Title: Got a blog? Share it!
Post by: pornokitsch on June 03, 2013, 05:49:16 PM
It strikes me that our member blogs thread has kind of fizzled out. So let's kick that back into gear:

1) What's your blog?
2) What sort of stuff do you write about? (Your own short fiction, fantasy book reviews, SF book reviews, gender politics, photos of your garden, whatever...)
3) What's the URL?
4) Why'd you start blogging and/or what do you like best about it?

Go!

1) It's my authorial presence on the web - something few published writers can get away without these days

2) I blog news about my books (obviously), but also about the technology I use for writing (hardware and software), the occasional book review, plus any topics vaguely related to my writing that take my fancy: research trips, SF conventions, stuff going on in the fantasy genre, and so on.

3) My blog is here: http://www.annelyle.com

4) I've had a website since the late 90s (I'm a full-time web developer), but I started blogging in earnest in 2005 when I decided I needed a kick in the pants if I was to get published before retirement! I love that I can go back and read about my early struggles and see how far I've come :)

1 - something I should remember to do more often -- I'm an intermittent blogger, because I have trouble thinking of topics. I do better on twitter.

2 - Writing stuff mostly (maybe I should post garden pics...). Lately I started a series of Women To Read posts (in response to a twitter hastag). I think I blew that yesterday when I did a whole list of them in response to the SFWA debacle. But hey, there's a great list of women to read in SFF there! It's not in the slightest comprehensive, so come and add to it.  I suppose I shall have to think of something else now...or find more women to read :)

3 - http://francisknightbooks.co.uk/category/blog/

4 - I originally started blogging under my own name not long before my first book came out (I *think* my publisher suggested it) in 2009. This blog I started as soon as we'd settled on the pen name.

1) Like Anne Lyle said, it's my presence as an author, although in my case a self-published one.

2) Writing- or language-related topics (once a week), a crappy, fluffy serial romance/fantasy novel (also once a week) and links to the reviews I do as a guest reviewer on a joint blog run by someone else (as and when I finish a book). Plus odds and ends whenever I feel I need to.

3) http://theftandsorcery.wordpress.com/

4) Originally as a way to try and get myself a little exposure, since that was the recommendation for self-pub authors. It was a bit daunting at first, but four months down the line I find that I actually quite enjoy the whole thing, and it's a good way to get the brain going about all sorts of topics. I've also come across a lot of really enjoyable blogs from other people. Don't know what it'll be like once I run out of things to write about, but I've got a number of topics lined up, so I'll cross that bridge when I get to it and will just have fun on the way there.

1. Mine is also my author presence online, in addition to Twitter and Facebook. It's where I post the detailed stuff.

2. I tend to write about SF and Fantasy, about writing, the odd book review, personal stuff, and helping to promote people I like :) Also the odd interview and sometimes pictures of my dog.

3. http://www.hierath.co.uk/ - my Twitter is hierath77 (I try to be a bit consistent - the man who lives in Canada and sells leaf-blowers at hierath.com is not me, though we have chatted in the past...)

4. I used to have a personal blog on Livejournal for many years, but LJ became very unreliable and full of spammers, so I switched to Wordpress around two years ago to help with book promotion, and to chat to readers about whatever was in my head!

First non-author, woo!

1) A review blog where I can get my thoughts out on novels I liked or disliked and maybe convince someone to read them along the way.

2) Starting out with mostly reviews of SFF and historical fiction, but I have a giveaway up with a signed copy of Mark Lawrence's King of Thorns and I hope to expand it a bit with more practice.

3) www.abitterdraft.blogspot.com

4) Mostly what I said in the first question, I just needed a place to share my thoughts, but being able to get review copies of books and run giveaways is quite rewarding.

OK, so I just put my blog up yesterday, and I only have two posts up so far, but still! It counts! :D

1) It's a review blog, still very new. I'm still getting accustomed to being a part of the "blogosphere".

2) It's where I plan to review pretty much everything I read (mostly fantasy, sci-fi, and classics). I'll get more content up soon.

3) www.singmuses.wordpress.com

4) I wanted to start blogging because I read a lot, and often have strong opinions of the books I read. I wanted to share them with everybody. It also gave me something productive to do with my summer!

1) It started as somewhere to reread Dave Sim's epic graphic novel Cerebus the Aardvark, all 300 issues of it, largely because I never made it to the end when I first read it.
2) Mostly now it's reviews. I do occasionally reread bits of Flashman novels, I finished Cerebus some years ago. I have the occasional rant, but mostly I review what I read.
3) http://travelsthroughiest.blogspot.com
4) I started it as sort of an online journey of my experience with Cerebus and it sort of morphed. I've never had many readers and I do feel like I'm talking to the air a lot of the time. I find it's a good way of charting what I read, though. It's also helped me become a lot more critical of what I read and in some ways that's also assisted with my own writing.

1. It's mainly a genre review blog, but I can delve into the occasional rant, random thought, or article on writing. Mainly reviews, though.

2. See #1.

3. http://acerbicwriting.wordpress.com/

4. I wanted to jot down all these thoughts I have on books and junk. Wordpress works because Goodreads never looked that enticing. That, and if I become an author I'll already have a website for them to consider.

1) An eclectic review book blog. (wanting to bring the focus back to fantasy later in the year when I'm caught up on a few things)

2) Reviews of varying genres (fantasy, paranormal, chick lit, historical, non-fiction, contemporary, whatever I'm in the mood to read), guest content, 'what I'm up to' type posts, discussion/response posts, the odd 'top ten', a bit of incoming.. whatever fits at the time! :) I just have fun with it.

3) http://onceuponatime.jaedia.net/

4) I think I've always blogged in some way or another.. I started hobby blogging a few years ago though when I was really getting into World of Warcraft and when I quit a couple of years ago I morphed my personal blog into a book blog and haven't wanted to stop! I love being the girl with too many books, and I love the community. Seriously. Just want to cuddle it. C'mere, blogging community! *squeezy cuddle*

1) A review blog
2) Book reviews, most genres as my taste is eclectic (fantasy, PNR, UF, historical fiction, fiction, steampunk, romance, you know it)
3) http://books-forlife.blogspot.com
4) I wanted to talk about books :D And as my friends do not read, or read waaaay to slowly I found blogging a wonderful way of doing it

I figure since I started using my blog again I should post it here. :)

1) My blog is a place for me to post rambling things when I remember it exists. It's mostly been personal/writing related of late.

2) I started out doing only writing related and book review posts, but when I became editor over here, I stopped doing reviews due to limits on my time. Now I use it mostly to talk about things that are too long to talk about on Twitter or Facebook and to do updates on what's happening in my writing and on Fantasy-Faction.

3) http://thewritewaytotype.wordpress.com/

4) I started my first blog when I sold crafts on Etsy. It was great! I loved meeting new people and talking about things that most of my real life friends weren't interested in. Since I started my writing blog, I still enjoy those same things, but I think I also use it more as a place to get ideas out of my head and share them with other people. I guess I hope that what's happening in my life can perhaps help others as well. Whether it's important life issues or just a reminder to save your work every once and a while...speaking of which: Make sure you save your work while you're working! ;)

Checked out the blogs listed here and added you guys to my feed reader! Thanks for starting the list, I am always looking for other blogs to read :)

I might as well jump in too, though my blog is quite new.

1. Blog for people who both read and write - focus on fantasy, possibly some horror.

2.  I share notes resources I find while working on my fantasy novel, collection's of resources, and also post reviews and the occasional rant or two.

3. www.ForFictionsSake.com

4.  I'm in digital marketing, so I've been blogging professionally for awhile, but this is my little escape to write about things I enjoy and connect with like minded folks :)

Well I just started mine, so might as well put it up here.

1. It's pretty mismatched, mostly  my spot for ramblings on multiple topics as well as posts on writing and eventually some actual excerpts.

2. See #1.

3. http://jonathanrock411.wordpress.com/

4.   Everyone else was doing it.  Actually inspired by Jian, Wilder and Chill (or whatever he's calling himself these days),

1. Pens and Swords - Where Language Is Power

2. Primarily about my works-in-progress and my approach to writing, but I'm starting to branch out. I wrote my first blog about teaching English Language Arts a couple weeks ago, and next week I'm blogging about my addiction to CRPGs (Dragon Age: Origins, in particular).

3. http://www.pensandswords.com (http://www.pensandswords.com)

4. I started this blog back in 2003 after I won the Maiden of Pain open call from WotC. The idea was a report from the trenches, what it was like for a D&D fan and aspiring writer to get their first break. Now its part promotion, part soapbox, and part journal.

Everyone else has one. Why not?

1) Good question. It's new, it may just be a place for me to keep track of reviews I send out other places, or it may become place where I will post more.
2) Mainly reviews, but also some random musings over other genre related topics as they strike me (or thats the plan. Only have one of those so far).
3) http://www.tenaciousreader.com
4) I've found I like to write the occasional review and I wanted somewhere to "collect" them. :) And sometimes, I have other genre topics that I think I'd like to write about.

I feel like such a lemming.

I recently started a blog to go along with getting my first published novel out there - just general thoughts on publishing, writing, game development, and so on. I don't update it too often, but I do try to write something interesting every few weeks. It's more autobiographical than analytical.

goodreads.com/author/show/7171696.T_Eric_Bakutis/blog

If I had to say why I started blogging, I'd say it's simply because I felt like sharing. :)

Edit: My blog has actually moved to Wordpress, and there have been many updates since I posted this! My current blog, where I talk all about virtual reality, game design, and writing, is called Gamewords, and can be found here.

This is a little off topic, but I just thought I'd let people know I've discontinued Travels Through Iest. There are reasons behind it which are in the final post. Anyone from here who followed it thanks. I may start another one up in the near future, but that will be about a YA fantasy adventure called Realmspace that I've written and my efforts to try and get it published. Thanks.

1. It is, as many have said, an authorial presence and marketing tool that the experts seem to recommend these days.

2. I post random thoughts about writing, subjects connected with fantasy/the book and generally anything that I think might be of interest. I'm gloing to start putting some short extracts on it too.

3. http://vispadjinn.com (http://vispadjinn.com)

4. I have another blog connected with my work as a self employed tutor so I had already acquired the habit of blogging. I did start this one primarily for marketing but i do enjoy the feeling of connecting with  readers out there .....well, maybe a few....

1. It's a wordpress hosted blog. I use it for all kinds of things.
2. Like I said in #1, I tend to blog about a little of everything. I own a small brewery so I blog about my beers and craft beer related things. I blog about techniques for utilizing social media. I blog about various different things in geek culture. Lately I've mostly been blogging about the novel I'm about to self publish. I don't do it to try to push it down people's throats. I hate doing that. I've mostly been blogging about it a lot lately because I am so close to having it out there and, well, I'm quite excited about that.
3. http://joebrewing.wordpress.com
4. I started a blog because I thought I should try to expand my web presence. With both an operating business and a pending self published novel, I imagined that both could benefit from me having a larger web presence.

I LOVE doing guest blogs. If any of you want someone to do a guest blog for your site then I would love to take a stab at it. I have been doing a lot of guest blogs from the POV of a character from my novel named Azrael lately. They really are a lot of fun to write and I write them where he discusses whatever the blog site would normally discuss.

Making a second entry here, which I guess is kind of cheating, but I wound up one blog and I have started another, which is different:
1) What's your blog? It's on blogger and it's mostly me talking.
2) What sort of stuff do you write about? (Your own short fiction, fantasy book reviews, SF book reviews, gender politics, photos of your garden, whatever...) It was started largely because I have a recently completed YA fantasy adventure (Realmspace) that I am endeavouring to get published and I thought it might be an idea to blog the experience as well as discuss the writing and the concept.
3) What's the URL? http://purpledovehouse.blogspot.com.
4) Why'd you start blogging and/or what do you like best about it? I started blogging to chronicle the reading of the epic graphic novel Cerebus the Aardvark and it morphed into a review blog (the recently closed http://travelsthroughiest.blogspot.com). I got rather disillusioned with the whole review thing, but I do like putting thoughts out there and interacting with the occasional visitor I do get.

I haven't been blogging long, but Manic Pixie Dream Worlds is a blog about the intersectionality of feminism, other historically underrepresented populations, geek culture, tropes and characters other broad writing topics, and of course spec fiction, with the requisite amounts of both gushing and ranting.  http://manicpixiedreamworlds.wordpress.com/ (http://manicpixiedreamworlds.wordpress.com/)

1) A writer's blog, with occassional random stuff.
2) Flash fiction every Friday, and I'm currently also posting a weekly 'Top Ten Writing Tips' article.
Free stories (reprints) about once a month, occassional reviews and other mutterings.
3) davidgullen.com
4) One good thing for me is it makes me write a new story every week, which has taught me the useful lesson that I can actually do that. For you - I think that's for you decide!

I'm just starting to get into a blog schedule of posting twice a week. Mainly, it's reviews for fantasy (epic/sword/sorcery) books (though the last one and the one tomorrow are for crime/mystery books I just read). If I don't have a review ready, I'll talk about my writing. Posting twice a week is relatively new, so who knows what'll go up.

The link: http://www.booksbylkevans.com (http://www.booksbylkevans.com)

I initially started it as a place to promote my book (and I still have a page for it), but I found I really enjoyed doing reviews more than ranting on about myself. Bad marketing, I know. Oh well. Gotta do what you love.

One is www.scalentine.gaiesebold.com; which contains fictional extracts from the world of my Babylon Steel series (letters to Babylon asking for - ahem - romantic advice, notes from the Chief of the Militia's casebook, occasional short stories and so on).  The other, www.gaiesebold.com, is more general rambling about life, writing, and occasionally whiskey.

Cool thread and a good way to find a bunch of blogs since I've been kind of starved for them as of late (mostly I read terribleminds and a couple of others).

1) What's your blog?
It's called Philip Overby's Fantasy Free-for-All. It basically means anything fantasy related, I'll write about it. Greatest fantasy door knobs? Yep, if I feel like it.

2) What sort of stuff do you write about? (Your own short fiction, fantasy book reviews, SF book reviews, gender politics, photos of your garden, whatever...) I've recently started posting stories, including a blog exclusive series of shorts, but mostly it's writing topics, writer interviews, book reviews, a series I do called Judging a Book by Its Cover (I talk about what I think a book is about based solely on its cool cover), Bad Fantasy Art (I make bad art with MS Paint), and other weird junk.

3) What's the URL? http://www.philipoverbyfantasy.blogspot.jp/ (http://www.philipoverbyfantasy.blogspot.jp/)

4) Why'd you start blogging and/or what do you like best about it? I used to have a blog I did about Japan, but I ran out of stuff to talk about recently and decided fantasy is my first love. Therefore I decided to dedicate a blog to anything and everything fantasy. It's a bit all over the place, but I kind of like that since I feel like my content can be anything. What I like most about it is that I get to experiment with different kinds of posts and see what generates the most interest. I did one article about how fantasy writers can learn from Breaking Bad which I enjoyed writing. The Bad Fantasy Art series is new, but I love doing that so far also.

I'm also an undead unicorn enthusiast. It's my totem animal.

It's a blog about my new book called Araman but also about me as a writer also so I plan to put things on there about new book idea's etc.

Currently it has things on there about how I am marketing my book so is a good place to go if people want to see what is working for me and what isn't. My twitter is a good place for that too @AuthorRMS

The ulr, if people are interested and would like to be the first people on there is http://authorrms.blogspot.co.uk/

Please be welcome to message me about anything you want to know regarding how my marketing idea's are going or if you have any new ways for me to try i'll obviously welcome those too :D

My blog is called All There Is...And The Rest Of It, which does have a story behind it.

Here's the link: http://allthereisandtherestofit.blogspot.com/

I write about the cats, the garden, updates on my books and occasionally on genealogy. I post pictures of the garden and cats and any cool stuff I take pictures of. Sometimes I rant about stuff that bugs the heck out of me, like lame protagonists or wandering POV. When one of my books is ready to pub, I do a cover reveal and all that.

I started blogging as platform building for my books. My first blog was so scary. I was sure all these people would come out of the blue to blast me for I don't know what. Little did I know that no one would even read it!

In addition to my personal review blog (Tenacious Reader (http://www.tenaciousreader.com)), I've also launched a collaborative blog with some fellow reviewers. It focuses on new releases in fantasy, with some coverage of select Science Fiction and Horror books. We are trying to publish all of our reviews within 2 weeks of publication date, preferably pre-release. So, if you are interested in what's coming out, you can check us out here:

The Speculative Herald (http://www.speculativeherald.com)

We also have some giveaways coming up, and we publish weekly lists of what is releasing.

Thought I'd share my blog with people, if you like the look of it come and say hi. There is no real theme to it, I cover whatever is in my head on a given day. But regular themes are Fantasy Book Reviews, Travel Stuff, Obstacle Race Reviews, Author Q&As, General Gubbins etc..

My blog is mainly about fantasy but I also post about historical fiction as their's a strong link, I believe. I post book reviews and articles; eg Merlin versus Gandalf - was Tolkien influenced by Merlin. I also give writing tips for newbies.

Also try out my Fantasy Jokes page. It's a bit of fun and I've changed elephant jokes into troll jokes and posted genie, fairy and other jokes. Feel free to help me out and send me yours. I'd like to hit 1000 jokes.

Hi there,

1) What's your blog?
It's a long term diary / billboard where I talk about important things in my life that might be of interest to people other than myself.
2) What sort of stuff do you write about? (Your own short fiction, fantasy book reviews, SF book reviews, gender politics, photos of your garden, whatever...) The tag line is "opinions on writing, game design, and my life" although the game design portion only happens once every blue moon. I talk about my own projects as well as cool stuff like the Patrick Rothfuss signing events I've attended.
3) What's the URL? http://kaiherbertz.com/
4) Why'd you start blogging and/or what do you like best about it? I started in 2013, when I started to treat my writing as more than a hobby. The best thing is the diary function of the blog to remind me of awesome moments, since I have a bad memory.

All the best,

Kai

1) The Iron Teeth: a dark fantasy web serial (http://www.ironteethserial.com/)
2) Well it's a web serial so I write periodic chapters for a online story set in a dark fantasy world. Every chapter is really the continuation of one long tale.
3) http://www.ironteethserial.com/
4) It's mostly a writing exercise so that I get in the habit of writing continuously and sticking to things. I also hope to get some feedback.

I'm pretty jealous I didn't think of Davidjb's idea first.

Anyway, I has two blogs.

1) The first is imaginatively titled Pete Long's Blog. Oh noez, you now know my name.

The second is called Much Ado About Rucking and I think that's the greatest name for a rugby blog ever.

2) The first is about everything that interests me bar rugby, but mainly Fantasy and my own writing. Latest thing up there was a review of Eddings' Pawn of Prophecy. With lots of gifs and memes because nerds love gifs and memes.

The second is all about the rugby. I should probably fold it into the former but a) I post too much rugby stuff b) I will die on the barricades for that blog name.

3) http://peatlong.blogspot.co.uk/

http://muchadoaboutrucking.blogspot.co.uk/

4) I started blogging because I have a lot of opinions and my opinions are better than other people's. Also, I have a compulsion to write.

@Peat (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=41189), I really enjoyed your review of Pawn. Back in the day, I enjoyed the heck out of that series, and probably would again. I grew tired of the rinse and repeat nature of further books. And some were downright awful. By the first series was a cheesy delight. My daughter frequently re-reads some of it in what we jokingly call the "good parts version", which means she searches for key bits of humor and drastically skims the rest.

Hmm. Too few farmboys/girls these days? Maybe I should address. ;)

Thanks Jmack :)

I often do the "good parts version" re-read too! Eddings lends himself very well for that.

And go for it! I'm quite serious. The modern heroes are street urchins and princes. Which is cool and all but I do miss some good old back country hero. Problem is, I'm not sure people have noticed the world has changed.

Now, if you want to do a really unique hero, do one who grows up knowing both of their parents in a supportive and loving environment... ;)

What's your blog?
Errr... I've got 2, working on 3...  The one that relates closest to this site is Nerd Empire, basically a site for me to nerd out online.  I have an older one called Politics and Chicken.

What sort of stuff do you write about?

So Nerd Empire is a work in progress (like my only book, which I've been editing for 5 years....).  I have some author-related stuff up right now (even though I'm not much of an author w/o a book...), but I don't really envision it as an author site.

Eventually I want it to be a nerd-interest monthly magazine.  Maybe I'll interview concept artists, do some social commentary on hacking in the media vs. real life.  Etc.  I just can't get it to look the way I want to, so I haven't launched yet.  Not for lack of trying. #veryveryveryfrustrating  I want it to look very article-like, magazine-like. I CAN'T GET THINGS TO FIT ON THE PAGE RIGHT AND IT'S DRIVING ME MAD!!!

Politics and Chicken has more of my blog posts on them, they're more like hyperlinked politico-social commentary with titles like "Muerta-palooza and white people" and "Missionaries, militaries and murderers" where I do things like compare Sara Palin and Mark Twain's folksy-ness in a chart. It takes a lot of work to write these, so I haven't been good about keeping up with it.

What's the URL

http://www.nerdempire.org/

https://politicsandchicken.wordpress.com/

Why'd you start blogging?

Mostly to express myself with politics and chicken.  I process the f*ed up way I see the world in prose and post it.  I probably have 6 followers :)

What I'd like to do w/ Nerd Empire is a little different.  I want to pull together a community of nerds to celebrate nerdness a sort of Take Back the Night and Now Take Over The World for nerdy kids that get bullied in school and became/will become adults that love nerdy stuff.  I'd like to get contributors and stuff so it's not just me writing on it.  Maybe something like this:

I'll just add my little link to the collection. My blog is part of my overall site and doesn't really have a name, though the link to it is called Town Crier, so I suppose that would be it.

I generally write about (fantasy) literature - not specific books or reviews, but rather literary theory. I have one post that discusses just how opposite to each other fantasy and science fiction is; another is a discussion of archetypical symbolism and narrative patterns in fantasy (that post is basically an abbreviation of my master's thesis from university). I just wrote a post about world building in fantasy, but that was a guest post on somebody else's blog. I also often mention etymology, since that is something I am spending a lot of time on in regards to fantasy.

The site is here: http://www.annalsofadal.net (http://www.annalsofadal.net)

I blog mostly to shamelessly get attention from the fantasy community, but it's also a good outlet for my thoughts on the genre, the art, and a lot of other areas. Considering these topics also often ends up helping me contemplate my own writing and improve it.

Awe!  Thanks!!!!!

I lived in South America for more or less 4 years at various times.  Sometimes working for NGOs, sometimes doing research in the Amazon. (I've also worked in Mali, Niger, Colombia, Mexico, Indonesia, Malaysia) I've written a lot of creative nonfiction on it, but never really gotten any takers on a long-form nonfiction reflective essays. Not sure what to do with it all.  I've got a fucktonne of those sorts of things sitting on my hard drive.

I tried to read your rugby blog but I'm from the states and super nerdy and don't follow sports and you were using all these advanced sports words I don't know so it sort of read like fasdjklfdsa ljksfadjlfk  fdsaljkfsadjlk backs fasljkfasjlsfjlkfsd rugby falkjasdfjklfdsa team.

Oooohhhh sounds right up my alley! I like the site and your endorsements are hilarious. Congrats on being cool enough to get a guest post!  I liked your musings on Sci Fi vs. Fantasy-- for me the difference is fundamentally about a nostalgic reificaiton of hierarchy and the status quo (fantasy) vs. dystopic social critique (sci fi).  I wanted to comment on your blog but I don't think comments are enabled... Good stuff!!!!

I'm glad you liked it! That means a lot. After reading your reply, I did a little jiggery and added a comment box to the blog posts. I think it may require you to sign up to disqus (the platform for the comments), and I understand if you prefer not. If you do want to leave a comment on the post, I'd love to have a discussion about it. I think you're right in many ways about fantasy pulling backwards in time, towards what once was (usually utopian), and science fiction pulls forwards in time, towards what could be (usually dystopian, as you mention). I touch on it with my hourglass metaphor, but I didn't consider the utopia/dystopia aspect... maybe a topic for a future blog post. =)

If fantasy is about nostalgic thinking about hierarchy and the status quo, that's a relatively new thing imo (and one that's being challenged again), for there is little of that to Howard, Leiber or Moorcock. But this might be one for a topic elsewhere in the forum?

Hi, all! :)

1) My blog is called You and I Books. (Named after one of my favourite "screamo" bands.)
2) I mainly write fantasy reviews but anything I read I will rate including thrillers, history, autobiographies, sci-fi, classics. What I read and review just depends on what I pick up spontaneously from my library at home.
3) www.youandibooks.wordpress.com
4) I saw all these people on Goodreads writing reviews and getting loads of likes so I thought that I would give it a go. I randomly made it to #97 best reviewer in the UK, thought that was cool and the decided to take it a bit more seriously. I started the blog about 5 months ago and it is doing pretty well. Check it out if you have a spare two minutes.

@Yora

Thrawn (Star Wars Disney Canon Novel) by Timothy Zahn

n this definitive novel, readers will follow Thrawn’s rise to power—uncovering the events that created one of the most iconic villains in Star Wars history.

One of the most cunning and ruthless warriors in the history of the Galactic Empire, Grand Admiral Thrawn is also one of the most captivating characters in the Star Wars universe, from his introduction in bestselling author Timothy Zahn’s classic Heir to the Empire through his continuing adventures in Dark Force Rising, The Last Command, and beyond. But Thrawn’s origins and the story of his rise in the Imperial ranks have remained mysterious. Now, in Star Wars: Thrawn, Timothy Zahn chronicles the fateful events that launched the blue-skinned, red-eyed master of military strategy and lethal warfare into the highest realms of power—and infamy.

After Thrawn is rescued from exile by Imperial soldiers, his deadly ingenuity and keen tactical abilities swiftly capture the attention of Emperor Palpatine. And just as quickly, Thrawn proves to be as indispensable to the Empire as he is ambitious; as devoted as its most loyal servant, Darth Vader; and a brilliant warrior never to be underestimated. On missions to rout smugglers, snare spies, and defeat pirates, he triumphs time and again—even as his renegade methods infuriate superiors while inspiring ever greater admiration from the Empire. As one promotion follows another in his rapid ascension to greater power, he schools his trusted aide, Ensign Eli Vanto, in the arts of combat and leadership, and the secrets of claiming victory. But even though Thrawn dominates the battlefield, he has much to learn in the arena of politics, where ruthless administrator Arihnda Pryce holds the power to be a potent ally or a brutal enemy.

All these lessons will be put to the ultimate test when Thrawn rises to admiral and must pit all the knowledge, instincts, and battle forces at his command against an insurgent uprising that threatens not only innocent lives but also the Empire’s grip on the galaxy—and his own carefully laid plans for future ascendancy

Thanks, @J.R. Darewood. I knew there was a place for it, but hadn't put in the time to look.  ::)

I've had "Tales of the Starlit Lands" in my brain for decades. I don't know why it took me so long to do something about it, but you're right -- I'm darn lucky it was available!

Watch this space for double-post.   8)

p.s., while trying to type this space, I temporarily misspelled your moniker as "J.R. Dareword". Hmmm. I like that one too.

Announcing JMack's blog: www.starlit-lands.com (http://www.starlit-lands.com)!

Right now, I'm re-posting stories I've written for the monthly Fantasy-Faction contest. Over the last few weeks, I've been branching out into longer stories, so soon there should material that hasn't been seen before.

I know some folks here have already checked it out. But all are welcome!  ;D Leave a comment, too, if something strikes a chord.

Earlier this month I set up a brand new blog. I figured since I talk about fantasy here,  I should have a place to discuss science fiction.
Right now it's book reviews and opinions, but should my fiction writing take off, that'll likely change.

1) Writer's Tower Blog
2) I write about my own books as well as about writing, the process, the ups, the downs, as well as my experience as a writer on this journey to spin a tale.
3) http://author.jonray.net/writers-tower-blog/
4) I started a blog for two reasons, to keep me active as a writer and to as a way to share my thoughts in the background, not often presented in my works for fiction.

Hi guys!!!

I'm finally fixing up my website!!!
So I posted one of my short stories on the site, and I've been experimenting with ways to make it look pretty (parallax images, animated pullquotes, etc).  Here's where I really need your help.  You don't have to actually read it, but I'm trying to figure out if I should keep or cut the pullquotes and the images (eg should I make them regular images instead of parallax? is it better to make them full-width? Should I just delete them altogether?)

If you can, please take a glance here!

Also @CameronJohnston a note for you below:

I added a bit to the interview we did to reflect your upcoming release, and re-posted both on my site and on medium.  That means 1) the original URL of our interview is gone and 2) I've got links to your series page on the amazon page.

Here's the new links to the interview:

@J.R. Darewood:

I have no idea what you mean here by parallax, but...

I like the images a lot and they really add to the visual experience of the web page. I also like the idea of the quote pop-out, thought this particular one is, of course, gross. But only one makes no sense. I’d put one at or near the very top as a teaser to build interest, one in the middle, and one nearer the end.

Meanwhile, I guess I should actually read the story, huh?  ;)

Thanks for checking it out!  Parallax is when the images move as you scroll down the page (assuming I did things right, the second image does this but not the first). I also added animations to the pullquotes so that they fly in from one side or the other. I was just worried it might be too much and feel distracting/tacky as opposed to just having the image stay in place.

Hmmm maybe I should have used a more innocuous quote instead of  "Coffee faded from his mind as the all-consuming urge to shit took over."

I don’t think the parallax or fly in worked on my iPhone.
I’ll check on a full browser.

Yeah, you can only see the effects on a webpage.  I think @Eclipse actually has read the story in book form, I'd be curious what you think of the images and whatnot at a glance.

I meant to add my website/blog about a year ago but forgot. I write about the themes behind my fantasy, and seem to be doing something a bit different from other writers (at least the ones I've seen) and I'm not yet sure whether that's good or not, but more people are visiting.

My tagline is nonfiction to show you other worlds—fiction to take you there.

My latest article, Tarot & Me, has been my most popular so far. You can see the website here https://www.nedmarcus.com (https://www.nedmarcus.com).
