Can I just show my age and say that I thought a meme was a replicating idea (as in biology), instead of (as I apparently am seeing) images/photos with silly sayings? :-[

So when I entered this thread I was expecting to see fantasy subjects replicated through different books: for example someone would say "benign wizard" and then we'd list the books where they appear (LotR, HP, Belgariad) or where they're subverted (First Law).

Meme has been co-opted by the social net to be just what you see.

Meanwhile, there are some fascinating science fiction treatments of memes as mental viruses (ideas, not biology). But mostly we get icanhas.cheezburger.com/lolcats.

This sounds interesting!

But you won't see me clicking a lolcat link. Ever :P I barely put up with 'normal' cat pictures (although I admit Raptori's avatar is cute :D)

Well, image memes are really just a specific special case of memes. Because most of the times they are the same joke repeated over and over with miniscule variations. Many show up only once or twice and never get a hold in the public consciousness (and go extinct), while others are extremely well suited for massive spread. And they are kept fresh and do not get forgotten and boring by constantly undergoing slight mutations.

Not My Business Bilbo is a mutation of Not My Business Kermit.

And if you know Philosoraptor you would also recognize the Philosoflumph (who asks paradoxical questions about fantasy roleplaying games):
