Random note to my UK friends, as someone living with the weight of Trump's stupidity (and the GOP's treasonous enabling) every day...

THANK YOU for trolling the f*** out of our shitty manbaby president. I know he'll just yell "Fake news! The protestors love me!" but I hope at least some of the disgust is breaking through his Fox News bubble. The US has dropped the ball (even the opposition party here is refusing to impeach) but at least we have the UK (and others) constantly reminding Trump that he's a soup-brained moron.

Keep it up.

Met with Nemonte Ninquimo, a Waorani woman who led the charge to keep oil companies out of her community opening the door for legal cases all over the Amazon. There were 9 Waroni women present speaking to my students all but one of whom are also women. Her words were so powerful that while I was translating I could barely keep from crying (kinda funny as one of two guys in a room full of women)

Today on the radio they were talking about the donations that people gave for the tory party candidates' campaigns - some didn't even came from big corporations, these were normal people giving money! Why? What's the purpose?
It just feels so completely alien to me, especially when there are a ton of charities, local or not, that really need money to perform the most basic and important of duties...

Note: they also commented about the differences between UK and US, as the limit in this case was £150k.

Kallor shrugged. 'I've walked this land when the T'lan Imass were but children. I've commanded armies a hundred thousand strong. I've spread the fire of my wrath across entire continents, and sat alone upon tall thrones. Do you grasp the meaning of this?'

'Yes' said Caladan Brood. 'You never learn'

Sigh

Apart from the error, no doubt caused by never actually watching a second of the show you would have thought those of a religious calling who feel the need to censor other peoples viewing because it may be ungodly would have learnt their lesson after turning Life of Brian into a smash hit.

I would never call for the show to be censored but I won't be watching it. Not because I would find it offensive but because, and I know I might get a lot of flack for this, I didn't actually think the book was very funny.

Seriously though, not only did they not bother watching it, they couldn't even be bothered to find out which company made it. If you're going to be angry over something, you should at least do your research first.

Todat I got this book from the library: Why we get the wrong politicians, by Isabel Hardman.

It seems very interesting to understand UK politics, I'll get back to you as I read more.

So... America?

Earlier today I saw something about a state where Republican politicians are flat-out refusing to do their jobs and the police was being sent out to round them up, which in turn sparked support by armed militia men.

Are the news painting things as bleaker than they really are? Because it's easy to get the impression that the US is coming apart at the seams.

I presume you are referring to Oregon. They were protesting a bill to reduce gas emissions by 2050 or something.

Though I support climate change measures, I feel the politicians are going about this wrong. Rather than making small tactical changes to build momentum, they are busy grandstanding on 30 year plans which may or may not work based on sociopolitical changes interim.

It's the whole "armed militia" thing that raised my eyebrows.

A few things that should probably be added:

When that militia took over part of Oregon from Utah a few years ago, all the Republican presidential candidates, including Trump, tripped over themselves to endorse the cause of the terrorists (though stopping short of endorsing the action exactly) [https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2016/01/oregon\_militants\_obama\_adminis.html](https://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2016/01/oregon_militants_obama_adminis.html)

Then the GOP in Portland agreed to allow rightwing militias provide their security instead of law enforcement:

[https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jul/01/portland-far-right-rally-republicans-militia-security](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jul/01/portland-far-right-rally-republicans-militia-security)

[https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2017/06/30/19130461/multnomah-county-republicans-formally-allow-militia-groups-to-run-security](https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2017/06/30/19130461/multnomah-county-republicans-formally-allow-militia-groups-to-run-security)

Encouraged, a bunch of out-of-state rightwing militia types continued to invade Oregon. It was shown that they had a cozy relationship with the police the entire time:

[https://www.wweek.com/news/courts/2019/02/14/texts-between-portland-police-and-patriot-prayer-ringleader-joey-gibson-show-warm-exchange/](https://www.wweek.com/news/courts/2019/02/14/texts-between-portland-police-and-patriot-prayer-ringleader-joey-gibson-show-warm-exchange/)

There were other escalations. The right-wingers marched on one of the few minority strongholds in Oregon:

[https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2017/04/29/18983985/photos-and-video-saturdays-right-wing-march-left-wing-protest-in-montavilla](https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2017/04/29/18983985/photos-and-video-saturdays-right-wing-march-left-wing-protest-in-montavilla)

Some of the militia-types felt emboldened to start killing:

Started sacking union halls:

[https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2019/01/24/25623138/union-headquarters-vandalized-after-patriot-prayer-attention](https://www.portlandmercury.com/blogtown/2019/01/24/25623138/union-headquarters-vandalized-after-patriot-prayer-attention)

Among other things.

Thus far, the only response has been the GOP cheerleading and endorsing these assholes, the police cozying up to them, and the courts being very selective about what they do to these creeps, and they keep coming.

Lately, looking for a fight, they came down town and started bear-macing patrons in a bar. The police, slow to respond, were too late to do anything and little happened. So the owner of the establishment is trying to use civil courts to finally bring these jerks in:

[https://www.wweek.com/news/courts/2019/05/03/owner-of-local-bar-sues-joey-gibson-after-fistfights-and-pepper-spray-on-may-day/](https://www.wweek.com/news/courts/2019/05/03/owner-of-local-bar-sues-joey-gibson-after-fistfights-and-pepper-spray-on-may-day/)

These fascists have, in retaliation, decided to come back to Portland, burn the court papers, and try to pick fights yet again:

Since the Democrats in charge have been so feeble to do anything; the police and GOP have sided full on with the militias, and despite pleas nobody outside the state will acknowledge this breakdown, it's really not that big of a step that the militias are now shutting down the entire state.

Add those concentration camps for thousands of children and it's not far from Germany a few minutes before WWII...

Not being an American, the only thing I can compare this to is the plot of Far Cry 5.

Only then the government actually tried to do something about it.
