Title: How many hours a day do you spend reading?
Post by: AlmightyZael on September 29, 2016, 05:15:44 PM
I only read in bursts of about half an hour at a time, a couple times a day. Personally I'm a slow ass reader, so slower sections of books tend to make me read less frequently (like I say, short bursts so I have less motivation to return to the book etc).

But I always see on here that people DEVOUR novels, one after the other and have read dozens and dozens of books by the end of the year. Is it your main hobby or do you just read quickly?

this is almost identical to my own reading -- time allotted, slow reading, and all.  i make it through maybe half a dozen books a year.  maybe.

I usually read between 30-45 minutes before turning the lights out.

These days that I'm not working I also read about half an hour after waking up, and maybe another half hour during the day.
And when I have insomnia, that's another 30-45 minutes in the middle of the night.

Usually I get about a book a week (around 5-6 days) - my average of the last 3 years was 58 books.

Depends on the book. If it's really good, and there's nothing important which needs to be done, I can easily spend an entire day reading. When that happens it usually equates to reading an entire book in one day, though that's for more standard length - it creeps up to two or three days for exceptionally long books. For example, while on holiday at the start of this year, I read 12 books in 14 days, but that didn't include anything overly long. On the flip side, it can take a couple of weeks to read even a short book that doesn't grab me like that, because I end up spending more time doing other stuff instead.

Overall, pretty sure my average over the course of a year is somewhere around 6 books per month; average daily reading is two or three hours, but it does vary a hell of a lot. And on top of that reading I do have other hobbies... (http://boincstats.com/image/emoticon/happy.gif)

My reading speed has gone up , for every day spend on F-F I receive a slight bonus to my reading speed for loyalty. I lose this bonus if I don't show for a day and have to start from the beginning again.

Atm I have my normal reading speed plus a 10 day bonus.

I typically like to be able to set down and have a proper session but lately I'm finding out that if I don't do it in bursts (I try to at least get a chapter done in a burst) then I'll never really get anywhere.  Hopefully when our newborn gets a little older and our oldest starts becoming more independent I'll be able to go back to my long sessions.

I usually get 45 mins or so on lunch break, then another hour before bed.

*side note*I've been listening to audiobooks at work. Dramatically increases reading time.

I don't really time it, but it would have to be at least an hour a day, possibly 2. It does also depend on the book/s I'm reading at the time. It must be working, though, because I finished book no 85 for the year last night and I'm looking at breaking the 100 mark for the first time in a few years.

Depends on the book and my mood. I can read for hours and hours, nearly all day at the weekend, if I love the book and am in the right mind set. When I read Lord of the Rings many moons ago I finished in two weeks. Lately, Words of Radiance at 1300 pages, I finished in a week (it immediately became my fave fantasy book!)

On the other hand, Abercrombie's Blade Itself just took me 2 weeks and is much smaller. I managed not more than an hour or two a day. While I enjoyed it, I just didn't have the mind frame I did with WofR, and to be honest I just liked the latter a whole lot more. So it really depends.

Basically: 0.
Or 1, if you count listening to recorded books on my commute.

But that 0 galls me. Oh, time, time, time.

I try to get in 1-2 hours on weekdays. Weekends I try to at least double that. Work and a new relationship makes it kind of tough to maintain though.

I count audio books, too. No shame in my game.

Audio books aren't reading, but I count them anyway - it's not lazy or anything, just convenient!
But I've never used one, don't really have to commute very far, so i doubt i'd get the full benefit.

That varies but under normal circumstances, I tend to read 2 hours a day.

I usually read on my way to and fro work. And after my kids sleep, I try to read more but I lose my war against sleep most of the time due to all the tiredness my kids give me :)

I read for a year almost exclusively on an ereader that tracked hours read and stuff. At the time it averaged out to nearly 2 hours a day, but some weeks I read almost nothing, and other times a series grabs me so I do nothing but read for days on end.

If I start a book and like it, I kinda binge read 8-10 hrs even putting off work, sleep try to finish it as fast as possible.

Or when I get into a rut, I kinda go for weeks re-reading segments of books and not venturing outside known comfort.

In total, I'd say I read for 1-1.5 hours on the days that I read. Sometimes I don't read, but usually I read 3-4 days a week, minimum.
