Advice for my first book giveaway :)
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:21:51 AM »
Hello all,

I'm about to arrange my first book giveaway on my blog. I would like to have your input on how to go about doing this. Just to make sure there is not something I have not thought about. Anything you can think of!

It will probably be a UK only giveaway, but I am not really sure how much the postage would be for the rest of the world.

:)

We've experimented with a few different ways of doing it... I suggest having people do *something* for it? Nothing major, but something fun... maybe a question or something that's associated with the book? (but doesn't require having read it)

Trading books for twitter follows & facebook follows doesn't work so well. It is better to have a good competition and encourage people to tweet / facebook about it...

Afternoons are a good time - especially Thurs & Friday afternoons. People at their desks are bored!

Oh, OK. I was just planning a boring email me for a book type of giveaway. Maybe I could ask an easy question. Something from my review. Worth thinking about :)

I did a few of them at my blog, and all I did was asked people to comment on something particular that was associated with one of the themes of the book. Then I used a random number generator to select the winner. :)

Good luck with it!

Ha! awesome! I loved The World House! *goes off to enter* :)
I'd like to do a book giveaway sometime too, I've got so many proofs I could send off. Will wait for more followers though, me thinks. :)

I just ask people to comment, and then choose winners using a random number generator - I give away two books each month (one fiction, one non-fiction). I also state clearly that it's EU-only - postage to Europe isn't much more than postage within the UK - and give a cut-off date. As long as you're not asking for money, you shouldn't fall foul of any gambling legislation, I think.

Good luck with the giveaway!

Thought I'd do a little report on my experiences from my first book give away.

Thanks to numerous RTs by the ever helping Twitter blogger community I managed to get roughly 200 page views on my giveaway post. I had a total of 5 responses which was a lot less than I thought to be honest. I probably did not do myself any favours by messing up the post in the first way. Some people struggled to get the email right and it should have been clearer from the start. To make matters worse I also forgot to make it clear that you should read my review of Restoration to find out who my favorite character was. I did at least manage to correct this. Lastly, Restoration is the second part in a series and I suspect it's best to avoid this. It should be a first in a series or a stand alone book.

I decided to make it a world wide competition and the winner was obviously Australian. Surprisingly, the postage was only around £4.50 which I think is OK.

I am not deterred, but I do appreciate that I at the moment don't really have enough readers to do book giveaways. I will try again though. I already have a couple of books in mind.

I haven't tried one myself yet.  There's a fine line between using giveaways to drive traffic and having enough traffic to do a giveaway.  I'm unclear where that line is.
