General Discussion / Pod Pals Project
« on: April 23, 2017, 03:50:59 PM »
Hey guys!
If any of you watch my Twitter, then you may know what's going on. But either way, I wanted to ask for your support.
Me and my friends have managed an online radio station for 4 years, and I've had an online show for 5. However, back in the middle of March, we decided to take our shows in a new direction.
Radio is dying. We've always known that, but we didn't know what we could do as an alternative. And honestly, we had a pretty good set up. Sometimes, stagnation is nice. You don't have to take a leap and risk hitting the ground. But life has forced us to try something new, and we all agree it's for the better.
We're transitioning over to podcasts. Our shows have been in more of a podcast form, just live. Now, we're going to allow anyone to join the recording if they want, which has never been a huge problem in the past, and we're going to post our podcasts on Soundcloud. We're working on developing a website for all of our information, paying for Soundcloud pro, purchasing a server so we can host random streams and a TeamTalk server, and several other things. If we successfully get all of this running, we know it's going to be a huge success.
There are two things you can do to support us. the first one is simple. Find us on social media. We have a twitter, @podpals1. We have a Facebook page. We just started a YouTube channel, so we're still putting things together and making it look nicer, but we're there. Subscribe, like, follow, share... All of that stuff. It helps us out a lot.
The second is almost just as easy. We're taking PayPal donations. Even if it's just a dollar, it goes toward our project. If you have the money, we would greatly appreciate it. http://paypal.me/podpals
I'll post updates on this page as well, for anyone interested. We're going to be looking for web designers and someone whose good at coming up with cool logos and the like, so I'll post that here when we're ready. Depending on how things go, there will be a little bit of money involved for anyone interested in that. And of course, when we're up and running, I'll post links here.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Even if the name is just floating around in your head, that could help us in the future. You're supporting us by making it all the way to the end of this post, and I appreciate your indulgence.

Hey guys! So as the title suggests, there is an RPG for PC being made with a focus on blind gamers, but graphics are included to make the game accessible for everyone else as well. Right now, I imagine the graphics aren't the best, but they work to get the message across. However, if you're willing to donate to this wonderful project, they promise to make sure the graphics become better than than the bare minimum!

I'm really hoping this project goes through. It would be amazing to have a popular game that both sighted and blind people can enjoy. Please support this project, even if it's only 10 dollars.

I'm excited, and scared at the same time. I don't think It's good for Stormlight to have a book deal this early in the series, nor do I think it will do well as a movie. However, with the amount of money that's being poured into this... How bad can it be?

Thoughts?

Okay, I've been staying silent for a long time about this, but now I'm starting to get extremely annoyed.

Over on the main website, we've had several reviews recently posted with a warning similar to the following. "This review contains spoilers. Read with caution if you have yet to finish the book." Of course, this is not limited to our beloved place of gathering. People on Goodreads do it too, even though most of the time the spoilers are hidden.
Here's my issue. Most of the time, if I'm reading a book review, I've never heard of the book before. I want to know the general premise, followed by things the reviewer liked and disliked. I am not, however, looking to read someone's thoughts on the entire storyline of the book who I don't know, unless I'm in a thread or some form of conversation dedicated to discussing spoilers. On YouTube, reviewers handle this a couple of ways. They post one review without spoilers, and one with spoilers. So, if we're going to have reviews with spoilers in them, can we please have another equally well done review without them?

I really wanted to read the review of Suicide Squad. I couldn't because of spoilers. I really wanted to read the review of Force Awakens before I saw it. Same issue. I really would've loved to have read the series review of Dagger and the Coin. Same issue. Then I've read reviews without the spoiler warning that have told the entire story. Everyone wants to discuss whatever form of entertainment they're hooked on. That's why they make special places where you can go to talk about all the plot holes and amazing spoilery moments and all of that. Reviews are not the place when there is no alternative article for those who have not experienced whatever is being reviewed.
Please note that I am not targeting any particular reviewer. I hardly ever pay attention to who the review is written by. Feel free to discuss everything below.

Fantasy Movies, Comic Books & Video Games / X-Men Apocolypse
« on: May 31, 2016, 05:10:48 AM »
I'm surprised this doesn't exist yet, so here it is! Talk about everything X-Men Apocolypse below. I encourage people to put what they thought of the movie out of spoilers to help those who are still making decision, and to get into serious discussions in spoilers. I will do this below.

This movie was way better than I expected. I knew it would be an awesome showdown because, Apocolypse, but I didn't expect anything to be fantastic beyond the action scenes. What happened was completely different. First, the storyline really had some heart to it. All the characters felt real, the majority of the motivations felt real, and the majority of the action scenes had a dramatic punch to them. The timeline adds more to the intensity of everything. Because of Days of Futures Past, the timeline has almost been reset. Sure, some things will still turn out like they're supposed to, but the entire time there's a sense that others will change. For example, Angel. It just made the movie even more fun than it already was, and moments hit hard. What else adds to the epicness of this film? Quicksilver. Enough said.

Some spoiler thoughts.
Spoiler for Hiden:
What the hell did that end credit scene mean? I didn't get it. Also, will the next Wolverine movie tie him back to X-Men?

I loved the way they connected Jean and Wolverine in a very subtle way. I'm not sure if he will fully remember her, but it will explain his future love interest.

Magneto's story was interesting. I expected him to be allied with the X-Men the entire time, but I guess not. Still, his motivations mostly made sense in the end. He's always been a little unhinged, so it doesn't have to be completely logical.

I loved what they did with Storm. I had no idea how she came to be one of the X-Men, so that plotline fascinated me. I'm not sure if it goes that way in the comics at all, but it worked.

Is it just me, or was the mansion rebuilt really fast? I'm sorry, but even with all of your powers, there's no way you can do that.

Why the hell didn't Quicksilver tell Erick? Someone's going to tell him in a future film, and he'll look around and realize no one is surprised. "You knew?" "Yep. Everyone knew but you." What the hell!"

Poor Alex! I didn't think he was around for the original trilogy, but I was hoping that would be an awesome change. Guess not. :(

Can we just get a Quicksilver movie? Sure, maybe throw someone else in there to balance him out, but that would be awesome. Hell, what about Quicksilver and Deadpool? That would be hilarious!

Think I got all of my thoughts out of my head for now. Feel free to comment and all that lovely stuff below!

General Discussion / Did Your Parents Read To You As a Child?
« on: May 26, 2016, 07:42:17 PM »
I'm doing this poll to see how many readers are affected by their parents reading to them when they are younger. I've asked this question directly, but never put it in poll form. So feel free to select your choice and discuss!

Note: Selecting yes or no does not mean you support either side of the question. That's for discussing in the comments. The poll is mere data.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Light Bringer Series News!
« on: May 12, 2016, 04:16:37 AM »
http://www.brentweeks.com/2016/05/the-blood-mirror-release-date/

When I saw the title of this post, I screamed. Out Loud. I completely fangirled for two seconds. Ugh.

If you don't feel like clicking on it, here's two things. Blood Mirror is supposed to come out on October 25th. However, it's not the end of the series. There's going to be a book 5 now.

I'm really excited about this! First, I love the Light Bringer world to death. The magic system is awesome, the government is awesome, the plot has me on the edge of my seat the entire time... Maybe I should be upset about this series continuing to extend, but I'm not. I think Weeks proved himself trustworthy when The Broken Eye didn't drag out and be boring. If he feels like he needs to continue the story, then that means we have lots of epic things to come.

What do you guys think?

Edit: Just read the first two chapters of Blood Mirror. My jaw already dropped twice, and I was on the edge of my seat. This is going to be good!

Spoilers! Spoilers all around!

So let's talk about episode one, since there's not a thread for it yet for some reason.

First, the Red Woman walks into the room with Jon, says she thought she saw him fighting at Winterfell in the flames, and then walks out. What? This is not how it went in my head! That's the moment when you're supposed to resurrect him! We're not done with him yet though. he has to come back. I won't accept he's gone until I see him burning in the flames.

Cersei gives a accurate speech about her own character? Since when does she start realizing her own character flaws? She should be screaming, yelling, angry, anything but introspective. It just seems too sudden of a change for me.

Someone burned Daenerys ships. That sucks. So we're not getting to Westeros any time soon?

Daenerys is going to live with all the old women forever! Interesting. Where is her dragon at this point?

The snakes killed the Prince of Dorne and Tristain. Oh well. Where's the other guy that went down to Merene in the books? Does he not exist yet?

Sansa is under Brienne's protection. That's good I think. Now they go looking for Arya?

Arya is being taught how to be Daredevil. That had to hurt.

And The Red Woman is really, really old. Weird.

I think that's a fair list. Not all my favorites made it as high as I would've liked, but that's to be expected I guess. Thoughts?

General Discussion / Photos
« on: April 03, 2016, 04:51:56 AM »
Hey guys!
First, I'm going to apologize for this post ahead of time. I'm hesitant to say something in the first place out of fear of bothering anyone, but I thought I would at least ask.
Recently, there have been a lot of posts with photos. Just looking through FF now, there was someone who mainly communicated with visuals, and I had no idea what was going on. Before I've just shrugged it off. Pictures aren't apart of my life. There have been few times I've asked random people to describe things to me, but I don't care most of the time.
However, it seems that on here, the amount of pictures has skyrocketed during this past week. Is there anyway that, if you post a picture, you can put a brief description above or below it? It could be something as simple as a caption like, "this was my very first, 1970 model car thing." That's details. Granted, more description is better than less, but I'm perfectly happy with the minimum. Or perhaps, if you see a picture that wasn't described by the poster, you could quote it and put a little caption next to it.
I don't want to pressure anyone into taking up their time. I know a lot of us post from work, school, etc. I'm also not asking anyone to dredge up every single photo before this post and describe them. I don't need that much information. I'm just asking this to be taken into your consideration when posting photos. I know of other blind people who lurk around the threads, reading but never posting. This could help welcome them as well as other blind people in the future to the community.
If you do not feel like captioning or describing, that is perfectly fine. I don't want anyone to do something they're not comfortable with doing. I also don't want this to become a big deal, hence why I was hesitant to say something in the first place.
I am grateful that I have been accepted into the community with open arms, and love that everyone tolerates my craziness. And I greatly respect and enjoy everyone here. The fact that blindness has not changed the opinion of FF means a tremendous amount. I hope this request does not seem like a cry for attention or a... Well, something else that it isn't. I'm just doing my best to help me and other blind people better participate in the conversation.
Also, I apologize for what must seem like a ramble. Like I said, I hate bothering people about this sort of thing, and do my best to avoid it by coming up with other solutions. I am sorry if this interrupts the flow of the humor-filled and deep discussion discussion we have around here.

General Discussion / Once a ****, always a ****
« on: February 02, 2016, 10:01:30 PM »
While eating lunch with friends, we had a heated discussion. It started by one of them saying the phrase, "Once a cheater, always a cheater."
On one side of the discussion, you have the group saying this is true. People don't change. Once a criminal, always a criminal. That type of thing. On the other, you have the group saying that redemption is possible, and that life should be about second chances.
I'm curious where all of you stand on this issue. Most have more life experience than the entire group combined. And we've all lived different lives, and had different experiences. So is it true? Do people change, or remain static in their behavior? Will a thief continue stealing cars after he's been caught? Will a man or woman continue cheating on their future partners after they've lost one good relationship? Is it possible to break the pattern of bad behavior, and to learn from your mistakes? How often is the cycle successfully broken?
I'll give my view of things later on.

Writers' Corner / Writers Object To Film Adaptations
« on: January 21, 2016, 03:26:44 AM »
Today I started wondering why more authors didn't speak out against a terrible film adaptation. Yes, I get that they make a ton of money and get much more exposure for it. But, as an artist, how can you not feel violated when someone else takes your work and completely messes it up, ignoring suggestions you make along the way?
Me? I would tell all my fans from the moment I saw it to not go to the theater and see it. I would inform them how the vision of my work was lost, and it will only bring about a ton of misconceptions about the book series. I would go to the highest mountain, scream it to the rooftops, everything I could. But not many writers have done this. So few, in fact, that when I googled it, I found articles like, "10 authors who rejected their film adaptation." Only ten? Now, those 10 who rejected them were very passionate. The one that stuck in my mind was Stephen King's The Shining, but there was some other guy who refused to accept any money from his adaptation's success. That's passion, and that's exactly something I would do.
Which brings up the question. Why don't others do it? Is it because they sign some contract saying they can't speak out against it? Is it because they're so low on money, they have no choice? Is it because they just want to get famous? So, I bring this question to you dedicated people out there who would love to be a professional writer one day. If your book was adapted into a screenplay, and by the end of the project you still hated it, would you speak out against it? Even if you did sign a contract, would you inform all of your fans and the news how terrible this movie/TV show is compared to the book, and that you never would've signed on if you had known it would be so terrible?

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Peter V. Brett's The Core Chapter 1
« on: December 22, 2015, 11:14:59 PM »
For those that don't know, Peter V Brett is the author of The Demon Cycle. the Core is the fifth and final release of the series. He just posted chapter 1 today. I think it's obvious, but spoilers if you're not caught up with the series.
http://www.petervbrett.com/excisions/core-chapter-1-both/

If you've finished reading at this point, your jaw has probably dropped like mine did. There is no way in hell I saw that coming. But uh... Does it make sense? Is this actually useful to the plot, or is he just trying to make a political statement? Just... Why?
Feel free to comment below! The Core won't come out until 2017, so we have a lot of time to try and speculate.

General Discussion / Free Anti-virus Programs
« on: December 08, 2015, 10:38:48 PM »
You guys all seem like a smart bunch. So any good anti-virus programs out there that are free?
At first, I had Microsoft Security Essentials, but that project flatlined and became useless. for a while now, I've had AVG, but it seems to be failing now.
I don't know where to go next.

Does anyone understand how this stuff works? I've can't remember any explanations in all three books, and I haven't found any questions about it online that he's answered. I even tried asking his Goodreads group, but it sucks in comparison with other authors.
