Kings of Convenience - I'd rather dance with you

Saw those guys yesterday in a small concert trying out songs for their new album. First time Julia and me have been on a concert together in the last two years! :)

These are my current writing-themes, which share a certain intensity and a balance between the resolute and the melancholy. My enjoyment / use of them has nothing at all to do with their source material - in fact, I don't think about their sources at all.

I literally listen to them whenever I am thinking, writing, or otherwise have my mind bent on my WIP - which is close to 24/7.

Since this thread doesn't have enough metal in it, I recently picked up Allegaeon's new album. Pretty damn epic, if you enjoy thrash metal. Best description I can offer is Amon Arath meets Opeth ... good stuff.

Their full album is on Youtube if want a preview (but if you like it, buy it!)

And one of my favorite songs actually has a significant acoustic portion as well, which is really fun. Plus the video is actually fun (I like when one of the guys is feeding another a peanut and butter jelly sandwich while he plays guitar :p)

My latest inspirational discovery: Zack Hemsey. This song isn't actually on the Equalizer soundtrack, although it would fit there.  It captures just the right amount of slow realization, slow awakening, and slow rejection I want my MC to experience as he comes into his own.

I thought I'd post something probably no-one here has heard of. No, I'm not being a hipster. Drýsill was a short-lived Icelandic metal band in the eighties.

I don't know how to post videos but let's see if I get it right. Anyway, I love an almost dead form of music called Delta Blues that was found in the Mississippi River Delta and played by blacks back at the turn of the 20th century. Blues then morphed to become similar to what we have now when bluesmen moved to Chicago following job leads in the 1940s and 50s. Here are three tracks from the man who sold his soul to the Devil to play guitar, Robert Johnson. To me, music doesn't get any better.

There are anime openings I generally skip after the first few times, and then there are anime openings that I will watch literally every time I watch an episode, even if I'm binging them. These are five (make that six) of those. They just do such a good job of pairing music and imagery to encapsulate the tone and attitude of the show I'm about to watch.

Short but sweet.

The Sound of Silence is just pure awesomeness.

And how about the Call of Cthulhu by Metallica on their symphonic album in 1999? Perfect, and everything from 7:00 onwards is even more awesome, specially the solo at 7:50

And then I found this version of Nothing Else Matters during a marriage!  :o

Apparently it's a TV program in Finland where the couple chooses a finnish artist to sing on their marriage and they choose Tarja Turunen to sing a cover of Nothing Else Matters. Wow. But apparently their families don't like rock  ::)

More for the sake of making people discovering the instrument than anything, lend your ear to the Armenian duduk, a breathy flute that has amazing mournful notes.
The first track could be sad, healing, or good with magic... The second to me brings more of an arabian night feel, but I really love the instrument :

And a literary aside... This guy tried something really cool. We don't know exactly how to pronounce ancient sumerian, but with what we have of it, and using an instrument of the day, this dude things the beginning of the most ancient piece of literature known to man, The Epic of Gilgamesh.
It always sends shivers down my spine when I hear him begin. I mean, it's as close as we get to hear the work of one of ours, writing FOUR THOUSAND YEARS AGO.

The dude specialises in reconstructing ancient historically correct instruments of all civilisations. Interesting for the curious.

Just check out the mad playing of this old greek instrument, early electric guitar feel, 3000 years early.

Cool music if you like synth/electronic, and enjoy action movie music.

This track is one of my favourite in John Wick :

The scene in itself was epic. He was chasing his russian target in the underground sauna of this big club, and follows him up to the dancefloor. Great editing went into that. (many, not too graphic headshots, best way is to watch from 2min to 4min)

Much more synth now, this is from the movie Drive :

This one has great music but also won a 2015 award for best dance video

A superbly absurd song. Apparently it's featured in the second season of Mr.Robot, but I haven't watched it.

Finally, on the theme of corpses, ghosts... Awesome video to watch with the audio :

I want to take the title thread quite literally here.

There's an upcoming multiplayer video game based on the Friday the 13th series, where one players controls Jason Voorhees, and the other players are campers trying to survive the night. The band Crazy Lixx wrote an original song for the game, and it feels just perfectly 80's. Here's a video, with some footage of Mr. Voorhees going about his business.

We used to sing this (violently) at Lancastrians when I was playing at Wars of the Roses.
The origins are ancient and it has been linked to the peasants revolt ans possibly to sacrifice of the year king.

I may be about to expose what a total softie I really am, but... is there a song that really digs past all your defences and stabs you right in your unprotected heart? This one is mine. I guess it might require context, what with this being from the end credits of Transistor, an indie-developed video game whose storyline hits your feels like a goddamn wrecking ball. But, personally, this song just makes me so distressingly aware of my mortality, and the things I have yet to accomplish in life, that I don't know why I keep coming back to it.

But I do.

I think fan-made videos can be amazing for fellow fans, or at least anyone familiar with the subject matter. Gifted fans can display a great talent for getting to the heart of the appeal of a particular work.

This one is a tribute to the Daleks from Doctor Who, and makes the point that, in spite of being horrifying space supernazis they really are tragic figures:

So, I finally watched/listened to all the songs in here (though not all the way through in all cases, I have to admit. There are a lot of songs  :) ).
And though I still don't really know if there is some unwritten rule to this thread and the songs in it (I'm kind of embarrassed to ask but, why Friday Night?), I couldn't see any clear correlation from one song to another (other than people enjoying them), so I thought I would add a few to the list.

I saw a lot of metal enthusiast here... You are most likely going to really like or hate this/me.  ???

If you have heard of this band, you have probably heard this song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIKqgE4BwAY

Not everyone's cup of tea. I fully understand that.
But I hope you don't judge them without listening to some of their other songs. (There is a lot of variety in their repertoire.) Here's something from their second album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTEYUFgLveY

The girls, and the guys backing them, are really good at what they do and have worked really hard to get where they are now, but there are a lot of people on the internet who belittle and even insult the band and the people listening to them by saying they are not metal or that they are not a real band or that they are a gimmick whose music is meant for weirdos/pedophiles.
That makes me sad...  :(
but then I listen to one of their songs and start smiling again.
Honestly, this band is the best (natural) antidepressant I have found.  ;D

Now I feel like I have too much text in this post, considering the thread... Well, here's another song, with a show of mastery from the backing band members in the beginning and after that a solo from the lead singer (the little ones are taking a well-earned break):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxYAcIyk2Co

Poop, it's Saturday here already. I missed my window.

Well, f-it!
*posts the message anyway*
 ;)

Hi AAV  ;D Good to hear from you. I think it began as Friday Night because it was an end of the week relax thread, but it has been known to have middle of week posts as well.

I think that band and group is amazing, no doubt they must have worked so hard their act is spot on perfect, even though they are very young. Already done so much work overseas as well as recordings and shows.Checked them out online and found they've opened for Lady Gaga as well as in concerts with Metallica. Thanks for bringing them here. :)

I think it began as Friday Night because it was an end of the week relax thread, but it has been known to have middle of week posts as well.
Thanks! That's what I thought. But sometimes (read: almost always) I get this nagging feeling that I'm not understanding something correctly, and I end up dropping the matter rather than look stupid asking about it or doing something wrong. It's quite debilitating.  ::)

But anyway...
I promise not to do this every week, but since my last week's post, a few things have happened concerning BABYMETAL. (Spoilered for people who don't care.  :) )
1. Their youtube channel reached 1 million subscribers. (Pretty good for a channel that uploads videos very rarely.)
2. A promo clip of Cartoon Network's new show Unikitty! was released/leaked, with theme song by BABYMETAL. (Basically a few seconds of "pa-pa-paa", but hey, new music from them.  :) )
3. They (and their fans, I suppose) won the "Most dedicated fans" award from Loudwire Awards. (I read that they won 5 awards last year but were only nominated for this one this year. Open online voting, if you were wondering.  ;) )

Small achievements but worthy of some celebratory music, I feel. This is one of my favourite songs by them, if not musically then at least thematically and dance/show-wise (though even musically, tbh). It's about playing hide-and-seek (or blind man's buff) with an Oni-demon.  :o (This video has lyrics/translations even though I usually find them distracting from the music.)
"Catch Me if You Can" with a backing band (Kami-band) intro:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ng8U_j0gpLI

Okay, sorry about that.  :)
Here's some less "heavy" music from another Japanese band, SCANDAL. Not really the best song to showcase them because it is sung by the lead guitarist and not the lead vocalist, but it's a fun song and, I feel, it fits this forum (or maybe my relationship with the forum and the people here, kind of  ??? ;D ). This needs the translated lyrics, so that what I just said makes any sense.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIJqJJuOKxM

I write way too much text on these post.

But hey, I stop now...
...at least for a few weeks.  ;)

I've never considered myself much of a musical fan but good music is good music, and there is something to be said for a song that tells a story. I've been listening to some of the songs from the Jekyll and Hyde musical, and they're quite good.

Nah Morrisey is too depressing for me. 30 years of being an angst ridden teen is fairly impressive though.

I nearly posted this one, which I have posted before.

About 20 years ago I saw a fairly mediocre movie, that had a very memorable end title sequence. I recently found the song:

Okay, in all seriousness, here is an Icelandic lay, put in a song that sort of mixes old with new.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QszJG0sYZE

(Granted, it's about a giant, man-eating cat that prowls around during the Christmas season, but that is legitimate Icelandic folklore.)

Another holiday-related one from Iceland!

... this one about Grýla, the child-eating ogress; possibly the most notable figure in Icelandic folklore.

(Yes, our folklore tends towards grimness.)

It's not Friday but...
Are you sure? You probably know what's coming.
It's BABYMETAL related.
Oh. Still? Well, okay.
Happy 20th birthday, Suzuka Nakamoto (aka SU-METAL)!  :)

Let's hear the birthday girl sing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGJunhe9S2w
(Would have gone with a more recent performance but they keep getting blocked on Youtube. And I wouldn't want you to suffer the pain that is dailymotion (, at least without adblocker). But hey, she knew how to sing even back when she was 16.)

Okay. So that I wouldn't seem like "a one song band", or "a one band song"  ??? in this case, or "a broken record" or something like that, here's a playlist full of classic Christmas songs (classic at least in Finland) with a twist:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWFFDWVgzK0&list=PL91k-V8EjkgDX1Ac5zY8623YR3sim2gpV&index=1

Heavy Christmas, everyone!  ;D

It is not Friday! But whatever.

Folks, I ****ing love the new song from A Perfect Circle. Granted, I'm a huge fan of both them (and Tool) but this may be my favorite song they've done. Really looking forward to their new album.

The thing about this song that made me want to share it on this forum? I think it's like ... if grimdark was music. It's a grimdark song, and I know we have lots of members who enjoy that genre. Anyway, give it a listen!

Solomun - The Way Back:

format B - gospel (super flu's antichrist remix) - This one is the best type of driving tracks.

Something must darker, from a French DJ, Da Octopus - Vult

I thought I'd shared a few songs too, but I have a question: are we meant to post here only on Fridays or can we do that anytime?

Anyway, here's a few ones.

First is "The Song of Durin" made by a family YouTube channel. They're called Clamavi de Profundis and make really awesome songs if you ask me:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8PSFN2r6bXY

Second is a 13th Century Middle High German song called "Das Palästinalied" written by Walther von der Vogelweide:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L2UBQArOa5c

Finally, here are a few verses of the Norse text "Völuspa" sung by Einar Selvik, whose interpretation is absolutely stunning:

Now you should all know what kind of songs I'm mostly interested in  :D

So there's this Lifetime TV show that got picked up by Netflix about a stalker.  I heard about it in the news b/c apparently tons of thirsty girls are tweeting about how they'd like to be stalked by that guy b/c he's cute and the actor is like WTF I play a psychopath and a murderer.  Anyway I'm not going to watch it, since having been stalked idk if I can handle watching it on TV, but the trailer keeps showing up on netflix and they've got a super dark, creepy, cinematic cover of "I want you to want me" that starts about 20 seconds in.  I'm really loving the song.

I make ice cream. The mix is a very small department in relation to the rest of the factory. So despite the company still recruiting and having an issue with sickness and absenteeism we have time and motion people in with us for the next 3 weeks, presumably to say how many jobs can be cut...

Wow.  I had no idea how cut-throat ice cream could be!  Those bastards.

You should rob a bank and use all your ice cream wizardry to open up an artisinal gelato shoppe with all sorts of weird flavors where hipsters can mix their own ice cream by riding on a bicycle.

Think more industrial process than hipster fuel. This I do as it pays well and pays overtime unlike most of the proper jobs I have been chasing.
