I quite enjoyed Malice at the time, gave it 5* rating, but that was way back. The next books in the series are not on audible and I haven't followed up yet. It is hard to be sure how a series works out until you have read all three, though in retrospect I do agree with Nora that the women were less than impressive in this first book.

OTOH some epic series such as Michael J Sullivan's new Legends of the First Empire leave me "can't wait for the next one".  @ScarletBea think you will enjoy these, they are choc full of interesting characters, with some extremely powerful women among them.

Currently still struggling with The Scar and getting distracted by lighter reading or comforting re-reads in between, because this world is so consistently awful.

ETA Started Ancilliary Justice months back and got bored with whatever it is carting whoever it is all around wherever it is. Maybe I'll finish one day. :P

I am reading Red Sister by Mark Lawrence.  After reading a couple books from the Broken Empire series and absolutely flipping out over them because of the brilliant writing style, I eagerly grabbed this new series of his.   But Red Sister is leaving me perplexed.  It is like it could have been written by a completely different person.
The style is so different, it is as if Lawrence is writing YA  -- I had to double check to see if it really was adult fiction.  I also thought maybe it was a series he wrote long before Broken Empire, because the writing style seems way less sophisticated.  But Red was published in 2017.  Erk.  What happened?  After the incredibly sleek and almost poetic writing style of the Broken Empire series, Red Sister seems strangely pedestrian in its style and some of the characters (like the high priest) are walking cliches.  And the Harry Potter vibe is kinda disappointing because it is rather unoriginal, and Lawrence was always so great at doing original.  I am still having fun reading the book, though, and I love the heroine.  I guess it is a tribute to the author if he can pull off such weirdly different writing styles so as to seem like it was written by a different person.

Saw in Twitter and Reddit a post with "Harry Potter and..." where you complete with the book you're currently reading (since all HP titles are "HP and".

Mine became Harry Potter and Red Rising.

The oppression of the born wizard against the muggles of Mars. A muggle named Darrow is magically rebuilt to become a wizard, infiltrate Hogwarts of Mars and kill Harry. But he falls in love with his daughter.
Slow and steady wins the race.

I love Cinema Sins.  Recently watched Casino Royale and Face: Off done on cinema sins, both films I loved and still found it hilarious.  (Though has been a while since I watched Face: Off - possibly not since it first came out as a film to rent (remember film rentals?!) )

I am reading children's novels at the moment.  Have done Mars Evacuees, Odd and the Frost Giants, Cakes in Space and now onto Red Pyramid by Rick Riordin.  All been great fun, and puts me in a good place to recommend books in my day job.  Anyone want a recommendation for a novel for a child or niece/ nephew?  (@Arry?)  I am the person to speak to.

"Harry Potter and the Crimson Campaign"

An election for Hogwarts student government goes horribly astray leading to a bloody vote-off during lunch period. A magical water pistol battle becomes forever remembered as the Red Wetting.

I finished Fortress in the Eye of Time by CJ Cherryh at the weekend. It was pretty good, but kind of slow.

I'm reading Death Comes as the End by Agatha Christie right now - a bit of a departure for her, since it's set in ancient Egypt - and then I'm going on to either Red Sister by Mark Lawrence or Between Two Thorns by Emma Newman.

Best to make this Malice discussion in a new topic.

I'm off to read  A Natural History of Dragons (The Memoirs of Lady Trent #1) by Marie Brennan

I'm not sure if  this is going to be for me. Really hope I enjoy it!

Some posts I left here if they also mentioned what they were reading, particularly if they were quoted in another reply that I moved to the new thread. Sorry if any wound up in the wrong place. Not on a computer, so the interface is even wonkier, may have missed some

I just finished Beyond Redemption and I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, it was fun, gloriously dark, and really inventive in terms of worldbuilding. But on the other, I found it quite slow going. Plot wise it was nothing special, with a fair bit of rambling around, and a lot of the characters seemed to serve little purpose. Still, it was an interesting read. It seems book 2 is self published, so could be a while before I pick up a copy, but I hope to get around to it eventually.

I'm on chapter 12 of Crimson Queen.  So far, I'm loving the world building and beautiful prose.

I went for The Islanders by Christopher Priest. Those other two are still down to be my next fantasy books, but I decided to reorder the queue a bit at the last minute. I've only managed the first few pages of The Islanders, but it looks like it might be structured as a guide book, which could make it a tricky read. I'm reading it as part of my ongoing project to read all of the BSFA award winners.

Yes, there will be a plot developing soon. The first book has a lot of "setting the scene".

finished Gideon Smith and The mechanical Girl a fairly Lighthearted romp with a huge body count and a penny dreadful steampunk setting.
