In case you were wondering on a scale from 1-10 i hate my job a 20.  Cuz even though you probably weren't wondering, I still feel the need to tell you.  20.

Quote
I just want to have time to write and to creative stuff.  At this point I'd do anything that gave me some free time b/c this 70-some hours a week is god awful.

And I thought 50 something hours was bad. :-( You got me in the feels.

Sounds like a hellaimportant job, but doing the work of three by yourself is some B.S. Sorry bro. You need a some kind of release before you snap.

haha, it just pretends to be important.  90% of it is soul crushing administrative hoops to do some 10% that could have been meaningful but sort of isn't b/c of some reasons it'd take awhile to explain and I probably shouldn't on a public forum :)  It's not always 70 hours... but some weeks it is....

7am and the draft of my report is finished!!!!

Haha i feel like this turned into less of a venting thread and more of a therapy for Bradley thread.

rant, man!  rant!

the rest of us are happy to hear tales from and commiserate with the next "most interesting man in the world"!

Well, I'm guessing you've got plenty of frustrating stories too! I imagine doing tech-stuff and having to interface with business-types that don't get anything about what you're doing can be pretty maddening too....

Whatever helps you, we don't really mind!
(gawd knows the other thread is mine, hehe)

I hope this month off will give you some breathing space.

By the way, if the grant was supposed to cover 3 people, and there's only you and not paid enough, who appropriated the money? Bad people >:(

Well, this explains the super odd hours I see you online, given your timezone. It sounds like you need some human rights intervention yourself.

It's more that whoever wrote the grant 3 years ago (and left right after it was awarded) over-committed with unrealistic targets. They aren't terrible people, the job just sucks.

The month off is actually a month on since I'll be teaching an intensive course (3 hrs of class time a day 5 days a a week) but hopefully I'll be able to squeeze in some time to do some academic writing and some fiction writing (errrrr.... revising... will this book ever get revised???) as well.  But it will be nice to escape the office for a bit.  I'd rather escape it by going to a hammock in Mexico though....

My guess is he's working ON the grant, as in, preparing it for submission? If so, this is what I used to do, only in a different industry. It sounds like Bradley's in the non-profit sector. In government contracting, we call them proposals but they're 75% the same thing.

Bradley, here's a suggestion - wait for a period when within 3 weeks there's some serious workload and let it slip either you get an assistant or you walk. If they don't get you an assistant, walk. There's nothing worth that kind of prolonged strain. And if you know grants, there's other places to work, including from home.

Hey Bradley, great  admiration for sticking with your work so long. You sure need a break, especially as you are there on your own and can't de-brief with others around you.  Hope you can work out some real time away for a while. Feel free to rant here anytime, we will be glad to listen even if we can't offer practical help.

Just a quick complaint about people who can't chew gum and walk at the same time. Dealing with a very bright exec who just can't get moving on something until something else is completely settled. No, just get started and keep things open-ended for a bit. I think I'll ask for a cattle rpod for Christmas.

Interview at 10:00 Tomorrow, with hindsight getting a root canal this afternoon may have been a mistake.
In pain and dribbling the perfect interview preparation.

Take a lot of paracetamol half an hour before - not codeine, that will leave you sleepy, hehe

Good luck!!!

Hope you have settled the mouth after a night's sleep and SB's good advice. Good luck from me as well  :)

Thank you kindly. Thankfully it has settled down a bit but no painkillers for me. I need to be up early and able to concentrate.
