Water

Most na Soci, Slovenia by Brian W. Lackey

This month we want stories, where water of any kind is a key element. Doesn't matter if it's a stormy sea, a misty lake, a polluted river, a frozen waterfall, a terrible flash flood, or a sentient geyser - water is incredibly diverse and we expect the stories to mirror this. :)

Rules:

1. This must be prose or poetry.
2. Water of any kind must play a big role in the story.
3. Prose must be 500-1500 words long.
4. Poetry must be 100-750 words long.
5. One story per person or writing team (not per account).
6. You will be disqualified if you exceed the limits, full stop. That's why they're called limits.
7. Your entry can't be published somewhere else before.
8. This is a writing contest, not a "I have written something like this ten years ago" contest. So if you happen to have a story that fits one of the themes, I'd like it to have a mayor overhaul/edit. Work for it. ;)
9. Please add your story's word count and, if you have, your twitter handle.
10. Please put your story in [ spoiler ] tags to make the thread easier to handle. :) You can find them above the smileys under the B.

If you want so submit your story anonymously you can do so by sending it in a personal message to @xiagan.

Entry will close November 30th/December 1st, 2017 and voting will begin somewhere around the same time too.

All members are eligible to join. If you are not a member you can join here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/register/). Sign up is free and all are welcome! :)

The winner will have their piece displayed on the main Fantasy Faction website sometime in the next months.
Submitting a story counts as published. The author retains all rights to their work.

Please post your entry here (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?topic=11030.new#new).

Note: This thread is only for questions or discussing this month's writing contest. Good luck!

I find it funny (humorous) that the topic of this month's writing contest is water since it's November and any water is usually frozen where it gets cold enough lol

The rules here are pretty generous, I do believe you could write with Ice as well if you want. Ice is water and also has water way down underneath. ;D

What do you think @ScarletBea? Don't want to bother Xia with little internet.

And Lady Ty, if it's got water, it's allowed. Are those wiggly things made of water or just juice? ;)

I love how my first thought after seeing the image and the bodies of water examples is basically "welp, time to go out into the desert." I've already got a few hundred words do with my idea, though must of it's just fluff to shave off later.

As part of an insomnia-evasion plan, I daydreamed about this story idea for a good 45 minutes last night as I drifted off. I think it will work well, especially for people who like subterranean dwarf kingdoms :)

My submission is in. 666 words. :) The hardest part of these challenges are their brevity so I have to watch the word count as I work. When I read the title of the challenge I thought of a tropical island. Then I saw the picture and I had to use both. I liked the mood of the picture so I decided to try and echo it.

A poem to inspire you all:

Water
is wet
like a bathtub
but more
because it's just the water
which is the wet part.
Water.

Here is another one in non-haiku form.

Water
drink it if you're thirsty
It's good

and here's a more historical fanastical like one

And behold!
There was water!
Bringer of life!
Quencher of all thirsts!
Mother of the aquatic!
And upon thine clothes it doth be wet!
And so it be decreed that water shalt not be split, but drank in the quantity of at least 8 chalices a day.
So sayeth the author of this poem.

Bradley, thou hast indeed inspired me.

So I present a sonnet with love and water throughout.

In pools I have swum, while lakes I have crossed,
Thin ice I have shattered as I swam through.
In springs I have bathed and oceans have tossed.
My greatest love, my Water, it is you.

But now like ice I canst not melt thy frown,
My humor and jest do leave thee colder.
My waves of entreaty are all now turned down.
Where surf crashed now moss grows and love molders.

All wet, no sparks light, no joy bursts to life,
Like a cold bog in the night I'm lonely,
Yet my love like a spring ignores all strife,
I drink, Water, and wine to thee only.

7 notions so far... and I bet I get 5 more on the way in to work.
I’d put them in a poll, but that’s not really in keeping with the spirit of the contest.  8)

P.s. make that 8 notions.

Got home from an extended weekend vacation for my sister's birthday last night. We spent some time at Niagara Falls and now I have some ideas to try out for this month or just in general.

My mom laughed at the coincidence when I mention what this month's theme was.

Second would be cool, first not so much, since it is a writing contest. ;)

For a while it was hip to open your story with an illustrative image, like a cover picture, to give the mood... I also once joined a hand drawn illustration of a character, after the story, in another spoiler tag, and no one ever mentioned this being a bad thing, quite the contrary. I think it's a matter of it being complimentary and non essential. If your story can't be fully enjoyed without the picture (like you describing very little because we could see what you speak about) then it'll surely play against you.

Mind you though, I've never seen anyone include more than one, so maybe send your story to @xiagan by pm first, if you're using many? He's the boss, he'll tell you if you're beyond the rules of the contest.

Ugh I wrote a story but it's not fantasy.

“It came on the water,” Papa Imani said, “and with his water we are saved.”  Imani dunked the old man in a tub.
Half of the congregation wasn’t paying attention—if they could be called a congregation.  Some stared at the boarded up windows as if they could see outside.  Others clustered in corners, eating snacks or playing cards.
Asha didn’t blame them. She believed in the Lord—that’s why she was saved, of course—but most people in the room hadn’t asked to be there. Papa Imani never seemed to stop preaching, every waking word he said was about the Glory of God, how he protected them in this holy place.  But “congregation” was his word.  Most people here called themselves “refugees.”
Asha whispered a prayer, thanking the Lord once again.  Her father had thought her foolish, coming to church. Believing.  But now she was saved and he… Asha brushed a tear from her face.
Outside the streets were lined with corpses, dried blood running in lines from eyes, noses and mouths.  It had only taken a day for the rats, the carrion birds, and the insects to come.
   It came on the water.
Poto-Poto was struck first.  God’s wrath took the whole village, then came downstream for Asha’s people. But they had heard the stories, and the believers locked themselves in the church while the world around them died. They shared what food they had saved, peed and shit in buckets, and pitched it out the window of Pap Imani’s office in the back of the church.  It had been 2 days.
Noah had endured much longer, Papa Imani had said.
Asha looked at the tub of baptism water. So much water, blessed by the Lord. With his water we are saved.
People were already preparing to sleep.  Soon it would be night, so quiet in the church that they would be able to hear the moans of the dying outside.
She waited.  Waited until every head lied to rest, until Papa Imani disappeared back into his quarters.  She waited longer still. Till the gentle snores of her neighbors filled the room.
She took her milk jug, dipped it in the Holy Water, and crept to the door. God would understand, wouldn’t he?
Slipping the door open a crack, she crept outside.  She poured half the water over her, “with his water we are saved.” and took a deep breath.  If she only held her breath she wouldn’t smell it.  She tried not to look at the motionless figures on the side of the road, half-eaten bodies twisted in the throes of agony. Rats darted from shadow to shadow, bellies full with the flesh of her neighbors.  She kept her eyes forward, mouth tightly closed, lungs full of air.
The village was small. It only took a minute to arrive at her hut. She let her breath out as she opened the door.
   “Papa?” she whispered.
She saw a dark spot motionless on the bed, but Asha smiled as she heard his deafening snores.  Yes that was her Papa.
She ran to the side of the bed.  His eyes were sealed shut with dried blood, and his pillow red and wet from the foam that had leaked from his mouth.
“Papa,” she said softly, lying her dripping head on his chest.
“Asha,” his voice was raspy and weak. Her papa tried to open his eyes, but they were sealed shut. “No, no, baby. No.”
“Water will save us all, Papa,” She wet a cloth with the Holy Water, and gently washed the blood from his face and eyes. “Thou shalt not steal—it’s a sin of course, but I think God will forgive me.  I stole the Holy Water but he can’t blame me for wanting to save you!”
Papa’s voice caught in his throat, as his daughter threw her wet arms around him once again.  “The water will save us both papa, you’ll see.”
He knew that tomorrow his daughter’s eyes would be red with blood. That in a few days, like him, she would feed the rats.
“With his water we are saved!” Asha whispered as she held him.
He wanted to scream. To tell her to run from this place.  But for now he held her tight and let her have her moment of immortality.
 “Yes, baby. Yes we are.”

@RobertS  thanks man! I'm glad the story didn't completely go to waste, in that folder on my HD where stories go to... be unread.  I'm gonna rename my creative writing folder "Purgatory"

@Lanko Haha maybe every month I should do a Sherlanko story in the discussion thread until I have enough for a book :).  I can always switch out "Asha" for "Lankette".

I usually have that problem but mine was happily wrapped up in like 900 words.  It just had other disqualifying elements.

I've noticed a theme in my short stories: someone or everyone dies and/or there's references to toileting or toilets somehow. Usually both.  My Thanksgiving Ebola story had both!

Hello everyone! My name's Norm.

I was an aspiring author, once upon a time. I used to participate in the SFFWorld forum contests (and perhaps will participate in them again in the future, although that forum seems to have really died down.) Hoping re-ignite the spark by getting involved in this forum's short story contests. I posted an entry into this month's contest, and hopefully you'll be seeing more of me in the month's to come!

OMG. Done.

Pretty pleased with my decision to stick to the journal format, as doing the ending in present tense from a second character's pov was eating away at my word count so fast I could not reasonably wrap it up in 1.5k words.

Thanks for the extra time!

That would be a horrifying topic idea for anyone with any amount of self doubt, so I really hope not!

Whoa, let's keep the depression out of the contest and not ever include any living politicians in the topic (this coming from the resident cannibal-fan).

How about "Hannibal goes to Hogwart"? Or Westworld meets with Jurassic park? Something less stressful? xD
