How did you Choose your Nickname?
« on: January 28, 2011, 09:37:37 PM »
I always wonder how people decide to identify themselves with a nick name, so I thought Id start a thread about it

I came up with Bryndled about 10 years ago

My name is Brandy 1650s, abbreviation of brandywine  (1620s) from Du. brandewijn  "burnt wine," so called because it is distilled (cf. Ger. cognate Branntwein  and Czech palenka  "brandy," from paliti  "to burn").

Brindled "marked with streaks, streaked with a dark color," 1670s, from M.E. brended  (early 15c.), from bren  "brown color" (13c.), noun made from pp. of brennen  "burn," perhaps meaning "marked as though by branding or burning." Form altered perhaps by influence of kindled

Brin the main Protagonist in Wishsong of Shannara was the first fantasy female I really had empathy for so she always has a specially place in my fantasy world.

So I took all that shook it around and made me who I am today.

Who are you?

Autumn2May is based off my favorite folk song Autumn To May by Peter, Paul & Mary.  My dad used to sing it to me and play it on his guitar when I was little, and now I sing it to my kids at their bedtime. :)  I love the lyrics and the tune is beautiful as well.

Oh once I had a little dog, his color it was brown
I taught him for to whistle, to sing and dance and run
His legs they were fourteen yards long, his ears so very wide
Around the world in half a day, upon him I could ride.

Sing Tarry-O Day, Sing, Autumn to May.

Oh once I had a little frog, he wore a vest of red
He'd lean upon his silver cane, a top hat on his head
He'd speak of far off places, of things to see and do,
Of all the Kings and Queens he'd met while sailing in a shoe.

Sing Tarry-O Day, Sing, Autumn to May.

Oh once I had a flock of sheep, they grazed upon a feather
I'd keep them in a music box from wind or rainy weather
And every day the sun would shine, they'd fly all through the town
To bring me back some golden rings, candy by the pound.

Sing Tarry-O Day, Sing, Autumn to May.

Oh once I had a downey swan, she was so very frail
She sat upon an oyster shell and hatched me out a snail
The snail had changed into a bird, the bird to butterfly
And he who tells a bigger tale would have to tell a lie.

Sing Tarry-O Day, Sing, Autumn to May.

I'm Autumn2May because back when AOL first came out (yes back in the dark ages) AutumnToMay was one character to long for a screenname, so had to replace To with 2.  I use this screenname pretty much everywhere and it's the name of my craft business as well. :)

If you'd like to take a listen, here's a version of it on youtube. :)

Ok where to start.
I started writing on a fantasy series and there I used the name Blodeuedd, because she was told to be really beautiful, but wicked too. A good fit for the character

Then one day I wanted to become member of this LOTR forum TORC, well all the Lotr names were taken, and WOT names, so I thought why not and used Blodeuedd. It sounded like it could fit. Then some time later I moved on to another forum and kept the name, in case someone from TORC was there..and so on. I just kept the name so people would recognize me online and no I can't let go of it

Mine's far more shallow than that. ;D I like scarecrows, and it sounds kind of like an awesome embarrassing  dance move. It made me smile, so I went with it.
I am NOT short. I'm further away than I look.

Well, way back about 1985 I was playing a game called Trade Wars 2002 online. Yes, you could get online back that far, on what was called a BBS. I was using a different name on every BBS I was playing the game on. One of the BBS operators who knew I was a computer programmer, asked me if I could modify the game, and after a bit of heavy thinking, I came up with a program called The Mad Hatter's TW2002 Universe Expander (warning - link takes you to a zipped copy of the program).

Since I was selling the program, I had to stick with one name. Marketing, right? I've been called The Mad Hatter ever since. A lot of geeks, politicians, and journalists know who The Mad Hatter is. I sometimes get quoted by publications like Techeye.

So I'm stuck with the name now.

Thats a very nice topic, i also wondered very often how you choose your names.

Mine is also very simple explained:
Frankie comes from my normal name Franziska, a schoolmate liked to call me so.
And Hunter is just the english translation of my surname.

thats it!

For reasons lost in the mists of time Noona was what my friends at school called me, and it kind of stuck (they still call me that today) - it seemed like a good idea for it to be my internet nickname too so I'm now Noona to most people :P

Rhevian comes from a character I played in a role-playing game - from the city of Rhevia. This was an alternate history set in ancient Britain, which had been settled by the Carthaginians rather than the Romans. Rhevia was the name for Cambridge (where I live) as one ancient name for the river Cam is the river Rhee.
