Title: What is your secondary genre?
Post by: michaelramm on January 11, 2011, 01:54:25 AM
So obviously we are all here because we enjoy reading fantasy. We have preferences for stand alone novels or long fat series. We can argue about social commentary in fantasy.

But to take a break from all that (see I have a point) what are the other genres you really enjoy reading? Are you a military history buff? A biography nut? A closeted romance novel reader? Poetry?

My secondary reading is mainly computer books. I am in information technology and I read a lot of computer books whether it is learning a new skill or trying to keep up to date on my current skill set. My other love is Medieval history, especially the Crusades. You can see a good amount of Crusades books in my GoodReads profile.

Sci-fi for me. :)  Though I think they kind of go together a lot of the time, so I'm not sure if that counts. :)

I am just trying to think of a book I've read in another genre I enjoyed and can't really think of one... I'd probably say Sci-Fi. I used to read Star Trek books (enjoyed them too!) so I guess that is my only real answer for secondary genre.

A closeted romance novel reader?

Lol, no I am a very out there romance reader ;) Love contemporary and historical romance, but I am a woman  ::)

But right now I would say Urban Fantasy is second. Love the action, the worlds, and the tiny bit of romance they put it

I like mountaineering literature, being a climber myself.   ;D

Hmmm, I read a bit of sci-fi, but I'd count SF and Fantasy as largely the same thing. The only other thing I read is some classic stuff like Jules Verne or I'm currently reading Sherlock Holmes on the Kindle.
I quite enjoy historical fantasy/alternate histories, so I think I'd like some historical or historical mystery novels if I ever got around to it.

Sci-Fi even I'd also put them together. As for other books I don't know how to qualify it I started reading Sniper One recently. A great book by Sergeant Dan Mills :) And I don't know what genre it is :/

Though sci-fi should be considered my second genre, I like books that blend sci-fi and fantasy together, so it sort of counts as my first.

My second genre is the crime thriller.  All the better if there is a paranormal twist, or other fantastical elements.  I wouldn't go so far to say it's urban fantasy, because the crime, workings of the police, and the legal system are the focuses, the fantastical elements being secondary.

Hurrah! Another Trek reader *laughs*
Yes, Sci-Fi definitely for me. I'm a BIG fan of Harry Harrison.
Interestingly enough YA is my first genre and Fantasy my third I guess. Though my NY resolution is to knock sci-fi from 2nd to 3rd *grins*

I dont know if paranormal romance is really a secondary genre.
to be more exactly i really like vampire novels (dont shake your head in disgust now please  ;) )
i really enjoyed lara adrians midnight breed series and as her next book comes out in september i've decided to change to "normal" fantasy to shorten the waiting time.
so i found brent weeks and this forum which was not a bad choice ;)

I work as an environmental manager so do a lot of reading around that, especially biodiversity. In fact, as well as my urban fantasy book I am writing a book on biodiversity, demistifying it for non-academics. That one will be published on my website as I write it because I want to get the point out there, it's not so much about me being published!

I have to admit that it is Paranormal Romance.  OK, I know that is a little wierd sounding, but there are some very good books our there under this category.  I also like non-fiction books about the Crusades, the Knights Templar and other mysterious topics.  I'm an avid conspiracy theorist and I love to think "Look out, the sky is falling!" was not invented by Henny Penny, but rather by ancient chickens who mistakenly referred to UFO's as the sky falling because they had no frame of reference for comparison.

I dont really have a secondary genre. I am all fantasy all the time.

#1 epic fantasy
#2 RPG fantasy
#3 Historical fantasy

you get the drift...

I'll agree with you on that. Us guys aren't supposed to like Romances, and I don't like Harlequins, but I like Fantasy Romances (like Robin Owens Lladrana series), Urban Fantasy Romances (On the Edge by Illona Andrews).

It confuses my wife really badly sometimes :)

Maybe you take my view, which is that "Romance" novels are trash, but love stories transcend genre and are a universal human experience, meaning it's OK to read the fantasy and "serious" literary ones. :D

Does "everything else" count as a secondary genre? That's pretty much how I do it. SF&F (which in my own mind includes horror), then all other fiction gets internally classified as "everything else".

Thanks, Mad Hatter.  I needed that vote of confidence. You and Funky Scarecrow make it sound much better.  :)
Title: Definition of Fantasy
Post by: The Mad Hatter on January 28, 2011, 10:50:37 PM

This is from talking to authors at Science Fiction and Fantasy Conventions:

Fantasy Fiction is any fiction which departs from reality.

Nice, simple, and short. This means that Science Fiction is a subsection of Fantasy, as is Horror. Wikipedia disagrees, but I'll go with the writers over Wikipedia any day.

What else do I like to read?

Well people keep on mentioning SF,  Since fantasy and SF are sub genres of each other I don't really count that as separate.  I love Mysteries, some main stream, but I'm really picky.  I love some of the classics.  Oh and romances, sometimes.

Well I like to break up my fantasy reading with some non-fiction stuff - historical biographies or just general history books (commercial ones though - nothing too dense!). After reading one of them, the next fantasy book feels soooo good! I also tend to read follow the fads a bit (Dragon Tattoo, Dan Brown, etc). I read the classics occasionally as well - Sherlock Holmes stuff, Tolstoy, some Dickens, Shakespeare. For the most part, I find that there is a reason they have survived the test of time.

I don't have another category of books that I get hooked on like fantasy though.

Besides fantasy and sci/fi, I read Koontz and stuff like that. I love a good history book. But with so many fantasy books to read, who has time to read anything else right? lol. My room is basicly a small library.

I've overeached my room, and am expanding into my house :D. Small libraries rule

It isn't often that I read something outside of the Fantasy genre. The last one was Random by Craig Robertson (Thriller), and before that (by a couple of years) was probably Velocity by Dean Koontz. So, I suppose my secondary genre would be Thrillers.

This is an interesting topic because fantasy IS my secondary genre.  My first, is children's books.  However, the majority of children's books are fantasy, which works out quite well for me, doesn't it?

I also like historical fiction.  Well, not so much 'historical', more 'tudor'.  Haven't read Wolf Hall yet as I tend to ignore/hate books which are hyped.  Perhaps I'll pick it up sometime.

I like classics - Pride and Prejudice being my all time favourite book (but anything by Jane Austin is great). I'll read pretty much anything, but I like things that aren't set either here or now.
I'll even read text books, if that is all that's available.

Gotta be mysteries for me.  I have a soft spot for detective novels from the first half of the 20th century.  My favorite author of that genre being Raymond Chandler, with Agatha Christie taking a close second.

Mystery for me too.

I See lots of fantasy fans here like historic fiction, wonder how much crossover we get? Does anyone not like historical fiction if a fan of fantasy?

:D I quite like historical fiction. Maybe not so much now, but some years ago I felt that I knew English history much better than I knew Portuguese one, hehe - middle ages period, at least.

Poetry and nonfiction. The kind of poetry I like most, reads like fantasy, and nonfiction's good for learning things.

Scifi and Fantastic for me.

And once in a while (ok make it one or two times a year), a mystery or classical author, just for general knowledge.
