And... British.
Well yes, it's a generalisation to say "American humour", and it relies on modern cultural context, but it's a description that I think many people would understand. These particular points (taken from wiki) are what I was getting at:

A strong theme of sarcasm and self-deprecation, often with deadpan delivery, runs throughout British humour.

American humor might also be distinguished by its most common type of humor, for example, more slapstick and physical comedy. There is less emphasis on understatement, and so the humor tends to be more open, rather than satirizing the social system through exaggeration.

A couple of examples: I find Hot Fuzz hilarious, but find Zoolander cringeworthy; they embody the difference to me (though to be fair most American humour doesn't quite hit the same lows as Zoolander)  ;)

We watched Jupiter Ascending today... wow that was bad. One of the worst films I've seen for a long time.

That was so bad it actually became funny at times.

I've tried to blank it from my memory, mostly succeeded at that now!  :P

We watched a few new scifi films recently - Chappie was hugely disappointing, Insurgent wasn't too bad, Tomorrowland was fairly mixed. Pretty sure there were more but I can't remember...  ???

I enjoyed Chappie :) Tomorrowland seemed unsure of who its audience was.  Mad Max? Come on!

I hated the "Mummy" character and her boyfriend, and there was just soooo much stuff that was handwaved away. I loved District 9 so I was hoping for something just as good, but it just didn't work for me. Didn't like the characters, didn't like the plot, didn't really like the setting much. Maybe I just had my expectations too high...  :-\

Yeah Tomorrowland was a bit weird at times, think you're right there.

Haven't even looked into Mad Max, no idea what it's even about...  :o

I'm going back and rewatching Heroes. I forgot how awesome this show was! Well, at least the first two and a half seasons anyway. I'm still on season 1, so I'm having doubts about my previous judgement. But I know I'll get to the second half and go, "Oh yeah. That's why."

The first season was pretty much perfect, such a shame that the writer's strike messed up everything after that. Plus I think it'd have been a lot better if they'd stuck to their original plan of focusing on new characters each season.

We're watching Jurassic Park, and we'll watch the sequels today or tomorrow. Going to see the new one on Friday!  ;D
