Music - Help or Hindrance?
« on: January 08, 2011, 07:57:23 PM »
I was curious whether anyone listens to music while they read. If you chose music based on the type of book you're reading at the time, or instrumental or just a random playlist.
Or is it all just a distraction?

I, personally, always listen to music when I read. I normally listen to Japanese and Korean music, but when I read I tend to listen to either English or instrumental music. I find they are better for 'background' music.

How about you?

Very good question!!!!

I find that I have to listen to music such as Dance. Nothing with lyrics because otherwise it distracts me... similar to when someone is talking, i.e. I'll read a page and realise I didn't take it in properly - does that make sense? lol

Japanese/Korean would be a good idea :) I used to love J-Pop a few years back.

I need quiet when I read or write or my brain wanders off. :)  I can sometimes read with the TV on, but I couldn't write while someone was talking to me if you paid me to do it. :D  I've always been jealous of people who could write and read to music, because music is one of my favorite things on earth.

Of course I've gotten really good at writing while my kids are going crazy in the background, reading not so much.  ;D

That's so interesting! I find I simply cannot concentrate without music. I get restless and my mind wanders, haha.

I always listen to music when reading (or writing), as my concentration wanders when other things are going on around me.

Normally I'll just listen to instrumental music, mostly from various soundtracks.  I'll pick music that shares the same sort of mood as my reading, normally.

If the book has a movie made of it, I'll often hunt down the soundtrack to listen to in the background.  I did Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter that way.  It helped me fly through them a touch faster.

It really depends what I'm reading. I can divide my attention to two or sometimes even three things, had three months practice at home- watching shows on the web, making cigarettes and translating the shows into polish for my grandmother all at the same time. But as for fantasy books I tend to only read them without music, sometimes when my parents are talking with my brother on Skype but I don't do it too often, but when I read my notes to learn from them, I do like to listen to music. Well I have to say that any kind of a background noise helps me a lot in studying. Got that from my technical school xD

No music here either, but I can read to the noise of the kids or tv.   :D

I often don't like not having any background noise, so the majority of the time I have music or the TV on. I can read over pretty much anything so I don't notice what music is on after a few pages :P
The exception is when I'm reading in the sunshine or in the garden, then I quite often don't like background noise. I hadn't really thought about it before, that's slightly strange!

I tune into music too easily to have it playing while I'm trying to read or write.  (Funny, though, I can nap with it going no matter what is playing or how high the volume is turned up.)

I try to listen to music when i read.
as many other mentioned instrumental music or soundtracks are my favourite reading music.

at the moment i listen to the soundtrack of "inception" - great movie and greater soundtrack, perfect for the third book of the nightangel trilogy!

Music is a must for me, whether reading or writing. The best thing for my to listen to is Iron Maiden, preferably their Brave New World album. It's got enough imagery to inspire but not influence me, and it's got a pace that's fast enough to keep me motivated.

When writing, I often slip in some folk/power metal e.g. Kamelot, Falconer, Serenity and Iced Earth. All damn good bands with really good imagery for the fantasy genre.

total help, both reading and writing.  I've also been known to have the TV on, and music, and be reading.

I'm weird, though. I wrote my master's thesis in a bar.  The noise level was just right.  Good thing I worked there, though.  Might have gotten expensive, both for the drinks and my liver, if I hadn't.

I used to be able to listen to music while reading, but since my musical tastes have changed I seem to have to actively listen to it otherwise it's nothing more than a distraction.

I'm very easily distracted and often find a quiet place to read. Talking, music, television, the sound of my daughter banging around with her toys, they all pull me away from my book.
