« on: September 17, 2017, 11:12:20 AM »
Hey guys,

Angry Robot have just announced that they're holding an open submissions period again this year, from 1st November through 31st December. Keep an eye on their Twitter feed and website as they will put up more details next week.

They also have a Youtube announcement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsRn2QjJbVM

I considered it, but I don't have anything that's polished enough (or even finished) to throw into the ring this year. Pretty much focused on Loose Circuit and Supremacy's Shadow at this point. Hopefully, the *next* time the submission window opens up (2019, maybe?) I'll have something else ready to go.

My novel isn't anywhere near polished enough to submit yet but there's a lot of things in their FAQ that make me hesitate even when 2019 rolls around...

"We publish books for an adult readership.... no young adult."
"Humorous books will struggle."

I've got a grim-lite high fantasy about a teenage thief with black comedy regularly mixed in.

(I'm guessing my best bet, if I ever get it polished, would be Pyr or Tor, tho the chances of getting picked up are so slim I feel ballsy even considering the possibility!)

Doood, you've got ellipses in your url. Whoa.

It's disheartening to me when publishers and agents want new, new, new and underrepresented, marginalized. I don't at all object. It's just that I work very hard at making solid, mainstream fantasy. The post helps; I'll still submit, but I'll do so understanding that they probably aren't looking for my kind of story.

*waves hand*
No idea of what you are on about. Ahem. (fixed)

Nah, they just make a point of saying they are welcoming and wanting to see it. Solid mainstream fantasy sells more, so if you have the goods they will want that too.

Iirc, Angry Robot started as... Harper's? experimental imprint. They've got independent since, but that's still their trademark. Don't take Angry Robot's field of interest as being the industry's.

No worries. I'm still going to submit. Brick walls are a kind of specialty with me. *thunk*
