Next year - Themes for the anthology - Suggestions?
« on: June 23, 2012, 06:48:33 PM »
As most of you know - this year we are putting together an anthology. It is our first ever anthology and so we are bringing together stories from across the various genre. You will have some traditional, some epic, some urban, some new-weird and even some sci-fi / fantasy crossover type tales. There will also be articles linking each short story ranging on topics from Elves through to how to write believable first person narrative. We really see this a celebration of everything that fantasy-faction loves about the genre and I think for the first year - this will be perfect.

The current line up is:
6 Short Stories by Authors
6 Fantasy Writing Contest Winners
2 Guest Stories
Faction-Tale
12 Articles by Authors and Industry Professionals

So, next year, we want to do another anthology. Having thought a lot about how we can make this anthology even better - we've decided that we are going to attach a theme to the anthology. This will allow all the content to follow a set thread and means that readers and fans of our site will have something new and exciting to look forward to each year.

So yes, in summary, next year we are looking to run a theme for the anthology. The question is: What theme do we run with?

Well, as an action / dragon fanboy - I instantly thought 'Guns and Dragons' !!!!

But that's just me. I'm interested to hear if you guys have any ideas as to themes you'd like to see? :)

Why not have an anthology about writing?  It seems somewhat appropriate?

Magical inventions / artifacts could be a cool theme. Stories about legendary ancient swords and steampunkish mana batteries all in one neat little book.

I agree with Sunset. Guns and Dragons would be awesome. Sounds like something you'd see in a Roleplaying game.

I'll say it again. It would be awesome.  :)

Guns & Dragons, you've got me sold. An Alternate History type or outright fantasy (if Joe Abercrombie can have cannons why cant the rest of us) with armed dragon riders having dog fights (would they still be called dog fights?) or strafing soldiers on the ground with bullets & dragon fire.

To have an idea is not enough - no matter how good the idea is.

I'd vie for the magical artifact, high-magic option. I do love some magic.

Why not apocalypse themed, since we would have survived the mayan 2012 prophecy, and with this, the individual can have dragons and guns or artifacts.

I say no to this on principle. The Mayan prophecy made no sense at all. If they couldn't predict their own extinction, how could they have predicted the apocalypse? Though a future where a nuke went off or something and irradiated the country could be a good theme.
Oh, I have a blog. http://dullboredom.wordpress.com/

Actually, the Maya didn't prophesy an apocalypse at all, just a major astronomical alignment that marks the end of a long calendar cycle - like the Millennium, only more so.  The idea it's going to be an apocalypse is a modern one.

in an apocalypse theme, nature would be a huge aspect,  volcanoes errupting, earthquakes, monsters crawling out of the depths of hell to swollow up the  world, that is why i think  apocalypse, but guns and dragons is a good idea

Well, if this year's cover is guns and dragons, there should be another theme for next year. ;)
