Title: Eurovision Song Contest 2015; 2016; 2017, 2018, 2019
Post by: Lady Ty on May 19, 2015, 09:34:01 AM
Have you all realised that Australia has moved to Europe nowadays?
Well we hopped over(Hahahahaha) and were invited to compete in Eurovision Song Contest 2015. Promise no Skippy's in song, and our introduction lady, Lee Lin Chin is a rare and precious treasure so hopefully you will be exposed to some of her sharp wit.

I believe we get it streamed live at 5.00 am on our Sunday morning and  am willing to be sacrifice sleep  if some of you are around to join in here. Is the Final in Europe on Saturday night?

So, anyone game for a Song Contest Party? If you have better things to do I quite understand, but Australia adores it and it is so much fun. Especially as we have Guy Sebastian singing for us. I have always liked him but some people here have been sniffy about him representing us so am hoping he does well and they get a big comeuppance. 8)  ;)
Any takers?

Yes, It's on Saturday night. Here in Finland it starts at a slightly more reasonable time, 22:00 (or 10 pm). The first semifinal is today, though. (Well tomorrow morning for Aussies.)

I'll probably watch it, so I might join in.

It's quite funny that Australia is competing in the contest. I guess you "mates" were so in to it that the ones in charge of the contest thought, "Why not", and stretched the definition of Europe a little (just a little).  ;D   But yeah, I'm glad you got the chance to participate.

If you don't mind me asking, Lady Ty, what is it about the Eurovision Song Contest that draws you in? Surely it can't be the songs (because most of them are just awful).

I'm only asking because I really can't explain to myself why I watch it year after year. ???   I suppose, it's just my dark little secr... I mean, a (strange) habit of mine. ;)

I like the Skippy song... :(

Ok, I was watching it, but just gave up after nine songs... The Portuguese commentator speaking on top of Conchita is unbearable, always saying awful things about each song (as if ours was any good).

I don't understand how Eurovision is such a big deal in Australia, must be all that heat burning away your sanity  :D

The times we watched it, it was with friends and lots of alcohol - or with a horde of small children. Both makes the contest very entertaining.  :D

Hmm...  :-\   Maybe I need to start drinking? Or get children? Or get friends?  ???   Nah, too much work. I think I just watch it as always, alone or with my family, and "enjoy" it in a less entertaining way.  ;) ;D

Thank you for all replies, so glad some will be watchingtoo.  @ArcaneArtsVelho (http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=40090) my family are away just now I'll be watching on my own, but plenty off yum treats to eat and drink because it's the perfect  excuse  to indulge ;D. Having trouble trying to watch all semi final and practices but will be there for final and keep this thread open as well as twitter which will probably break down from overuse. We can even vote from here if I can work out how, we never could do that before of course.

Several reasons Australians like Eurovision, main one being we are such multicultural nation. Nearly every country represented will have some Australians who originated from that country there or whose family came from there earlier. Hard to know proportions but many many from UK countries, then Greece, Italy, Germany, who migrated after WW2 , later Macedonia, Croatia, Albania, Serbia, Yugoslavia after their FYR broke up, quite lot from Middle East and also a few from Scandinavia, France, Spain and Portugal. Probably not any or very few from the ex USSR countries.

Lots of people hold parties with friends and family, nobody expects it to be brilliant but we laugh with them all,  not at them, and like how much they all throw themselves into the whole thing. The costumes are amazing and the stage sets OTT and we have no idea what many of the words are, it is just funny and so happy.

Hey, that must be it: I have conditioned myself to watch the contest with candy, potato chips/crisps and soda.  ;D

Yeah, that seems like a valid reason.

I suppose one of the charms of the contest is that everyone involved in it is so (overly?) positive and excited. Some of that enthusiasm rubs off even on people watching it home. And I have to admit that sometimes the shows are quite spectacular with all those lights and pyrotechnics, and the huge screens as the stage and backdrop. 8)

So, come the final I'll be here. However, I hope you don't expect me to make very in-depth comments on every single performance, because I'm very slow to post things (with all my indecision and spelling, grammar, and idiom checking).  ;) ;D

I'll be making bacon and egg sandwich for early breakfast and hope I'll wake up in time, and take notice of alarm ;D
Watched the repeat of semi final 1 last night and really sorry Finland's Punk Band, PKN,  didn't get in. They may not have won but their song was so impressive about how regimented their lives were made to be and how it fitted the Building Bridges Theme to make us understand things better. I still remember the year Lordi came and I'm not a Hard Rock enthusiast but it was brilliant to see how different they were to all the ballads that predominated then and just loved the costumes.

I quite liked Hungary and Russia, but it moved on fast so I'm not certain. Also enjoyed the costumes certainly plenty of variety, think a drinking game on cloaks and capes  would be a success. ;D   Fantasy stereotype costumes creeping in everywhere these days ;D ;D The lighting and stage are so huge, lighting full on, I 'm not sure I would like to be there, bit overwhelming.

Don't worry about detailed comments, it moves along very quickly. Mine will be irregular and almost one word, but it's fun to know someone else is watching and we can at least "chat" now and then. Will watch the repeat of second semi final this evening and see who else is going to be on it's really grown huge nowadays.

Finland's act wasn't really my cup of tea, but it was good that their song had a real message. It would seem that combating ignorance, indifference, and intolerance through the songs and performances is a thing in the contest, at least nowadays (can't remember has it always been that way, because I didn't really pay attention to such things when I was young  ??? ).

Russia and Hungary were good and there were couple others I liked, but i think the 2nd semifinal had more good acts than the 1st.

Wow! The only way you can get that many people to gather in a public square in Portugal is during the final football game for the World Cup, or when Benfica wins the national championship of football.

As for Eurovision, only the LGBT community seem to really invest their time into it nowadays, mainly because Portugal's participation is always dreadful and everyone else has just given up.

Now getting more coffee before we go through the agony of results , always sorry for those countries that get less and less.

So, your five favorites are: Hungary, Russia, Norway, Sweden and...?

I think mine are (not necessarily in this order): Sweden, Hungary, UK, Estonia and Latvia.
Maybe... I'm still not sure. :-\

Sorry, no Australia in my top five. ;)

He has done far far better songs and performances in past. We seem to have chosen some favourites and my forgetting Swedendoesn't matter plenty others voted. Wondering how Oz votes will end up

Seems like Sweden took it. And yes, UK isn't doing well, nor is Hungary.

I think Australia did OK, but yeah, there might have been some "courtesy votes" in there.
There have been rumours that Australia would be accepted as a regular participant, so maybe you get another chance. :)

I've never understood the appeal of Eurovision down here. I do wonder if it had something to do with Julia Zemiro's hosting on SBS, always loved her on Rockwiz. Technically Guy's not the first Australian to compete. Olivia Newton John represented Great Britain, and although she was born in the UK, she moved to Australia when was 6, and has always been recognised as an Aussie. Guy really should have sung the Vegemite song. I think that may be a winner.

You mean you and Lejays weren't out in Federation Square at 4.30am this morning, Elfy? I am so surprised ;)

Afraid Julia Zemiro made me very annoyed this morning, she talked over the top of the official hosts when scores were coming in and made rather snarky comments on clothes and styling all the way through. Not impressed with her or Sam Pang.

Johnny Logan, two-time Irish winner of the contest (well three if you count the song he composed), was born in Australia. And there have been some others with Australian background. And I believe Guy wasn't even born in Australia. ;)

And, no, I'm not a walking encyclopedia of Eurovision song contest; the Finnish commentators brought all this to my attention. ;D

Ah, but you do have some things to learn still about the secret tongue. Not "arope", but "opare". It's based on sound, not spelling.  ;D

Oh if I'm at home and not watching it somewhere else I will definitely, it's one of my favourite twitter nights as well :P I wouldn't like to watch Eurovision without it now.

Ah yea cos they owe them debts, hilarious. Eurovision sent round their boys to remind them to pay up, but they couldn't afford it so...

Yeah, it was close to 15 million euros iirc. That's just an insane amount of money to owe to a non profit organisation.  :o

Idk about this though, cos they're not allowed live animals or nudity on stage at Eurovision so...

Also heard France's song on the radio, surprisingly good, quite up beat and happy pop song.

Thought I heard the Ivan one was just to grab attention and that the actual song would be quite ordinary once on stage (ordinary for Eurosong standards).
Meanwhile I wonder what my own country is sending. I should check it out...

I heard the UK entry last night on The Graham Norton Show, with Joe and Jake, and my first reaction was "Bridge Over Troubled Waters"- anyone else hear that at the start?

Which is strange because Australia's entry is called Sound of Silence and to me relies heavily on Simon and Garfunkel. Not sure I like it simply because of that.

My musical appreciation is abysmal so don't hesitate to tell me I'm nuts. ;)

I'm not really getting that many Simon and Garfunkel vibes from those (apart from the name of the Australian song), but then again, I'm not super familiar with S&G's work (even though I know they have some very good songs). In any case, I wouldn't call you nuts.  :)

I don't think the Australian song is bad, but the "sound of silence" gets repeated quite a lot. That really shouldn't bother me though, because I quite like our song (Sing It Away) and in it the song title gets repeated probably even more.  ;D

The UK song feels like a pretty average pop song to me.  :-\   Not really digging it.

The Australian girl has a really good voice, until she starts shouting with that generic thumping Euro beat in the background, then it gets rather typical. It'll do well though I'm sure, same with Russia, which sounds like they created a computer program to generate the most conventional and stereotypical Eurovision song winner and went, good enough!

The UK's is fine, but that's it. 10 points would be a good reward for that, blame all their stupid teen fans from The Voice who voted for them to win...

Let's hope everyone hates Russia still so that won't happen :D

Jmack, it's the annual Song Contest again and although Oz isn't in Europe it is always broadcast live here and has huge following, see earlier in thread re our multicultural population.

We were invited first as a guest and then to actually compete last year and again this year, so may be permanent competitor. The winning country hosts the next contest, so this is what prompted ScarletBea's question-

Yeah, but I don't see everybody travelling to Australia next year, do you?

Much as we'd love to see you all, you won't need to come downunder, this is from the official website-

Quote
In case Australia wins the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, the 2017 contest will be co-hosted by Australian broadcaster SBS and another European public broadcaster, somewhere in Europe.

I'd hoped it would happen here, but I  know it wouldn't be fair :(

It was so wonderful when we had the Sydney Olympics and the whole world seemed to descend on our country, it was exciting and we were really in the spirit of it all. My daughter was close to having my first grandson and we did a 3.00 am dash to the hospital, when Olympics had begun and we had to detour because the usual roads were closed ready for a marathon, my poor son in law was terrified we wouldn't make it, but we did.

Still Eurovsion not quite in same league as Olympics.

Although the only reason our entry won was because all their teen fans from when they were on The Voice voted for them to win.

I actually really liked this year's Eurovision (and that doesn't happen very often). I'm truely amazed. All entries were outstanding and (for some reason) felt like songs from 1980-1990. I say: YAY!

And I really liked Bellarus's entry. But we won't see themin finals.

Have anyone of you noticed, that this half was very "opera-like" while the earlier one from this year was more "pop" (i.e Cyprus felt like Imagine Dragons or something).

Well, I came here to start a Eurovision thread, but it seems you folks saved me the trouble.

I was just going to ask if anyone was planning on watching. Iceland goes absolutely insane over Eurovision every year, and it's hilarious to see how optimistic my countrymen get about our song every year.

Me, I haven't been the least bit interested since my teens. A couple of years in a row I happened to call my mom in the middle of the main event, because I'd just forgotten that it was on.

Now I call her every year, on purpose, out of tradition.

She doesn't appreciate it.  ;D

4.16am I made it early, heater and TV on, kettle boiling and just about to get toast going. Hi Eli, so glad you're joining in the more the merrier. Couldn't manage the semi finals but checked out some of the favoutites on YOu-tube last night and not sure who I  like to be honest. I miss the old Eurovision a bit, it's gone all hi tech and flashy, Remember one year there were milkmaids or similar and fun ideas. my favourite year was when Lordi won, thught they were amazing.

Sorry no Finland in Finals, this year. Good morning AAV, glad Iwasn't  :Dlate.

Not necessarily a fan of Oz being there, it was fun as a guest and once as an invited competitor last yer, but a bit embarrassed as we really aren't Europe. Dammi Im is pretty good but it's yet another flashy show. She won The Voice I believe but I gave up on that a while back.

Managed to get to 4.23am now but still not on my TV yet. Most people will be watching and partying to a TV repeat at 7.30 pm tonight. There are a few die hards who breakfast party because they're impatient like me and have European family connections.

Back after toast. ;D

Embarrassed. :-[

The scoring from juries still to come , think these first votes were from  the phone votes no Igot it wrong think that was juries. I am seriously wondering if Oz is a politically 'safe' vote for some countries .

I'm surprised that Poland took the 8th place - such a nice surprise, I must say. :3
I'm also glad that Ukraine won, although Australia's victory could be groundbreaking since it's a non-European country competing in Eurovision.

I actually enjoyed it altogether it was fun and there were quite a few catchy songs reminiscent of the old style Eurovision, but definitely much high glitz and light display this year.

It was hard to follow the scoring this year, Henry, it was very different. The juries seemed to have to add their full 12 points to just one country and then the viewers phone votes added to just one country. No idea how they worked phone votes must have been some kind of percentage system. Anyway, glad we did well for you.

I believe the phone votes were done just like the jury votes, but they were added up offscreen so that they could show the points one country at a time to make it interesting until the very end.

Either way I can imagine Russia isn't too happy with the results as they have a territory dispute with Ukraine.
Will they participate when the contest is organized by an enemy next time?

Bit shocked that it is this time of year again already. Eurovision is always good for entertainment, laughter, singing along at home on your own and wondering what on earth will they wear or choose as props this year.  ::)

There will be at least two regular fans watching the Final live and commenting now and then here on the Forum, so if anyone else wants to check in and comment you will be most welcome.   ;D

Haven't watched the semi finals yet, so may come to the Final fresh like ScarletBea. We have a seventeen year old singer, Isaiah Firebrace, and I hope he does well. I think he has a beautiful voice and it will get even better with time, but not sure about the song itself.
Good to have you there @ScarletBea. I will be eating early breakfast. ;D

Ah, yes. That whole business.

I think I can safely say that no nation is more passionate about Eurovision than Iceland. It it always a time of bizarre optimism, followed by crushing disappointment.

Meanwhile, I think I can safely say that no Icelander is less passionate about the whole thing than I am. I haven't paid attention to it since my teens. A couple of years in a row I happened to phone my mother during the middle of the finals, as I had forgotten that they were on that night. She didn't really appreciate that. So now every year I deliberately call her during the finals, for the sake of tradition. Because that's just my sense of humour.  ;D

I don't feel guilty any more, because I discovered we didn't get Semi Final 1 until last night and I watched after all. Semi final 2 is this evening and I will try and stay up long enough and then get up for Final. So hopefully I will have some idea of my favourites. I have 2 countries ahead so far.

Very crazy hair, suitable for epic fantasy, and half naked men, possibly also suitable for epic fantasy, seem to be popular themes this year. :o ::)

Plus fire, water and glitzy light shows. Shall need many snacks to survive tomorrow. ;D ;D

I'm for Portugal and Belgium, plus the whacky yodeling song. Italy might grow on me. And there's a nice folky tune from... Belarus? Not sure - man and woman. Video shows them walking through a wood filled with fallen leaves.

Meanwhile there's an arrogant snot from Sweden. Yeah, 30th please.

And finally, the lovely irony of the lyrics in Britain's entry.

I did. And their pre-song "postcard"-introduction was a big secret because it revealed that she was pregnant.

Can't say that I'm the biggest fan of Moldova or Armenia but Hungary was surprisingly good despite of the song's repetitiveness. Not sure about Italy.  :-\

With Croatia, there is too much contrast for my taste between the pop and the opera singing.

Australia was much better now than it was in the semi-final.

Hmm? I don't know... maybe I was just having a bad day when I watched the 1st semi-final, because I though the quality of songs/performances over all was very poor in it.
But anyway, while the Belgian song wasn't bad, I feel it didn't really do justice to the singer's interesting voice. Same with Germany too, kind of.

I simply didn't like the Belgian entry. She didn't give me any emotion or anything as opposed to the other entries. It was just one of those one in a dozen songs with little memorability.

^ It was a good thought,  because I don’t know anything much about Portugal, except what you see on travel programmes and that is touristy. Hoping we’ll get more about the country and the real people in the lead up programmes to the finals.  You two are great examples of a happy people, so want to see more of your homeland. Even though @Saraband is probably wearing a kilt and eating haggis with neeps and tatties by now. :D

So sorry in wrong thread again and can’t copy paste. Please would a kind mod move it to Eurovision thread?

Haha you're very right about that ;D We will only get our first kilts for our wedding (we want to get some really good ones made, that will hopefully last us a lifetime), but we've rapidly become very Scottish in our day to day habits and routines, including a disturbing appreciation for Irn Bru and all kinds of deep-fried battered foods :P

I hope Eurovision does a good job of showing off Portugal - I'll probably only watch it for Graham Norton's live commentary though ;D

The semi-finals here are clashing with the beginning of 10th MasterchefAU, so only managing a quick flick in between ads. I am on my own at weekend so will do my best to turn up on time for the European finals. We have a lovely Aussie lady called Jessica Mauboy representing us and hope she does well. ;D

Oh bummer. I popped in here to see if anyone was watching/commenting when it started. But then I thought that why would anyone be watching the semi-finals and logged off.  ;D ::)

Then again, I watched it. :D   Well, at least I listened to it.
Don't really know what to say about the songs. I've been... let's say... musically distracted for the past couple of days, so yeah...
But I'm glad that the Finnish representative, Saara Aalto, made it to the final. She has a history of getting 2nd places in competitions, so let's see if she can break that streak and take the 1st place. Or... you know... the 3rd.  :P

I love her song, I think she was my favourite yesterday :D (and she's gorgeous :-[)

I can't understand the fuss about Israel except for the craziness...

And Cyprus was the local Beyonce, right? Earworm, though...

What do you think of the portuguese entry? It keeps growing on me

Did you like the hosts?
And how did the 'planet Portugal' translate abroad? He's a very famous local comedian who used to do those "David Attenburger" scenes ages ago, but not sure that foreigners understood the funny side.

I caught up last night with the first semi-final and glad Finland is in the final. We didn't see the Portuguese hosts, the breaks were filled in with the Australian hosts interviewing all the singers. The arena is great and seems it's more dark and shade with crazy lighting this year and less of the fire flashing I remember recently.

Because ABBA are getting back they have been re-capping them on that early Eurovision when they won with  Waterloo  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FsVeMz1F5c)and the contrast in staging in 1974 with nowadays is huge. It was so cosy, pretty, no drama and on a tiny stage. ;D

Think Sandy Shaw singing barefoot was one of the most publicised happenings and some objected as it was disrespectful. ::)

I liked the Portuguese entrant and then watched with translation and Ooooh  it was dedicated to her Grandmother. And then the words nearly made me cry - definitely big fan. ;) Were there lots of pink wigs around in the village ScarletBea?

I liked the entrant for Finland, AAV, plenty of drama there but a bit terrifying, so impressed she keeps singing when she spins around. ;)

I will watch the second semi final tonight and then be up to date. looking forward to the final.

Yeah, the Portuguese entry is pretty good. (Though I admit that I had to go and listen to it just now to remember it.  :-[ )

The hosts seemed ok, but then again I wasn't paying that much attention to them. I was, however, surprised to see that Daniela Ruah was one of them. Didn't know she was (or rather that her parents were) Portuguese.

I'm not going to lie, the Planet Portugal thing wasn't super funny to me. But, as a Eurovision song contest intermission funny bit, it was all right.  :)

I'm sorry for not paying enough attention to give better answers. As I said, I was (and I am even more now) distracted by (very silly/trivial and not at all serious) things. I may or may not write about it later. Probably not though, because it really is something quite silly when compared to all the serious issues of this world of ours.  :P

Nevertheless, I will try to watch the second semi-final tonight with the attention it requires.  ;)

But trouble is brewing from Deadpool (http://youtu.be/wLXtVf2YOr8) :o
OMG! That's amazing.  ;D
I, for one, welcome our new moose overlor... I mean Canada to the contest.  ;)

Well... if you insist:
I'm quite worried about a person (-more than I really should be). I'm also, in a way, worried about other people who are also worried about said person (many of whom are more worried about that person than I am). I'm also a bit worried about some people who are associated with that first person.
Oh, and I don't know any of these people personally.

How's that for silly/trivial, Bea?  ::) ;)

If someone wants to try to guess, what the hell it is that I'm talking about, feel free to send me a PM. I can't promise any prize for the winner, though.  ;D

Edit: Honestly, it's nothing.  :)   Didn't mean to blow it out of proportion earlier.

Whoops, I was supposed to be concentrating on the second semi-final.  :D

Finally caught up.  :D Now I have seen the Vikings and am impressed with Denmark entry.  Think I like Norway as well, but haven't heard the Big Five who are always in the final yet. My scribbly notes are rather like a first run at the writing contest " Yes No Maybe Hmm OMG Not really. "
Wow Russia didn't make it to final this year. And China has had TV rights withdrawn because they objected to a gay couple and the rainbow flag.

Pleased to see more of Lisbon and the Eurovision village at last and last night they brought a big trayful of your favourite pastries to Jess our singer and her crew, ScarletBea. That was so kind, and sent me looking for the recipe and think shall have to have a go soon.Is it Lisbon the home city of you or Saraband?

Really don't know who I want to win. But the idea floated around social media of voting for the UK to force it host a show celebrating Europe on the year it finally leaves the EU does seem appealing ;D

Replace "mobile" with heart and it makes sense  ;) I liked it, was a nice mix of Portuguese traditions, from moorish singing to fado. No clue who's going to win, I have no favourite this year, and just keeping slightly interested.

I appreciate the reminder. I have no interest in Eurovision, even though most Icelanders are obsessed with it. I am SO indifferent to it that a few years in a row I called mom in the middle of it simply because  I'd forgotten it was on.

Now I call her every year on purpose, as tradition. She doesn't appreciate it much.  :)

I'm not watching it after all :-[
At the same it's the final of BBC Young Dancer 2019, and I'm afraid to say it's much better/more interesting for me

Hah. No worries.  ;D
I'm not that into the contest either to be honest (though I always appreciate a good show). Watching it is just a very long tradition.

I think most mothers appreciate their sons calling them... even if their sons do it in jest.  ;)

Truly sorry couldn't join youand congrats for carrying on the tradition.
Sadly Australia has decided it prefers greed and blatant corruption to govern and I was in pieces last night. Going to listen to TP books for a while as recommended by a special friend, and pretend the real world is the fictional one.

@Lady Ty, I know it's a stupid thing to say (and in the wrong thread), but sometimes I feel that people don't deserve democracy ::)
Or maybe Australia saw the UK and the US going down the drain and wanted to join them? ;D

As for the Eurovision, we don't have any
dutch
members, so can't congratulate them ;D

As I said, I watched the Young Dancer competition and it was absolutely fantastic, any of the 5 finalists could have won and I'd be happy.

My whole life is spent looking at the middle east and wondering why the people there are saddled with these vile dictatorships while the English for some reason have democracy. There really is no justice in the world.

I first saw the Eurovision song contest last night. Bits of it, anyway. Though I was in a pub so I couldn't really hear anything. I thought the UK entry was not terrible. Then this morning I found out he came last. Must be pretty gutting for him, but I guess someone has to lose and I stopped supporting the UK in international events quite a while back.
