Started a game in Ireland last night (been playing there to get the hang of the mechanics).  Start goes well, I have decent stats, a relatively good (for the time and area) council, and I actually got my Bishop to like me so he's giving me troops and taxes.  I get married, pop out an heir fast, wife dies but find new wife quickly and she kept on popping out babies so I have some players going.

Within the first year I go and fabricate a claim on my weakest neighbor.  My Chancellor had decent diplomacy (iirc it was 12) and so I figured it would take a couple years but it should be a relatively quick fabrication.  It took 17 frustrating and annoying years for me to fabricate that claim.  My original person died of old age and my heir took over which was fine because he had even better attributes than his father and still I waited.  My first Chancellor died and I went and found someone with higher diplomacy and I still waited.

Finally the claim came through and I raised my levy and attacked.  I easily beat his levies and I start to lay siege and I was knocking down like 11% morale every 12 days so it was going down relatively quick.  Then the bastard cashed in all of his prestige (I'm not even sure how he had that much prestige to begin with) and raised the 2500 person tribal army which then whips my 500 something levy and then invades my county.  So now my army is retreating (not like they have a chance to stop this monster anyways) and I have a 2500 army now sieging me.  I don't quite have enough money to hire mercs (part of the problem with early Ireland is that I don't even have a city to get income for and have to rely on the bishop, in hindsight I should have just revoked his title early and took the penalty) and as a teenager I don't have enough prestige to get my own tribal army so I'm in a bad spot.  It was getting late so I stopped there but all of the sudden my random bloodline teenager in Greece is about to become more interesting.

Don't revoke the title from the bishop. I think you get more money and troops with him there than directly controlling the monastery. Same thing for cities. The only building worth keeping for rulers are castles. Or tribal holdings if you are Pagan.

If you inherited the title or conquered it, you can right click on the city/monastery portrait and some buttons will appear, there will be an option "Create new vassal".

To check other ruler's strength, you can click on the title of the county and/or their portrait see his screen. The prestige is a crown symbol.
Also, try playing with Intrigue. You can get land through marriages, either by luck (heirs and such dieing by disease, etc) or... assassinating until your dude becomes next in line. Though it's tough to assassinate early in Ireland, gold is super low and you're gonna have to bribe people most likely.

Sometimes I got land from matrillineal marriages, with primary or even secondary heirs dieing along the way. Depending on their opinion of you or your prestige, you can sometimes marry a second in line male heir. Sometimes a ruler only gets girls as heirs and you can marry one of your children (or brother's) to them and get the land a generation later. I remember one of my games when I started as a meager little county in the corner of the Holy Roman Empire... had a notebook with other ruler's kids written to plan my marriages.
You can also get claims that way, because the child will inherit a claim for the titles (or primary at least) of his father/mother. So you can try to plan some generations ahead and then press their claims to go to war.

You know, I wasn't sure where to put this, but it's so cool I wanted to share.

Elite: Dangerous has been out for two yeas now (you may have watched the planetary landing video I posted over in the HTC Vive thread). The game is a sequel to prior games that involved aliens (specifically, insectoid aliens called the Thargoids) but for over two years, there have been no aliens in Eilte: Dangerous itself. You might find artifacts or audio samples, but only humans (AI or real players).

That changed recently with what the devs have confirmed is one of the first "alien" encounter with the aliens who have been hiding in the depths of space since the game was released. On the developer side, what happened is the devs were holding this back for almost two years so they could sneak it in later in the game's lifecycle, but on the *player* side, it feels like two years of anticipation have finally been paid off.

Anyway, this video was captured by a player playing the game on XBox, and shows the encounter. It's ... actually really awesome.

For those who aren't familiar with the game, I'll explain some mechanics without spoilers.

There are three modes of travel: normal (realtime in space), supercruise (vastly time-dilated travel that lets you traverse solar systems quickly) and hyperspace (used to travel between systems). Of the three, previously, Supercruise is the only one you could be "pulled out of", either by pirates, cops, or bounty hunters.

You could never be pulled out of a hyperspace tunnel jump .... until now.

I saw that about Elite Dangerous.  I think it's cool that the devs let something simmer for so long to give a game life in it's middle/late ages.  However as a player I might have felt a little frustrated if I was in the game from the beginning and it's taken two years for a reveal.  As far as I know (and I could be wrong on this so correct me if I am) that so far there has been no interaction with the aliens so this is just a new cut scene basically but not really new content you can interact with.    This encounter would have been really cool in VR I bet.

We may need to get a CK2 thread going up at some point.

EA is giving away Mass Effect 2 on Origin. (It's the current "On the house" freebie.)

Re: CK2
My ruler had the chaste trait (-15% fertility) and his wife was homosexual (-15% fertility). Of course they had 6 sons. And this was with tribal rule (gavelkind succession) so all the land was divided equally to the sons when the ruler died.
*sighs*
(Luckily the old ruler was a king so most of the brothers of the new ruler stayed in the kingdom as vassals. But vassals aren't that useful when playing with tribal leader.)

Everything I wrote above is pure conjecture. I don't know what I'm talking about.

I started playing Darkest Dungeon this week.

And man... This game is damn hard. I played over 12 hours now and don't feel like I made much progress.

I started playing Arkham Knight recently. A nice filler game, but pretty standard and boring plot-wise.

Also spent a good many hours playing civ VI, though it runs really slow on my PC :(

Breaking news from CK2: I managed to survive the invasion by marrying off all my sisters to whoever would prove to be able to bring me troops.

This was last week I think but I had to take screenshots of some bizarre events.

I started rebuilding and got children... and all 3 of them, each from a different wife, were not mine and everyone in the Empire knew it. BUT... they had the Genius trait. So I simply looked the other way  ::) They even churned some other kids with good traits.

BUT... I should have plotted to imprison or kill those unfaithful wives or something, because I kept banging them and eventually got syphilis. Which eventually made me go mad to the point I appointed my horse as Grand Vizier.

Spoiler for Hiden:

Spoiler for Hiden:

To make matters worse, he wasn't just a horse, he was an imbecile horse.

Spoiler for Hiden:

And my lunacy kept getting worse:

Spoiler for Hiden:

It took long 6 years for me to die. And before that I executed all 3 cheating wives and kept the faithful one alive.

Terrible idea. She poisoned the supper of the immediate heir and the next (both with the Genius trait) so her own son, an ordinary boy, could be Caliph.

Decades of careful endurance, planning and breeding all for nothing  ::)

Hahaha that's awesome.

My save is about to get interesting.  I'm playing in Ireland and I currently hold 5 of the middle counties and I'm up to Petty King.  There is a 4 county Petty King to the north and the remaining 4 counties at the south are still independent.  My character is now in his low 40s so beginning to worry about his time running out and it's taking forever to fabricate claims.  I'm hoping to get two more counties before he dies off so I can make the whole of Ireland a kingdom, if he dies before that it's going to be an issue as I have a lot of sons (I have 8 acknowledged kids and 2 bastards, my guy was busy) and I'm going to lose some titles if I can't consolidate in time.  I am actually 4th in line for the petty kingdom to the north but I do not have enough money to off everyone ahead of me.

The annoying thing is my second son has a lot of good attributes and desirable traits so I wish he was the heir but my current heir is lacking in a lot of things.  I'm going to start putting him as a commander and see if he can't bite the dust.  Elsewhere my bloodline is doing pretty well so if something bad did happen in Ireland I have a lot of places I can put up the pieces in.

Oh, on claims for war. If you are going for a county and that count has a liege, you have to declare war against that liege.

So that means, if you are going for the county of York, you can't declare war on the count of York, you have to go to the portrait of his liege and say, declare war on the duke of York or even the king of England for the option to appear.

It could be that you may actually not need all those fabricated claims (specially if you are tribal, I think there are tons of casus belli for war, at least when I played as a Russian tribal).

I think you can imprison and throw a son in the Oubliette. I'm playing a historical mod and it allows you to plot to kill your children. Once there was an Assassination button that didn't require plot power, but they removed it because someone went so crazy with it and against their children that they managed to hold the entire world in like 15 years  :o
With some recent patches they allowed you to activate that option again in the game ruleset before you begin.

Became King of Ireland last night but now I'm up against my demesne limit and still looking at losing titles on succession.   Apparently giving my sons counties really upsets my council and bishoprics and I can't really figure out how to consolidate everything so I can get more territory and pass it down effectively when I die.  I'm trying to work my way to get to feudalism but still have some work to do there.

Omg... and I still need to get Revelations and the DLCs. And I'm surprised, it's gonna be released around May while it usually takes a year.

And a remake of Gaiden... that's FE2, I think the only one I actually didn't play.

More here: https://serenesforest.net/2017/01/18/fire-emblem-echoes-trailer-info-analysis/

Hopefully they will let the children mechanic rest in peace now and add something new. Thought I don't mind the marriage mechanic and it giving those huge bonuses. Probably the only game I don't mind massive shipping.

Now I need to get a bigger SD card...

Any PS4 gamers out there?

I'm looking for a solid PS4 RPG title, and just simply can't find anything to spend my hard earned money on. I mean, the new Final Fantasy looks alright, but I would absolutely love an MMO if there's anything of quality out there for PS4.

I've also played the hell out of Witcher, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Fallout 4 and Skyrim.

Any suggestions beyond those? I'm getting a little sick of headshot after headshot in Battlefield 1 here, and could use a new distraction.. ::)
