SFF conventions/events

Thought this was the best place for this...

Okay. I know a great, great deal about anime and manga conventions, seeing as I attend them. However, it didn't even occur to me until I saw the writers I follow on Twitter talking about it a while back, that SFF conventions exist. In all honesty, I thought that the US only really had them--and it's true they have the biggest and best. However, I am not Stateside, and have no inclination to travel there for cons. I am a UK guy.

I know about Eastercon (http://www.eastercon.org/index.php/Main_Page), but this is the only one I really know about. It's also awkward, as the next one is literally a week before an anime convention I attend...and that would hit hard on the wallet! Plus, I'd love to know if there are any more...surely there are? I'd also love to know if there are any one-day events kicking about. I'm not very well socially connected...so what I don't hear about on Twitter, I don't hear about at all!

There is the British Fantasy Society's Fantasycon which will be in Brighton 30th Sept to 2nd Oct. I'm going although I haven't been before so no idea if it's good or not.

Also, there will be the World Fantasy Con which will also be in Brighton in 2013 (It's in America before then!) but I believe you can book now, I'm thinking about booking for that too.

That's all the ones I know about so would be interested to hear more (also to hear if you're going to Fantasycon, it would be a great chance to meet up!

Of course, potentially there could be a Fantasy Faction Con one day...

I managed to get a ticket to this year's World Fantasy con. I would recommend getting tickets early if you can.

Also, I think it's a lovely idea to try to arrange meet ups at or near these events if possible. I would suggest putting any meet up places near convention venues so that those who couldn't get tickets to the big event have a chance to participate too.

Anyone planning to go to Comicon this year?

As Rhevian says, you should follow ANSIBLE - it includes a list of all the conventions (big & small): http://news.ansible.co.uk/ ... and is really helpful.

A meetup would be neat!

Thanks, guys.
I'll check those out.
I'm especially interested in anything in the south, as it's easier to get to, so definitely going to look into the Brighton events.

Pretty much a definite for Eastercon next year, too, all things allowing. :)

Meetups definitely sound like an idea!

Oh, curses!
Pity transport in and out of London is so bad (for me) else I really would have gone to this. Unfortunately, the travel logistics are awkward for a night-time event. Oh well; there's always a next time. : )
