Your Top 10 List of 2017
« on: January 01, 2018, 08:41:21 PM »
We had a 2016 topic too, so here's the 2017 version! No restrictions of genre or release year. Except for the first, they are in chronological order.

1. The Chronicles of the Black Company series (10 books) by Glen Cook.
2. Wolf Winter by Cecilia Ëckback.
3. Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer.
4. Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie.
5. Red Rising trilogy by Pierce Brown.
6. Genesis by Bernard Beckett.
7. The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin.
8. The Chronicles of the Black Gate series (5 books) by Phil Tucker.

Yes, I couldn't decide in two more, even from some 5* stars, that I absolutely found fantastic in the moment but didn't feel I should include here.

So here's three more to compensate, from non SF/F:

1. The Collector by John Fowles.
2. A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.
3. The End of Sparta: A Novel by Victor Davis Hanson.

And five non-fiction!

1. Venice: A New History by Thomas F. Madden and City of Fortune: How Venice Ruled the Seas by Roger Crowley (well, they're about the same thing!)
2. Daybreak: Thoughts on the Prejudices of Morality by Friedrich Nietzsche.
3. Politics by Aristotle
4. The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell.
5. Beyond the Northlands: Viking Voyages and the Old Norse Sagas by Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough.

Your turn!
Slow and steady wins the race.

My five-star books read in 2017 are:
  • Two NK Jemisins - The Obelisk Gate and The Stone Sky
  • Two Rivers of London comic collections - Night Witch and Black Mould
  • Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton
  • The Tiger's Daughter by K Arsenault Rivera
  • City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett
  • Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
  • Psynode by Marlee Jane Ward

And that's actually it for fiction. I don't even get to ten, and two of those were graphic novels. I've tons of four-star books, but I was really picky about my five stars this year apparently. And looking at the quality of those five-starrers, I can't blame myself. There are great books--and lots of my four-starrers are great books, like Claire North's works, or The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, or Django Wexler, or VE Schwab--and then there's a cut above.

Five-star non-fiction:
  • The Silk Road (A very short introduction) by James A Millward
  • The Edge of the World by Michael Pye

I had a top 7 this year (it's been posted at purpledovehouse.blogspot.com), but I'll list it here. This is in no particular order, I've never given stars, and I'm not on goodreads.

Heartless - Marissa Meyer
Frogkisser! - Garth Nix
Kings of the Wyld - Nicholas Eames
Down Among the Sticks and Bones - Seanan McGuire
The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter - Theodora Goss
River of Teeth - Sarah Gailey
My Best Friend's Exorcism - Grady Hendrix

I'm currently rereading River of Teeth, because I got the sequel Taste of Marrow as a Christmas present from @Lejays17. They're both novellas so no chore to read.
I will expand your TBR pile.

And while you're here, you can also go vote in the Reddit Fantasy Stabby Awards :D

https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/7nrh0s/official_voting_for_the_rfantasy_best_of_2017/

The best thing on this one is that we can vote for everything we like, it's not just one vote per category.
There were many categories where I didn't vote, not having read anything there...

... and we can vote for Fantasy Faction 8)

You guys are reading beasts! So many books on other lists I don't know  ;) and a lot already on my TBR. I have so much work to do  :P

I only read 24 books in 2017, because I spent more time writing than reading in 2017, so not many to choose from. I also only gave 3 books a 5 star rating. But I'm pretty tough with my ratings. The first 3 books on my list are the ones I rated 5 stars, and the rest are the books that I would definitely reread. That's why I couldn't make it to 10.

1. The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender
2. The Heart of Betrayal
3. Cybele's Secret
4. A Court of Thorns and Roses
5. The Kiss of Deception
6. The Beauty of Darkness
7. A Court of Mist and Fury
