If we had a whole winter that never got colder than -5C I would consider it a pretty good winter.

The cold and the consequences of the environment breed them to be stoic, patient planners - arguably things one never wants in an enemy. And anyone who can shoot you while he is skiing, well screw that.

I got to go to Finland in my early 20's. A very old Finn describes Sisu as the state of mind where skiing at tanks seems like a good idea.

As for the weather
It was  -5 in my porch at 05:45 this morning. Ice on the bike seat and a burst water main between me and work....I am living the dream.

Jury duty was a bust. No one saved, no one punished.  >:(  ;)
They pleaded out before we ever saw the inside of the courtroom.

Which all to the good for getting home before the ice storm and getting back to work.

Yes, @Eli_Freysson, a quaint little ice storm  :P ;) ;D

@Jmack, glad  you didn’t have a 12 Angry Men situation to deal with. Have luckily never been called, but watched ‘Bull’ a few times lately and wonder how I would be assessed with his analysis of jury members

Interested in The Winter Fortress, had no idea about that story. My father spent some time in Norway towards end of war, he had enormous respect and admiration for the Norwegians and what the resistance they had managed under occupation. All I know of what he did there was that it was finding and destroying remote Nazi signals posts and equipment which had been mostly been abandoned when they left Norway.

Prior to that he was in a cell of RAF Signals and had worked in UK  with misdirecting radio signals to interfere w aircraft navigation, later called Battle of  the Beams. I did not know any of this until long after he died in 1970 and am sorry never had chance to talk to him about it. Had uncle in North Africa campaign too, but as was the way back then, the war was never, ever discussed at home after they were demobbed and all our news and information had come from carefully censured newspapers and the BBC. Different times indeed.

@Lady Ty:

I had a history teacher in the mid ‘70s who flew in the first.ying fortress bomber during the War. He would take a model of the plane and “fly” it around the room going “vrooooooom”! The most mild-mannered guy you’d ever meet. We called him Gunner Gus.

My wife’s uncle was with Patton at the end of the war, and helped to free at least one concentration camp. Up to a few years ago, the survivors of his company met for the occasional reunion. Another incredibly mild0mannered guy. (I realize I’ve mentioned him before.)

There’s an allure of the “good war”. Your father’s reticence is only one reminder that no wars are good, even if good can happen in and even, sort of, through them.

Remember a little while back when I was in talks with a Romanian fantasy magazine named Zin? I now have an email from them saying they'll make a final decision in the next few days, but they're about 99% sure they'll publish one of the short stories I sent them.
