Title: Goodreads
Post by: ChristinaJL on January 07, 2011, 03:56:34 PM
Is anyone else on Goodreads?  I'm ChristinaJL on there, same as here if you'd like to add me.  Not many people I know use it, so I'm looking for more fantasy fans to add me as a friend and send me some book recommendations!!!   ;D

I am!  I was just playing with it yesterday.  I'm Autumn2May on there too. :)  I don't have a lot of books listed, but I haven't been able to read much since I had kids. :P

I just sent you an add request.  I'm on there as "kysis".  I need some book recommendations, too.  It seems that most of my favorites list is sci-fi.  I totally never noticed.

My reading really dropped off when the kids were born.  However, they're both now in full-time school and I've yet to find a job, so I'm taking my time to read as much as it fits around family, cycling and spinning.   ;D

I've sent you a friend request Autumn.   ;)

thanks, I've accepted!!  I have loads of books so far in my list - well most that I've read in 2009 and last year.  I might even try categorising the fantasy books once I've read enough!!

I'm using it to keep track of the books I've read, especially as I've challenged myself to read 52 books this year.   :o  I'm also hoping by having more friends (have sent you a friend request btw  ;D) that I'll get more ideas on what to try, especially books that I might not think about trying.  I also like to look at reviews of books too, but then maybe I'm a geek!!

I use it for keeping track of my books - I'm ocd when it comes to organising my shelves *grins* I also enjoy the community on there - both the friends I have made and the group pages I've joined are really fun/interesting.

Will have to look into it then. I 've read some reviews on there but I don't like the lengthy reviews, they give away to much of the story. But that's another story...

Post by: thedoctor on January 21, 2011, 03:27:01 AM
Wow this site looks decent. I've got the same problem as a few others though - I can't remember all the books i have read! In fact, with the exception of some of the big series that I have read (e.g. discworld), I can't remember many at all!

Oh well, every time I remember one I will add it to the list. I see what people mean about the "to-read" list growing. I can see that becoming dangerous! I have a much more modest goal of just 16 books to read, but I am hoping that this will help me stay motivated.

I'm on there as chrisdavis1083 (same as my twitter). I've added a load of you guys to help with recommendations and the like (although feel free to decline if you would prefer!  :'()

Thanks!!   It's not just my to-read list that's growing, but the books I've bought recently too, must have a backlog of about 8 now, so I'd better get reading!!!  ;D

I've added most of you on Goodreads now. Currently I use a simple bookshelf system to organize my books, for example non-fiction, fantasy, crime etc. However I also see others using a more elaborate system such as set in UK, cold or forbidding hero etc. What do you all prefer?

Yeah it does lack the polish that some other social reading sites have. I guess they are trying to reach a critical mass and provide the required functionalities before fine-tuning the site.

Shelfari looks much better, I think that GR is a better book mgmt site. I love the Status Updates that GR has. If Shelfari had that, I would probably abandon GR.

Although, I have found that GR has better group discussions than Shelfari.

Post by: Ken on January 25, 2011, 01:53:13 PM
Before joining Goodreads, I looked at both Shelfari and aNobii and thought they have a more attractive layout and better interface design than Goodreads. However I settled with Goodreads because it offers a better community and interaction with authors.

I guess I am expecting the forum to be much less active this month as the majority of members are writers of some description, or aspiring writers - and this is 'novel writing month'... I hoped there would be more readers than writers in the GR group and I was just a teeny bit disappointed to find that most of the recent posts have been from writers plugging their books and there hasn't been a 'group read' since feb. Like the others above me, I use Goodreads in order to categorize the books I've read - or have yet to read - participate in groups, connect with fellow readers and writers, and, ultimately, discover new and exciting works.

Hi all,

I stumbled across Goodreads last year desperate for recommendations in the fantasy realms.  I have been a member for a year and have never ventured to friend request before.  You cant imagine my joy to see this thread here on my favourite website. So, please anyone from FF I'd love to hear from you... and check out your fav rated reads and vice versa. :)

I just created an account and could use some friends to help with the ratings/suggestions :) I just randomly rated some of the books I have read based on what they showed me as I went through. I am impressed so far with what I have seen

My id is Arry on there as well

EDIT: I have updated my name on Goodreads to my actual name after a couple of friends in real life tracked me down (although we have 0 books in common .... )

What exactly is Goodreads all about? I can see it's a book site but following a few links from this thread is a little confusing. What do you actually do there?
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: AnneLyle on June 19, 2012, 06:54:52 PM
* Rate and review books you've read
* Keep track of the books you've read/are reading/want to read (given the length of my TBR list, this is the bit I find most useful)

That's the main stuff - there are discussion groups as well, but I've never gotten into them.

If you're an author, you can also see who's reading and reviewing your books - nice to know you actually have a readership when you're a newbie like me!
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: Hierath on June 20, 2012, 12:53:42 PM
Goodreads is quite addictive.  It's handy for keeping track of what you're read, and what you intend to read...  Good for reviews too, though I tend not to get too involved with the discussion groups.

I'm on there as a normal human being and an author - my author link is http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/935639.Joanne_Hall. (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/935639.Joanne_Hall.)  Also, I'm doing a giveaway for one of my books on Goodreads in July, I'll post in the small press section when it's up and running (because there's no shame in being in the small press section, right?  I'm only 5ft 2 - that's small enough... ;) )

I have a Goodreads account, but only use it to read reviews, so I hadn't explored my booklist until this thread came up.

It only lists my Kindle books on there, which is only for last few months, as I haven't had one for long.  None of the paper books I have bought over the years from Amazon.uk and Amazon US. Even the Add Amazon didn't work so it can't access back records.

The most unnerving thing was to discover it has a life of its own in deciding whether I have read them. ??? :o
Maybe just opening one counts as read?  Have given up on it as a record keeper.

Must be doing something wrong,  @Nora (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40237) did you read all those since you joined, or did your Amazon download them for you?

No my goodreads is connected to nothing. I entered those books by hand and have only read about 30 of them since i joined this year. Others I just enter manually as I browse lists and recognize a book I've read.

I don't use Goodreads and I don't set specific reading targets, but I do like to read more than 50 a year. I'm at about 83 now, I'd like to crack 100, but I don't think I'll quite get there.
Title: Re: Goodreads

We got a forum here, so it doesn't seem that surprising that the forum at goodreads sees little use.

I made the account primarily to try out the recommendation function. My usual approach to look up things that people keep talking about a year after release doesn't seem to work when it comes to fantasy books. Works great with movies, TV shows, and videogames, but books that are currently popular don't seem to be doing much for me.

This (I'm reading number 50 now)

Lately, because of the true monsters of books I read, I end up comparing number of pages instead of number of books. It's better, especially if you're self-competitive and want to 'improve' year over year ;)

I use it to just keep track of what I have read.  I don't set targets or do reviews or anything, its just an easier system than making my own spreadsheet which I would eventually lose.

Thanks to all my new Goodreads friends - needless to say they are all from F-F and I  enjoy seeing what books we like in common.  :)

I am rather alarmed by how this site has a life of it's own and is making untrue statements about my reading habits. Don't believe what it is saying . :o  It is stalking me on Kindle and says what % I've read,  which is silly because often downloading a new one  I read a chapter or so just to get a feel then leave it for later.

Hmm, is it also sending you a great many automatic recommendations from me and reporting on my every book-move? If so, don't necessarily believe it. If I want to recommend I'll do so with a review.

I am readjusting and correcting my lists to  get covers etc right because at first I just clicked author by author to get listed what I had read, now I'm tidying up. All those books it says I am reading is because at first I put all my reference books as Reading because they are on-going , but now I'll change them to Read to avoid confusion.

Question please - if you have reviewed a book elsewhere online, in another forum or for audible is it acceptable to put same review in Goodreads?

Yes, absolutely fine and very common. :) I always post my reviews on Goodreads regardless of where they were first posted. I like seeing everyone else's reviews in there as well, it's nice to look up a book and quickly have access to any reviews my friends may have written. I think publishers appreciate any exposure, so they are good with it..

Title: Re: Goodreads

I'm a bit annoyed with the goodreads challenge... I set it to 100 for this year, and because I only dated the novels I read, I am at 52 now (not including all the stuff I've put down halfway through).
But I read a lot of manga and graphic novels. So much so that if I add only two of the series I've read this year, it adds 41 "books".
They're in my read list, but I never took the time to date their reading to 2015.
So I'm perplexed as to what to do. If I account for my graphic reading, I'd be closer to 200, yet it doesn't feel like what the challenge was about. However, reading manga is still reading, so I'm considering adding and dating the entire series as a one block thing, as if reading the 14 tomes or 30 tomes of another, acted like reading one novel.

What do you guys think?
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: Lanko on December 16, 2015, 11:51:48 PM
I say go with it.

If 15 pages short stories are included in the challenge, mangas and graphic novels should be counted for sure!

Now that I think about it, I read the Paksenarrion omnibus (3 books) and 25% of the Complete Sherlock Holmes, and that would only count as 2 for the Challenge.
At least they are counting the number of pages as well.

Only on the My Year in Books. It shows the total pages you read.

EDIT: Actually, you can also go to My Books --> Stats. It even sorts your books by Stars as well. The page count is a little different, but approximate.
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: Yora on January 02, 2016, 10:32:54 AM
Funny to see how vastly people overestimated the number of books they were going to read in 2015. Only slightly more than 1% of the people who put down a number for the reading challenge actually reached it.
But 54 books on average seems completely unrealistic to begin with. Some people do read 100 books in a year, but the average for the participants is actually only 16.
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: night_wrtr on January 02, 2016, 12:24:23 PM
I managed 30 in 2015 only because I threw in a few short books...

This year I'm going to do more audible books while at work, so I think 35 is very doable. I didn't want to go too high because I plan on writing an awful lot starting next week.  8)
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: ultamentkiller on January 02, 2016, 04:44:24 PM
I'm going for 52 again.
I went beyond that this year, but I need to make sure I at least read one book a week if I can help it. If I get ahead of myself from reading small books, that's fine. Some weeks are really rough.
The ultimate goal is to read 100 pages each day. Again, when life gets busy that will be tough, but I think I can do it.

Yes! In a way. There's no chat/spam thing.
You can create your own shelves, join groups, read reviews, vote on stuff. Keep track of a lot of things about your reading, compare books with friends, get/give recommendations based on preferences, etc! You should join now!

I think you can use it like that, but I don't. I just use it to rate books once I've read them, so that I can keep track of all my ratings, when I read things, look at reading statistics (etc etc) really easily.
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: Yora on January 02, 2016, 08:52:26 PM
The most useful feature to me is that you can make a list of books you have read and rate how much you liked them, and which books you are planning to read, and it makes you a list of recommendations of other books you might probably like based on that.
And then you can read the user reviews of those recommended books to see if it's something you want to give a try.

I don't use it for social media myself but I think some people find it good for that. I choose to keep a private account limited to GR friends who are also here, but you can still give comment and chat among your friends or comment on other people's reviews.

I only joined recently thanks to @Eclipse (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=9661) but like it very much and find it useful. GR is one of  the best sites I have found with a system of  keeping book lists easily and creating shelves to suit exactly how you would like to sort your books, you just make up your own names for shelves.

The shelves can be straightforward like fantasy/classics or you could have 'my very most favourite and adored books' which is one I am considering.  ;D Also there is a wide choice of how much or little you want to sort them and display them and it is easy to do a quick sort on the criteria anytime. It also means you and all your friends can see all the books you've read and find how many you have in common.

There is quite a lot of fun, like quizzes and author news /information as well. If you decide to join let us know on this thread, I'm sure you'll get friend requests from here . ;D

One thing that people forgot to mention. The author groups. For example, the one for Brandon
Sanderson is awesome for finding out information in his Stormlight books that you would never even think about. It's fun to speculate with people on what will happen next. Also, you get fun discussions like, "Shardblade Vs. Lightsaber."
That's just the Sanderson one, but there are a bunch of others. Sometimes, the authors allow people to ask them questions, which is why I joined in the first place. And, if you want, you can ask questions to the community at large.
And of course, there's the ratings, reviews, recommendations, comparing book shelves with friends, seeing how many pages you've read all year, polls, quotes of the day, lists... Yeah. You should join. It's a book nerd's heaven!

I forgot to put this here: https://userstyles.org/styles/121888/goodreads-fix

After Goodreads upgraded their font/style last month, I started using this pretty much around the same time. It increases the size of the text and removes some blurriness in certain parts. Names and titles are much better with this (in my opinion).

Ah,  thanks! I've kind of adjusted to the new font, but it really is rather poor! Will look into this.

Also, that list has a distinct lack of Saurus (https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/37305669-kikisaur).  >:( She doesn't really use GR any more though... maybe we can persuade her to!

You may be able to  have it pinned to the start of the thread, but don't know how it could be updated. That makes more work for mods usually but there may be another solution.
Please @Arry (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=8809) or @xiagan (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1148) could you advise?

icq (i seek you) is like google talk.  but from the mid-nineties.  and where your id was a number, not a name.  for instance, like 6718218.

aim -- aol instant messenger.

yim -- yahoo instant messenger.

Aim was awesome. I used it in middle school to connect with facebook. And it had a feature you could use to text people for free.
I also used Windows Live Messenger. That one was cool because it had audio messaging before Aim did. And then there was Miranda IM, which combined AIM, Windows Live, and Facebook all in one. You could make your own soundpack for it and everything.
Man, like I use facebook anymore... I'm gettin old. :P

I researched for hours today about the @ mentions, and incredibly, for some forums it appears to work just right, while the general consensus is that spaces don't work.
Even went to the developers of this forum template and got the same answer. For some, it works, but for most it doesn't.
So I guess Bea will totally have to make that GR account now  ::)

About book comparing, I have a whooping 0% with SugoiMe, Pornokitsch and Yora.
The winner is...Saurus, with 85%, even though we never talked, although I do talk a lot with Raptori haha. Nora with 83% and Michael Sullivan with 82% complete the Top 3. Never read Sullivan either.

Everyone else is around the 70% mark.

Title: Re: Goodreads

Lanko I only look at the compares if we rated at least 20 books otherwise you could get a high percentage just for a couple of books you have both read

I've got 95% with Ryan but that's because we've only rated three books between us.

Haha I did that same research a while back, the reason it works for some and not for others is that there are multiple plugins for the same feature. The one F-F uses doesn't support spaces in usernames, whereas some others do. Think one of the admins here confirmed it.  :P

Unfortunately didn't realise at first connection on tablet was slow and kept pressing Send because I am impatient. You may have received it about ten times. Sincere apologies. :-[

Nope, only once. But what did you mean by "you need to know what you just became?" That sounded so ominous and scary hah.

EDIT: Ah, Valherus  ::)

I am getting strangely in appropriate recommendations from GR itself, that make me laugh, but question how their computer's recommendations formula works. Does anyone else get odd suggestions from GR?

Because I liked Capital by John Lanchester, basically about the middle-class inhabitants of a London Street and their lives as they coped with banking crash, terrorist threat and deportation orders but including  lighter everyday moments, GR sent me this rec:-

Quote
Kiss me Judas

Have you ever loved someone who's mortally wounded you? Phineas Poe, disgraced cop and morphine addict, has just been released from a psych ward when he meets a beautiful woman named Jude in a hotel bar. Red dress, black hair, body like a knife. He takes her back to his room and wakes the next morning in a bathtub full of blood and ice, missing a kidney.

Dragging himself from a hospital bed, Phineas discovers he wants to be with Jude like a hunger -- and he wants to find her and kill her. Falling for her is the start of a twisted love story that takes him from the snowy streets of Denver to the high plains of Texas where the boundaries between torturer and victim, killer and accomplice, become nightmarishly distorted.(less)

What am I missing? Better still, anyone here who read Capital, what on earth did I miss there?

Same thing here.

Because I read Prince of Thorns and Beyond Redemption, among others, Goodreads recommend to me pretty much every time Guns of the Dawn...which is labeled as Fantasy, Steampunk and Historical Fiction and pretty much has nothing to do with the the books I mentioned.

Quote
A standalone, action-packed pseudo-Napoleonic historical fantasy adventure from the esteemed author of the Shadows of the Apt series.

Denland and Lascanne have been allies for generations, but now the Denlanders have assassinated their king, overthrown the monarchy and marched on their northern neighbour. At the border, the war rages; Lascanne's brave redcoats against the revolutionaries of Denland.

Emily Marshwic has watched the war take her brother-in-law and now her young brother. Then comes the call for more soldiers, to a land already drained of husbands, fathers and sons. Every household must give up one woman to the army and Emily has no choice but to join the ranks of young women marching to the front.

In the midst of warfare, with just enough training to hold a musket, Emily comes face to face with the reality: the senseless slaughter; the weary cynicism of the Survivor's Club; the swamp's own natives hiding from the conflict.

As the war worsens, and Emily begins to have doubts about the justice of Lascanne's cause, she finds herself in a position where her choices will make or destroy both her own future and that of her nation.

But that's the only case so far, or maybe I only noticed because this book appears pretty much every day on my recommended tab.

What gave you that impression? But now that you put it this way, maybe I should check it out  ::)

I went to check the book in the Recommended tab and the other top books that people really enjoyed alongside this one are The Copper Promise, The Vagrant, The Greatcoats and Promise of Blood.

They seem so different from each other, but that's how the system works, I guess.

What is it with people on Goodreads?? Why are half the reviews basically starting with long resumes of the entire book? People can't see there is a satisfactory, professional blurb at the top? Do they not see that after reading the same rehashed but unprofessional and mildly spoilery version of the same blurb again and again, a reader might just skip their comment?

I get you'd want to start with a blurb before your critic on a normal blog, but on goodreads it's starting to do my head in..
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: Lanko on May 27, 2016, 02:45:52 AM
I noticed that too. I read one review yesterday that used ten paragraphs to explain the two paragraphs blurb. Then finally proceeded to tell what he liked or not in the book.

Surprisingly, when I was reading the SPFBO reviews, a lot of the blogs that reviewed did the same thing and they are paid professionals. Why does this happen...
I don't mind some passages from a book used without spoiler tags, sometimes it's useful and funny to see them and so far I didn't come across anybody that revealed something major without a spoiler tag. But yea, that would be super annoying.
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: ultamentkiller on May 27, 2016, 08:11:47 PM
Is it because they think the blurb doesn't do it justice, so they want to describe it better? *shrugs*

My favourite is when they decide to write veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy long reviews using entirely gifs. Now I'm quite a fan of gifs, but they use shit ones. And over-using them all in one go is a no no in my book. Especially when you're supposed to 'write' a review not gif a review damn it!

Because you read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Goodreads recommends Kushiel's Dart.

Quote
Phèdre is trained equally in the courtly arts and the talents of the bedchamber, but, above all, the ability to observe, remember, and analyze. Almost as talented a spy as she is courtesan, Phèdre stumbles upon a plot that threatens the very foundations of her homeland. Treachery sets her on her path; love and honor goad her further. And in the doing, it will take her to the edge of despair... and beyond. Hateful friend, loving enemy, beloved assassin; they can all wear the same glittering mask in this world, and Phèdre will get but one chance to save all that she holds dear.

Quote
In an effort to be totally upfront about what Kushiel’s Dart is and isn’t, let me get this out of way – there’s a lot of sex.  Some of it’s pretty graphic.  There’s rape and torture and the main character enjoys both on some level.

The protagonist is Phedre, a courtesan trained for sex in a culture where the motto is Love As Thou Wilt.  Phedre as it turns out is also the first anguisette (read likes to get beat up) in three generations to be available for pay to play.  She’s bought by a disgraced nobleman named Delaunay who trains her to be a bedroom spy in his game of thrones (pardon the euphemism GRRM).

@Lanko (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40739)  The GR programme for recommendations is laughing at us all. ;D ;D

@Nora (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40237) completely agree about reviews that repeat the summary and it annoys me no end. Not just on GR it happens often on Amazon and even Audible as well. Stop reading straightaway. Don't think I have ever been guilty only referring obliquely for reason of comment. Call me out anyone please if you catch me.

I've just read Kushiel's Dart and it's nothing like Harry Potter.

It is a good book but because it's 900 pages long the first 200 drag and there's less sex scenes then you think from reading the blurb and there don't really last that long its more of a spy intrigue novel with a tiny dash of romance mixed in.I think if people were looking for an erotic romance there be disappointed.I would recommend this to GGK fans as that's who I thought of when reading it.

One can ever have enough bookish friends :)
I do enjoy dark books - but not all of them. I never disliked a book because of it's being dark yet, I usually have some other problem with it.

Lawrence - I simply hated the main character too much to enjoy the story
Abercrombie - I loved plot and characters, but the writing style was not mine (felt too modern for that story to me)
Fletcher - Eagerly waiting for the German version, love the idea, but the English version is unreadable for a German speaker...

I will see what I can find on your shelves to try! Always on the lookout for new books :)

Goodreads has a beta version up of a new homepage!

Covers are much bigger, with a better resolution.

Profile pictures also had their size increased (Bea said she wants to do the same here  ::))

Better visual and design on comments.

Community and Browsing are still the same but will probably improve as well!

I'm the opposite, I have a great average : 4.03

Or maybe it just means that I record and remember the books I loved well, and tend to not rate anything when a book goes DNF. If I gave 1 star to half my DNF, 2 to the ones I just abandoned for no reason, then my average surely would be lower.

My average rating is 3.37 , I might be a bit harsh on my ratings anyone lower?

I think this just means you are more willing/likely to take a chance on a 'maybe' book than most of us   :)
... although now I've succumbed to kindle unlimited I will probably see my average drop a bit over the next few months as I start taking a few chances on some less well reviewed novels.
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: Lady Ty on June 11, 2016, 06:09:12 AM
My average is 4.24 for 794 ratings. I have been generous in the past but trying to be little stricter lately.

Also rate them for how they compare within their own type, as well as how much I enjoyed them. Meaning a good lightweight shorter book would get the same rating as a more serious long one, if they were both good of their type.
Title: Re: Goodreads
Post by: ultamentkiller on June 11, 2016, 07:40:45 AM
186 ratings (3.85 avg)

Probably because most books that fall below a 3.5, I'm not willing to finish so I don't even rate them.

Two possibilities:
1. unlock the topic and you can edit the post
2. make you a mod for the General Discussion Subboard

I can do both but don't think it's my place to grant modding powers and giving you those just for one purpose seems to be a bit over the top (I'm not saying you are unfit for modding in general, mind).
There probably is a reason why the master list is locked and that is that we don't want people to post in that topic to keep it clearly. I could reopen it and then delete every post somebody makes there (and if the post contains a goodreads account add it) to solve this. Thoughts?

I remember Arry saying that I should be able to edit that list because I was the "topic creator", even if it was locked and pinned.

But thinking now, I actually didn't create a topic, that list was a post on this very thread and she cut it from here and pinned it as a thread, so maybe that's the cause for me being unable to edit, since the "original creator" of the whole thread was not me.

I wonder if I create a topic from zero with the list would solve it. Should I create a new topic to test this theory?
Or just simply have people wait for a mod to add them eventually.

Yes. :) Going to bed now, though...

If it helps, I know that even though I can modify posts in the Writing Contest section, if a thread is locked I must unlock it first (otherwise the 'modify' button doesn't even appear)

Edit: oh, I just checked: even if you started the thread, you can't lock it. So if it's locked, it was done by a mod, and a mod must unlock it before you update the post (and then lock it back again).

Yea, it doesn't work. It's fine, though, we will just eventually put new names there, it's not like the world is gonna end if someone doesn't enter the list right away  ::)

I had hoped it would work, didn't know for sure if it would. What we could do, is maybe unlock it, but remove any comments that get made. It might actually be a quicker way to maintain the list if people reply to it with their info, it gets added to the top. After you've updated you can send @xiagan and myself a message or report the posts and we can clean them out.

That way we can try to keep it clean like it is, as opposed to the pages and pages of replies the other one has. We could also lock and unsticky the other one and add notes/links to the first and last post redirecting to the new one. If we went this route, we would have to clearly state comments would be removed (something we don't normally do here)

Any opinions on this idea? We normally don't remove comments, so this is a departure. Since the thread's purpose is to let people connect on goodreads rather than discussion, maybe it's ok? It's not a route I would want to go without support of the members. It would prevent any side comments about people's accounts as well. Perhaps we don't lock the other one for that reason? Or just create a new one? Or maybe I'm over complicating it?

Re-reading has been added to Goodreads! @Lady_Ty , @cupiscent, @Peat

I remember we talked about this on the Year in Books thread and tricks to do it, but now it's official.

I am pretty pleased about that. Just when I'm contemplating a re-read of Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle as well.

I'm reading a book and it says it's my second time reading it but it's only my first time, can I reset it somehow to one?

Try this: Click on the book's title, then scroll down a little and there will be the My Activity. On the top-right side of this part there will be a button Edit.
Click it and probably erase the rereading date, even if there's no date set.

There isn't a Twitter thread (or I don't know where it is), but I think this might interest those who use it a lot (I don't):

Now, when you reply to someone or a group, those @usernames won’t count toward your Tweet’s 140 characters.

Just did a very short review to a book last night and woke up and had six likes from non friends who have never read the book in question and I don't know them ,found it a bit strange.

So I found out something cool!

I managed to create a DNF shelf, and it doesn't automatically add it to my read. Which is great!
Just create a new shelf, then edit it, and mark it as exclusive. It's super easy!

I'm using Goodreads more actively now (including the reading challenge to spur me to read more), so I would be happy to friend people there for recommendations etc.

Hello!

I use Goodreads all the time as both an author and a reader. I'm always looking for recommendations so feel free to add me. I also do the yearly reading challenge and recommend it if you haven't already signed up for it there.

You can find my profile here--> https://www.goodreads.com/JonRay (https://www.goodreads.com/JonRay).

Funny, I started a thread about GR and now months of being inactive I actually forgot how to usei it.

How do I make DNF'ed books to not appear at My Year in Books as read? I even made the DNF shelf and made it exclusive, yet it still appears there.
