auto destructive note.
The app became famous for its obvious use in sexting... I must admit while I never used Vine or Instagram, I have snapchat... Never went past the nail polish pics tho  :'(

Snapchat is how your bet friends finally manage to shamelessly send you pictures of their lunch and their last nail job or their morning sleepy faces. Because the photos they send are suppressed from your phone in a matter of seconds. It's a 007 auto destructive note.
The app became famous for its obvious use in sexting... I must admit while I never used Vine or Instagram, I have snapchat... Never went past the nail polish pics tho  :'(

Fantasy Faction is a bit like a dream/nightmare (delete as applicable), you might remember the details but have no fucking clue how you got there.

In other words I don't recall. :p Probably from an article posted on twitter.

I lied, I lied. :-[  Just went back to find my first posts and discovered I actually found Fantasy Faction on Twitter. The rest is true.

But I also discovered I voted for a couple of other Writing Contests ages ago and had forgotten but I'm not going to change my stats because they were for people who've disappeared.

I'm not sure I posted in this thread before.

I spend a lot of time in the independent gaming scene (I can't program, compose or draw, so it was mostly being a fanboy, beta testing and translating games and managing forums for some game devs).

One day I woke up and noticed that I was spending most of my time with something I could only consume and not with something where I could be creative myself (reading/writing fantasy). I was networking in a dead end (career-wise).

So I googled writing (fantasy) forums and this was one of the three I registered and the only one I stayed. :)

One day, while wondering how I would ever get traction on getting my novel completed and then published, I happened upon a grand idea one day and looked through Facebook's various groups for those with a writing bent. I promptly joined four, including Fantasy Faction's.

I wanted to begin nudging my nose into the industry and thought connecting with writers and readers would be helpful. I also wanted to get a feel for the genre's health - what's in vogue, what's hot, what's not, etc. I love fantasy and have loved it for 45 years (since I read the Hobbit at age 5), but I am behind the times. Yes, I turn 50 in March.

My Facebook experiences were mixed - I departed two groups almost immediately. They were just various authors randomly screeching advertisements for their work. Worse, their work was terrible. I immediately liked the Fantasy Faction FB group. Almost right away I got some great ideas, which was what I was after in the first place. In particular, feedback from my question "What tropes/conventions do you hate the most?" was extraordinarily good for me - tipping me to expand X, reduce or change Y, and eliminate Z altogether.

For example, I knew I wanted to craft a book with good, rounded female characters who did more than give the hero someone to pursue, rescue, etc.. I wanted to model a character from a good female friend, whose friendship and advice were tremendously important to me in the military. Importantly, I wanted to present what a male-female friendship looks like, without neither romance nor its cousins (un-pursued longing, etc.). What I didn't know until Fantasy-Faction, was that readers want to read that. I literally worried people might not be interested in a m-f friendship with neither sex nor dreamy-eyed staring, and the feedback indicated that, surprisingly to me, people are interested in that, very much. Like most good advice, much of it I knew all along - I just needed an outside voice to point it out. And I got it.

So, I found the forum, and here I sit. My time here has helped me on several levels, within and beyond my novel.  I just discovered the main website by clicking on the dragon today and was blown away. I didn't realize how many of my favorite authors are affiliated with this clan of fantasy writer-reader-warrior-poets. If I had, well, perhaps I'd have put on a tie :)

Anyway, that's how I ended up here.

He's stopped posting there too, but yeah was a Hobby fan. I was contemplating writing a bit and he recommended this site.
