Just say no! To yourself if necessary.

i didn't realise this thread was here. the only good thing about my day job is that if i have enough shopfloor staff i can retreat into the office and open up OneDrive for half an hour to get some words laid down....

How is it that I'm back at my job for only two weeks and I"m already whispering "I quit" to myself like a crazy person in the office at 7pm???

just seeing how it sounds?

Not a fan of shifts first time doing them this century and 0:500 is an unholy hour to be awake*.

meanwhile, our place of work suffered an armed robbery on monday night. thankfully, nobody hurt.

we all love reading about sword fights etc, but watching cctv footage of some scumbag jumping over the counter with a massive kitchen knife in his hand is unnerving to say the least.

Man, really glad to hear everyone is okay, but your report confused me for a second. A dude tried to rob your workplace with nothing but a kitchen knife?

Then I realized you don't live in the U.S. :)

eeek Steven!!!
What kind of place is it?

And teba, have you seen the size of some kitchen knives? :o I know you were thinking "vs. guns", but sometimes it's easier for people to stab someone than to shoot them... I think.

Sorry to read it. hope no one was too badly shaken up. this sort of thing can stay with you and cause problems a lot later on.

My shop/I was robbed six years ago. Manhandled, gun to the head and pepper spray to the face. Luckily it didn't stay with me at all.
In hindsight it helped bonding with my boss a lot (she was there too), so it wasn't all bad...

ouch. it was nowhere near as bad as xiagan's experience, and the guy on the till seems remarkably unfazed by it all. it's a convenience store, owned by A Large Supermarket Chain.

@xiagan that sounds rough, and unexpected for Germany where gun crime is not a big thing.

I just found out that Iceland is the most peaceful country on the planet, who knew?

Could've been a toy gun. But no way to find out in that situation...

I forgot to comment on this, @Rostum, sorry!
It sounds like my first job, I had to wake up just before 5am! I don't think I could do it now in my old age ;)

Are you getting to sleep early, then? Has that solved your insomnia?

Best to assume it's real and not find out.

thanks  :) not had to deal with shifts for a while. It has helped with the insomnia but I am also not tired a lot of the time when I need to be sleeping. So I am not getting a lot of stuff done while awake as I am reading more and trying to sleep. Waking up a couple of hours before the alarm, wide awake and reading tends to mean I fall asleep 30 minutes before I have to get up and feel rough for it. I have had 4 hours sleep this afternoon (when I shouldn't have done) and probably won't sleep much tonight, but it's a long weekend as I don't start again until Monday night.
Once I have 12 weeks in. I can start applying for internal jobs and hopefully either get back into a quality or engineering role, but early days yet.

@xiagan glad you're not scarred!  You too @Rostum .  I once got tied up and beat over the head w/ a gun in an assault on an internet cafe.  Had to get get my scalp stitched back together again, but it was a nice way to make friends with the people I was tied up and held hostage with.

That said sometimes I wish someone would come into my office of my current job and stab me so I could go home for the day...  :)
