The General Football Banter Thread
« on: March 27, 2011, 12:03:20 PM »
Well, having looked at the Slight topic-divulsion in the Joe Abercrombie thread, there are at least three of us who enjoy our football... So here we are :D

Met a Scotsman in a kilt on his way to Glasgow today :D

Also, good win for England! Jack Wilshere is scarily good. He works really well with Lampard.

I'm old enough to remember Gazza before he became a punchline; Jack Wilshere is potentially the best British central midfielder I've seen since then. England may have finally found someone to replace Paul Scholes. I just hope he stays injury free and doesn't burn out through overplay or wilt under the pressure that's inevitably going to be piled onto him.

I think having Scott Parker in the holding role was a huge part of Wilshere combining well with Lampard. Lampard and Wilshere in the centre of a midfield four wouldn't work. Lampard lacks the discipline to allow another to get forward, so Wilshere would be stuck marshalling in front of the centre backs if they were to play in Capello's usual formation. I'm hoping that for the next game we see Wilshere and Gerrard in the middle, with Rooney just in front of them, Carroll up front and Young and Johnson on the wings. It would be a genuine pleasure to see an England side that knows how to pass the ball.

Scotland are doing a good job of keeping Brazil out so far. Goodness knows how long it will last, but it would be brilliant for Scotland if they could hold Brazil to a draw. If there was ever a side in need of a confidence boosting result, it's Scotland.

EDITED TO ADD:- Typically, just as I hit "post" Brazil take the lead. ::)

I'm still in shock that the US drew with Argentina. We should only play them in cold places from now on.

Here we go! Charlton Athletic fan for my sins but living over seas rarely get to watch them these days. All time favourite footballer player is Gazza. Hate any big team, whether manure, chelsea or liverpool.

Don't be. Argentina aren't anywhere near as good as their reputation suggests. I know they have Messi, Tevez, Higuain, Di Maria and Aguero, but that's really all they have (Yes, I know what I've just said, but bear with me). Defensively they're suspect at best, so their forward play is tentative to compensate for that. If they had genuinely high quality defensive players they'd be untouchable, since their forwards could play with real freedom; as it is they're occasionally brilliant but mostly disappointing.

A very well made point. It says something when your best defenders are Heize and Coloccini...

I, on the other hand, am a (say it quietly) Chelsea fan.. Looking forward to seeing Torres score though...
