Title: A Thank You to the Forum
Post by: Doctor_Chill on March 13, 2014, 07:49:56 PM
No, this isn't some sappy goodbye, hello, or what have you. I just wanted to say how truly grateful I am at the amount of good cheer, respect, and leniency this community has, especially in the forum.

I've been a member of FF for almost two years. This was the first forum I ever joined, so when I heard that they were lax, unlike a lot of other forums, I shrugged it off as mere words. But over time, I've visited other forums, and found that this place is amazing.

We've been accused of having a "clique" at one point, but man, some other forums are so indifferent to new members, so impersonal and clique-ish. At least when newbies introduce themselves, we have the decency to address them by their names. Some places say "hi hi, glad to have you, k bye," to a big group of people. We throw in jokes, for crying out loud. And these discussions that can delve into a bit of heat? That's called being rude. That's mean. That's wrong. You point out a flaw, you're not following the rules.

And by God, if you don't adhere to the topic word for word, (heaven forbid you jump on a tangent) then all hell will break loose. It's maddening.

On top of that, places that receive 100+ members at one time are more cluttered than my garbage can. The forum is hard to navigate, there's no structure to things, and no "read unread posts since last visit" button. (Really, that's a godsend.)

Sometimes, I don't think I realize how great this place is.

Anyway, I just want to say I'm glad to have a place that's relaxing, that respects everyone's opinion, but doesn't go crazy saying an opinion is sacred. I'm glad that we revel in our love of the genre, that we allow new ideas to flourish and grow, and that we're lax, that we allow some insanity. Thank you, Fantasy-Faction. Thank you.

Thanks Chill. I have to agree with you that of all the various forums I've been, and I have frequented a few over the years, I find this the most welcoming and easy to get along with.

I have to say, it's been quite awhile since I've been on a forum, especially on a regular basis, but in the last week or two since I joined I've really enjoyed it here. Great people, great threads, great conversation :)

You put into words what i was thinking.

I love the random tangents,  sometimes they lead to somewhere very interesting, sometimes they're just strange!

Love it here, though my TBR curses you! :p

I'm a newcomer in the forums, although I've followed Fantasy-Faction's for some time now, and I must say that I can relate to most of what's been said. People take Fantasy seriously, here, but don't take themselves too seriously, and I think that is what's most enjoyable.

This forum is my favourite online find the in the last 12 months. I still remember my first introduction thread which received over two pages of recommendations and welcomes. It was great to be greeted so warmly and I love coming back here every day.

I wish to join the thanks to the forum's community. Not only have they helped me translate my novel, but also have given lots of useful insights about my writing. Besides, writing articles for them has been a real thrill :D

I haven't been participating a lot lately, but I still read a few topics every now and then. It's good to see that FF is still healthy :D

As a newcomer I am delighted to join in the thanks for a friendly, inclusive and incredibly interesting forum. I don't contribute as often as I should, because although I have read all kinds of SFF in the past, I tend to concentrate on the amazing new urban fantasy that just keeps coming, but I do read and enjoy many of the other threads and read the main articles daily. Thank you, Overlord, all moderators, admin and contributors for creating such a pleasure.  Thank you Chill for starting this with such a great tribute.

I suspect I am most ancient of members and as reader only, never a writer, the range and depth of imagination coming out in the fantasy world nowadays leaves me in complete awe and wonderment.  I wish I was teenage again with long, long years ahead to enjoy it all.   In this respect, something I find especially wonderful and unique to this Forum is the enthusiasm, care, help and encouragement given, in every way possible, to young writers starting out.  Fantasy Faction Writers section and the moderators who run it and all who contribute.  Nurture the talent, the world needs fantasy like never before and will continue to do so -  my greatest respects to you all.

Well life extension is getting better and better these days, and age reversing drugs have been made, though they're not the end all and be all. If you can last a decade or two my dear fellow, you'll be golden. And a question, how has fantasy evolved over the years in your eyes, and when was the "golden era" if you will.

Thank you so much for that great comment, Algon, exactly the kind of brilliant suggestion I should have expected from here - with renewed hope I will look  forward to  the necessary potions   ;D
The question is a great one and I will answer with my thoughts,  but you may have woken a sleeping dragon - how many chapters would you like?  Seriously, six decades of reading needs time and consideration before reply.

BTW Lady Ty.................

Couldn't have said it better myself.  It's odd, I've been a member of several forums in my time on the internet, which at this point is more than half my life, (Apologies to those I just made feel old,  :-\ ) and this forum is, not only one of the nicest, but also one of the few I actually make sure to check every day.  Even if I don't post, I always find it's nice to see what people have been saying.   Plus, I know who the people are.   Even some of the newer guys I recognize and the ones who've been around longer I look forward to seeing their comments and even hold some of their words in high esteem. (Which may not be the best thing to do with what is essentially a bunch of fantasy fans with too much time on their hands).

Oops... And yes, I would quite like to hear your thoughts. Heck, you could even do an article if you really wanted to, considering how open Overlord is to those sorts of thins.

That bolded bit encapsulates the whole thing. That made me laugh. There are a lot of places where something like that would make someone take offence, here I know it's meant as a gentle dig and it's funny.

Just came back to this thread myself, @Eclipse and l re-appreciated @Doctor_Chill ‘s opening post. Know he’s busy and has to study, law is very long and hard, but do miss him here.

I am still very much aware of the fact that apart from being excellent for reader discussion, this is the only book type forum I have found that consciously and deliberately nurtures and encourages new writers. Particularly young writers who need some empathy and confidence. The more mature writers here will understand why I say that and not feel left out, because they also benefit from the same. They often have the confidence from wide real life experience, but they also gain from being keptup to date learning the younger changing points of view.

The forum goes through a few peaks and troughs because real life is so darn intrusive, young enthusiasts find partners and get distracted, then raise families and find their time sifts away like the famous sand through the hourglass. Others need to concentrate on work or family or health so members drop away for a while and new ones join, so in this process the forum changes some of its focus to different directions. There have been difficult and distressing world events and they will continue to affect us all, but FF can be a ‘comfort’ place among friends for many and has proved so.

Not expressing myself very well, but basically saying, maybe time to remember about how unique and special this Forum is, to be sure that we keep it as welcoming and inclusive as ever, to stay a little bit crazy with side dressings of fun amongst serious talk and hope all members will try to drop by or return more when they have time.

Meanwhile, here’s to FFF which is well and truly alive and going to kick ass in 2018 and beyond ;D

WHO SAID I RESPECT YOUR OPINION?!?!  :o

 ;D

No but seriously, I hardly ever go and welcome new members. Too many never post again. It feels rote. I feel like I don't have time.

... sorry!

Easy to miss Intro threads as so many, but newbies  nearly alway get welcomed by answers and inclusion once they join in and chat on a thread.

Well, this is an impressive bit of necromancy.  :)

But yes. I greatly appreciate the existence of this forum. It is the most welcoming and mutually supporting place I have found on the internet. Which is sort of like finding that one good orc.

Which should be a story or book title: “One Good Orc”. Ready? Write!!!

I may not post as frequently these days but I’ve sung the praises of this place so frequently I find I repeat myself when I try.

I, too, appreciate this great forum still. No matter how infrequent I’m here, it still feels like home. I love that, I do.

I remember that when I was still un-registered lurker. I treated you guys and girls like really big authoritys. I felt small and unsignificant. I remember being nervous getting my first answers to a topic I made.

And now - you all still are. And althought I don't write much here (not being a native speaker makes it hard for me to express myself and sometimes I need a few hours to write what is on my mind - I am not kidding) because of university, family stuff and my rampaging addictions, I still like to jump here and read what is going on around here - good ol'Fantasy Faction.

Reaction from my inner Hannibal :

Trust me, most of us are just (friendly) opinionated people. Writing is part craft, part art, and not everyone follows the same rules or the same aesthetics. Some of our threads are literally just Fart concertos from everyone talking through their buttcrack because no one can even agree on where talent and skill begin, can be cultivated and what they even are (what a wicked topic that was!). We're just being friendly while we do it, but I don't think we're authorities on any of those topics.
Has any of us got a literature PhD by the way? I know an author who's doing one in Glasgow and I'm friend with a guy doing a thesis on Fantasy. He's a wicked fellow, I tried to get him to join. He told me some days ago that he wished he could still enjoy reading the way I do. That academic pursuit shapes the way you read and consider a text, and is not a good side effect in his eyes. Maybe staying a casual will do fine...

Plus, all the native speakers have no merit on writing fast, since they're native! So props to you for your regular, intelligent and well constructed comments in another language (I'll take it as well)!

It's good that shyness doesn't stop you. It really shouldn't.

@Nora - Answers like this are why I like this place so much. ;)
Also because people from here really do know their facts and their opinions are well backed. I mean - we all read. Most of us write. Some of us are even on the shelves! My first reaction to people attending this forum was:

"Dang it. There is so much knowledge! People are so wise! I must read everything!"

And so I could read stuff for 4-6 hours straight. I miss having so much free time.

And I'm not just being nice. I learned a lot from poeple here. Main site's articles and Writer's Corner were a godbless for an aspiring writer like me. I still admire in example: @Yora for his worldbuilding posts - even after 3 years of creating my own world.

@Lady Ty Haha! I definitely will. And I regret that for the last few months I have not even checked the forums. But we all have times like this. I hope I am justified ::)
