eeek! but are you typing outside? ;)

And no, we haven't had proper winter yet! I want some snow days!

Typing upstairs in a Welsh farmhouse. It's pretty much the same thing. ;)

I just want to ask: Is anyone interested in beta-ing my upcoming novel? It's going to be a standalone classic fantasy novel, from the POV of a classic Tolkien-esque elf as they experience the world of humans for the first time. Because I like playing with classic tropes and giving them my own personal spin.

It hit -7 here last night.

Very hard to type with numb fingers.

Can it be Summer now?

Haha it was 44 here last night and I thought I was going to die.
(how much is that in celcius??? Idk).

That's +7 C!!! That's a normal warm-ish temperature for winter, hehe

Say, quick question: Would anyone here buy that a 100 year old cavalry sabre could be taken off a mantelpiece and used as an effective weapon?

Can an old weapon still be effectively used: yup, but it's not very sharp anymore. Still, bludgeoning someone's face with a heavy steel sabre should work. Can confirm from personal experience, dropped it on my toe. :'(

Can it be taken off the mantelpiece: that depends, a lot of ornamental weapons would be safely strapped tight to prevent it from falling and skewering someone. See the scene in the original pirates of the carribean if you want an example in media.

Absolutely. Assuming somebody has done some maintenance on it over the years, oil/wax etc so it's not rusted.

I have handled blades well in excess of 100 years that are still sharp and robust enough to use, if somewhat tarnished. Two things wreck the finish on blades, blood and sweat. A blade hung on a mantelpiece may be heat tarnished where it has been heated unevenly over time even a few degrees difference will pattern the metal eventually.

Just bought a small, cool looking Jaime Lannister artwork the other day with the quote "There are always lessons in failures." Hell, if the picture attachment feature of the forum was better I'd love to post a picture of it here.  :D
